So for my homebrew world there are 13 primary races that have evolved/diverged over millenia. I'm looking to find what people would be most interested in seeing and/or playing. Many of these races will be homebrew, but some of them already exist. Please feel free to offer new suggestions in the comments section. Note that preexisting races history/lore will be modified for my world and temperament of creatures isn't necessarily the same. I.e. Gnolls are just sentient bipedal hyena persons that are not inherently evil. Thank you for your input in advance!
I'd probably pick a mouse/rat folk type character. I have a soft spot for Mouse Guard.
Mechanics wise I haven't really seen a anthropomorphic race I liked over much. The tortle possibly being the better of the batch. You might consider just reskinning some of the PHB races. For example, mousefolk could be based off of gnomes. Forest mice would be more magical and close to nature while tinker mice would be more interested in creating gadgets. Maybe replace Gnome Cunning with a climb speed and away you go.
Some of them will be loosely based off of other official races either a single one or hybrids. Others are going to be completely original. So far I have laid the groundwork for the monkey (Vanara) and gorilla (Gorreri) races, being loosely based off of halfling and bugbear, respectively. I will probably make a fish/shark people, and possibly a whale/dolphin race, the latter of the two being able to breathe air, will be naturally more likely to see play, though I may just make all water breathing races be able to breathe air as well so they can be playable in something other that an oceanic campaign. Races will probably all be restricted to small and medium sizes, though some of the medium races will have the Powerful Build feature to reflect their natural strength or massive size, (Gorreri have it and a whale based race would as well). The races that Slaine000 mentioned, Mousefolk/Ratfolk have already been seen as NPCs in this world and were small and medium respectively. Leonin (a strength based variant of Tabaxi), Minotaur, and Tortle have already been established races, and some have been played in a mini campaign I ran. That campaign is not necessarily canon however, and the Races of the world are subject to change. The only race that is guaranteed in the world is Minotaur, as they have a civilization that I have already built. Primates will likely be in it as well simply because so many races already exist that would fit into that category, that... and some people just want to be Humans.

I honestly hadn't thought of reskinning the original races and that is an awesome idea for mousefolk, it fits perfectly. Props.

I know that 3.5 (specifically Savage Species) had a template for making anthros from various animals. Does 5e have something similair?
Not that I'm aware of. I've kind of developed my own method though and I have like 30-35 races now
