So I saw the Avariel in the UA content. And I've searched a little here and therefore it, but what I've seen is a pretty boring and not that interesting subrace. So I wanted to try myself, now of course this is my opinion while the others are someone else's and that fine. ^^
Ability Scores: +1 charisma. Winged: You have a pair of beautiful white feathery wings on your back. You have a flying speed equal to your movement speed. Avariel Proficiencies: You are proficient with Spears, Pikes, Shortbows, and Longbows. Extra Language: You can speak, read, and write Primordial.
(I added primordial because the single dialect thingy is kinda meh. You can change that if you want but, Primordial is one of my favorite languages and only learning one of it's dialects makes it about 95% useless IMHO. Most pictures of avariel have been with spears. So I added pikes as I like the idea of that aswell. You can add javelins if you want but I haven't seen a race that gives 5 weapon proficiencies. Bows because of their wings. It would be pretty weird to have a lot of mobility with those and then not having the ability to shot a bow? So, that's why. I was thinking of removing the shortbow and adding a quarterstaff or a javelin but it felt more right to have both versions of the bow.)
Knowing one dialect of Primordial lets you understand all dialects. At worst, it's like the difference between a mole from Redwall (exaggerated West Country accent) and someone from, say, Louisiana.

I'm not sure what you mean by that but sure! I thought that primordial was built up of all 4 elemental languages. Oh well.
This is great! Is this something that you could share as a Homebrew race?
I'm glad you like it! I will see to it once I get home. At the moment I'm not at the best moment to do that but I will see if I can't throw it out there! I'm really glad u like it! ^^
ik this is an old thread, but yes, primordial is composed of 4 dialects that are portrayed as different languages.
for example, my water genasi can speak aquan. Therefore, I can understand fire elementals when they speak, but if I speak to them, I would have an aquan dialect, likely offending them.
it’s unclear if Tongues would prevent this or not, because they can already *understand* you, just not in the way you want them to. As a DM, I would rule that tongues lets you pick which language you sound like when speaking to a polylingual.
It’s interesting because primordial is one of the only non-human forms of dialect in dnd. Whenever I have a player learn primordial, I ask them which dialect they studied when learning, because that will affect RP encounters.
