Ok, so I've decided to make a Minecraft map that you can play a DND campaign in. It will take a long time, and people have to use their imagination a little bit with some things, but here's the thing. I was going to have it so it would be set in the Minecraft world, with a lot of DND aspects.
A lot of the monsters are still in this world, the races, and spells. The thing is, enchantments have been replaced with ones from Minecraft, the Minecraft monsters will actually be fight-able throughout the campaign, and items such as elytra will be in it.
This may sound like a ridiculous idea, but I don't plan on giving up. It makes doing battle maps pretty easy, and there's villagers with trades set up, so less work for the DM, and some things are left vague so people can change a lot of elements within the world.
The biggest reason I made this thread was to get ideas from other people about what can happen. I need other ideas, as for mobs to fight, lore to maybe put in, etc. I can make this stuff pretty well, playing a lot of Minecraft and DND, but not very fast.
As a map, I don't see any problem. It also allows you to visually show vertical portions of the map. The potential problems I see are: How are you going to do combat? If your just having combat be as it is in Minecraft then what makes D&D? Wouldn't it just be an Adventure Mode Minecraft game with someone spawning monsters, items, and voicing some things? If it was me, I'd keep it in creative mode and simply use the Minecraft as the map.

I actually have a solution to that. He can spawn mobs with no AI and teleport them when they move.
For that matter a series of command blocks could keep players from leaving their spaces too without permission.
Can use custom data packs to reskin mobs, and scoreboard to track damage and initiative (getting advanced at this point, I never figured out scoreboards myself).

Well I was just going to have it be blocks holding the spaces for the enemies, and the combat is normal DND. It's a lot more simple than no AI mobs, and they can easily represent their sized on battle maps that way. The world will be in adventure mode, and be more leaning on Minecraft lore than DND lore, and more DND mechanics than Minecraft mechanics, but still have elements from both games in those parts of it.
I'm also not greaaat at command blocks, but have some in use in the map so far.
So I wanted to show people whats happened so far. It might not be so good, I've been working for a week so far, but definitely not spending most of my time doing this.
Go for it! I don't see why this wouldn't work. People use all sorts of online spaces for roleplaying and gaming.
Check out the basics or maybe a guide on DMing a Neverwinter Nights private server. That game was essentially made from the ground up to be small scale online multiplayer DND, I'm sure there's stuff to learn that you can implement.
Well, it's been real slow. Haven't made much progress because of other work, but during school and stuff I'm still thinking of things to do and put in.
I've also done some DM's guild stuff to, for other reasons.
well first thing of note is that the two systems are very diffrent and as such you should take careful measures depending on how faithful you wish to be to the source material. For instance an player avatar in minecraft will not get stronger, they wil get better armor and such but they will never per se be stronger than thy where at the start. You need to be mindful of how faithful you wanna be to the source, for instance will shields work diffrently? will you lock hit point progression? will any player regardless of proficiencies be able to use crafting benches and brewing stands and other crafting stations? how much will they be able to manipulate the world, will they be able to break and place blocks? Will the world even be blocky in universe? Are you going to need special proficencies to dig and craft? how will spellcasters act into this?
i am shure you can make it work, just make shure you have an clear answer to each of these questions and be mindful of how gameplay changes may affect CR and challenge rating
edit: oh wait i thought you meant like minecraft as an campaign setting, well a thing i will reccomend strongly it to **** about a LOT with commands, you can make it so that every player wears special boots that reduce their speed to zero and then give them books, so they are forced to move more slowly, use scoreboards to keep track of movement (if you feel like doing so) and so much more, i reccomend mcstacker for custom command creations. Also /execute commands are an real asset, as long as you make sure not to get intimidated by them.
Make sure any mobs you spawn have their speed set to 0 and that you move them about using only teleport commands in 1 block increments.
also this can be used to make interaction and exploration segments of the game feel far more alive and interesting
also you can use commands to more accurately keep track of spell ranges, for instance run this command
give @p written_book{display:{Name:'{"text":"spellbook"}'},title:"",author:"",pages:['{"text":"magic missile","color":"blue","bold":false,"italic":true,"underlined":true,"clickEvent":{"action":"run_command","value":"/effect give @e[distance=..24] minecraft:glowing 3"}}']} 1
you will give an player an book where if they click on the highlighted magic missiletext an command will run that gives the glowing effect to all creatures within 24 blocks, so if use treat 1 block as an 5-foot increment that means that 120 ft should be 24 blocks, thus clicking on that text will highlight all possible valid targets within range

I wasn't planning on making it that fancy. It was mostly going to be a visual of the world with battle maps that have the elevations. There's some magic items in different places, and stuff inside of places that the players could decide to loot inside of the world.
The idea was mainly to make either visuals easier for DM's, let minecraft/DND fans have fun, and make online visuals decent.
If D&D and Minecraft could collaborate to create a D&D specific version of Minecraft I believe it would be a phenomenon. Having the ability to create custom virtual interactive maps would be insanely awsome. I imagine the DM would purchase a server slot and would be the one who invited players to join. The Minecraft market place could sell campaign settings, monster packs, classes and skins, all sorts of things. If those two companies actually worked together on a project like this the potential would be as infinite as D&D itself. It would allow players to play D&D on their phones/tablets/PC’s, etc from anywhere anytime. I don’t think it would ever replace tabletop gaming but it would be a platform that could introduce D&D to a new generation on a unimaginable level. I think the OP’s idea is brilliant.

interesting viewpoint but i think that while minecraft has plenty of interesting lore and monsters a minecraft campaign setting could explore, but i do not think an minecraft/dnd crossover could work since the two intelectual properties are rather diffrent. The appeal behind minecraft is how the world can easily be molded into an specific shape, the world is your playground, but the worlds themselves, while full of limited ambient worldbuilding in the form of the terrain generation algorithims has no specific named locations, that could of course be circumvented but the thing about minecraft is creativity in how you shape the world, wheras dnd is all about creativity in the characters that inhabit those worlds.
The closest minecraft will ever come to the worlds of dnd is probably minecraft dungeons, yet that game is focused on more item based progression wheras dnd is focused on more skill based progression, in becoming stronger by means of gaining more experience and more hit points

My concern is that the players would choose to tunnel past the threat. Maybe you have rules against that, but that is my first worry. I tunnel past all threats when I can in Minecraft.

If in adventure mode you cant tunnel However, I see your point and that was smart to point out.
technically you can use commands to give them pickaxes and other tools who can break certain blocks but not others, for instance give them an pickaxe that can only break cobblestone and then make like "breakable walls" in the map like so /give @p minecraft:iron_pickaxe{CanDestroy:["minecraft:cobblestone"],Unbreakable:1b} 1 and doing so would athorize players in adventure mode to break those specific allowed blocks

Here, have some homebrew classes! Subclasses to? Why not races. Feats, feats as well. I have a lot of magic items. Lastly I got monsters, fun, fun times.
This could be a lot of fun!

I'd like it if anyone had feedback or ideas. Ideas centralized around Minecraft lore and DND mechanics preferably. Thanks in advance.

Great. Try to refer to some mods on the internet, like techbigs site,... Those can give you some ideas.

yes as an means to never use minis again it is perfect, however you can also use commands to meassure distance easily with commands

So, the buildings are honestly not the best I have seen but, I do love the idea.
P.S. You might want to try using WorldPainter to make the rest of the area be not just flat.
P.P.S. I think I will also try making a map like that.
P.P.P.S. I don't think its even 1 percent crazy.
