Is this the best place to put this? This would be my second post to this forum and I just want to make sure that homebrewed magic items belong in this forum and not another.
That being said, I was thinking of a magic evil item that wasn't necessarily sentient and evil, just... I want someone to look at it and say "Oh, that's a weapon that bad guys would use. Good guys just don't do that."
I came up with a Binding Greatsword, though the greatsword isn't really the point. The effect is: on a 19-20, rusty spiked chain erupts from the ground, restraining the victim. If the victim remains restrained for 2 rounds, an iron spiked collar latches itself to the victim's neck and the victim acts as if under a Dominate Person spell.
I'm having trouble with the whole "When does Dominate Person" come in. It could be a once a day thing, or it could be a charge-based thing.
Also, is there better wording for "On a 19-20"? What I'm trying to convey is on a Natural 19-20 this effect happens.
If anyone could suggest a more evil or a differently evil effect, I would really appreciate it. Also any feedback would be awesome. Thank you.
That sounds pretty evil to me. I think the only thing you need to do to make something "evil" is to sell it that way while roleplaying.
For mechanics, I would say this:
If you attack a creature with this weapon and roll a 19 or 20 on the attack roll, the creature must succeed on a DC XX Dexterity saving throw or be restrained for 1 minute. A target restrained by the sword can use an action to make a DC XX Strength or Dexterity check (target’s choice). On a success, the creature is no longer restrained by the sword.
As an action, you can cast the dominate person spell (save DC XX) from the sword on a target restrained by the sword. Once this property is used, it can’t be used again until the next dawn.

Perfect. Thanks a ton.
