Running Dragon Heist and my players wanted to open a speakeasy in a newly renovated hidden area of Trollskull Tavern. They are running the main tavern as well, but they wanted to have a secret speakeasy as well. Here is a little table I made for them, greater risk/greater reward, they're enjoying it so far, will probably need to make some tweaks, would love to hear feedback. Has anyone else run anything like this?
Speakeasy- will roll separate d100+ days+ GP spent (DM roll 50/50 if GP spent is negative or positive ie too much information has gotten out and City Watch has been alerted to the illegal business)
01-20= Must pay expenses, City Watch shows up and takes 100GP and shuts entire tavern down for 1d12 days
21-30= Must pay expenses, City Watch shows up and shuts entire tavern down for 1d12 days
I like it. I'd also think about the other benefits and negatives from an illegal operation. Either a separate table, or you could break your current table down more. But having shady folks coming in would leave open the possibility of your players making enemies (your bouncer just threw a notorious crime boss out on the street), or making contacts (your bouncer stopped someone from killing that crime boss, he now owes you one). Or overhearing rumors and tips, making contacts in the City Watch (who are the shady watch members who are taking payoffs? Will it help you later to make friends with them now?)
In the original table, I'd also include the chance for the Watch to show up, take some money, but leave them open. In fact...that's more likely, right? If there are crooked Watch members extorting you, they want you to stay in business so they can keep extorting you.
Thanks, yeah it was a quick concept they haven't gotten enough money to open their speakeasy yet, but I've been playing around with different ways to tweak the table. I like the idea of adding sub tables. One of the PCs really wants to have high end shady people in the tavern to get information and sell secrets.
I'm thinking of increasing the standard expense for the speakeasy to include an amount for paying off the City Watch, as things progress in the story I'll post updates/changes.
Yeah, we will see one of the PC's is from one of the noble families of Waterdeep and he has an alternate life as a thief/spy so I'm excited to see how they use that to potentially get themselves in or out of trouble haha.

Looking for new subclasses, spells, magic items, feats, and races? Opinions welcome :)

Yeah, I'd love to hear how it works out.
I'd think there would have to be a turf war? I mean...they are moving in on someone's business, right? :)
