I'm working on creating a "Dragoon" Template to add to npcs/pc's in my homebrew world, however I need some help from folks with a far better grasp on balance/mechanics than I! Fluff wise, the origin of the power is that the npc/pc takes the soul of a dragon and absorbs it into their own. If the process is successful the souls merge and the original owner gains powers based on the type of Dragon Soul. I took original inspiration from the Legend of Dragoon, in that I envisioned a brief transformation, improved martial ability or magic ability, and a few key abilities that it grants for a short time. Rather than tie it to so many transformations per long rest, I thought about utilizing hitdice, making the characters spend hit dice to activate abilities, potentially leaving them with less to spend during a short rest, a bit of resource management if you will. What i'm stuck on are the specific mechanics.
For the initial check to see whether the process is successful or not, i'm figuring a percentile roll with a small chance of success that can be increased by certain actions of the characters. Not sure what actions though.
As for the abilities themselves, since I don't want to take away from class levels or plans of the PC's i decided to effectively make this a magic item, that permanently takes up an attunement slot. The earliest I think i would allow this to be gained is level 11ish...
My struggle now is, what to grant for the abilities/powers, since i don't want to overlap too much with the Dragonborn racial traits, or the Draconic bloodline sorcerer, but logically there would be some since the origin creature for all of those is a Dragon. I was thinking the base transformation into a Dragoon once hit-dice are spent (unsure of how many yet, but 6 is standing out in my head) would cast some form of the spell Tenser's transformation on the character, however they would still be able to cast spells, and the initial transformation would not be able to be countered by counterspell/dispell magic, though any abilities thereafter would be subject to those spells.
So Dndbeyond collective, I am pleading for aid! If you've made it this far through my ramblings, I thank you, and I am grateful for any advice offered.
This is a very cool idea, and I would love to incorporate LoD lore in my upcoming Tyranny of Dragons campaign. It's my first time behind the screen, so I don't know how to make it balanced, but my initial thought was a magic item requiring attunement, giving more powers and abilities in exchange for taking up more attunement slots, something similar to the Hammer of Thunderbolts.
