I am new here and I have just started to get into D&D. I haven't even completed a campaign yet so making my own race probability isn't the best idea. (Since I am unfamiliar with most of the basic parts of the game).
Probably since I don't have a subscription, I don't have the option to choose my home browed race for my characters. So I can't double check in the character creation area if I entered in all the modifiers and options in correctly. Plus I sometimes forget to save.
I don't want my race to be over powered, so it would be super helpful if I can get some guidance on what would be considered balanced.
Plus there is the fact that a lot of insects basically have super powers. Ants can lift 5,000X their own body weight before their joints rip apart. If you want to read about that here is the source. Luckily since D&D has magic I can just scale that up to human size without worrying about the issues that prevent us from having monster insects around today.
Obviously, if I want to give my race (Insectoidea) some of those insect super powers I need to balance it out with some weaknesses. For one, the Insectoidea will be vulnerable to cold / ice.
As for other vulnerabilities... well moths are weak to lamps. Source's of bright light (in an otherwise dark area) would impair a Moth Insectoidea. Admittedly, becoming mesmerized by light is a silly weakness. Becoming distracted and essentially hypnotized by the light? But being susceptible to being (essentially) charmed by light would severely hamper a player's ability to take advantage of their moth powered sense of smell. (A male of any of the giant silk moth species can sense a female from 7 miles away...)
So I am making a race of humanoid insects...
