I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this, and if it isn't I'm sorry. So with that said, I've been tossing around an idea in my head and on paper for a number of years now and have never really be able to flesh it out into anything usable perhaps due to my lack of experience or whatever. The idea was originally a oneshot inspired by the song "Home By The Sea" by Genesis, after asking for some thoughts on the general idea elsewhere I have decided to try making it into a full campaign instead. What I have so far:
Synopsis:
- The party enters a cursed manor through some motivation (hired to do so, looking for stuff to steal, pure curiosity, whatever), once within the manor they find they are unable to escape and encounter these featureless spirits, shadows with no substance in the shape of men. The exception being a few spirits that have retained their features and simply ask that the party sit down and let them relive their live in what they tell them. If the party listens to their stories they find themselves not only hearing but seeing and experiencing their memories. It is within these memories that clues to the cause of the curse and perhaps an answer to releasing it lies.
An abandoned manor stands at the edge of a cliff overlooking a vast sea, the surrounding grounds overgrown, vines growing up the sides of the manor. The manor once belonged to a retired adventurer turned lich is now seemingly cursed. Once within the walls of the manor none may leave, even death cannot provide an escape as the souls of those trapped within the manor become trapped in a never ending existence. The souls of the trapped slowly fade and lose all semblances of who they once were, existing as nothing more than empty shadows in the form of what they once were. The only exception being a group of spirits belonging to the ones that once adventured with and called themselves friends to the owner of the manor having been trapped since the conception of this curse, these spirits having long given up on being released wish only to relive their past in the stories they tell to those that find themselves trapped before they pass and become just another spirit destined to fade into an empty existence.
As time has passed the story of who owned the manor and the curse it holds has become no more than a bedtime story told to children, warning them to never go near the abandoned manor. It is at in this time that a new party of adventurers finds reason to enter the manor and become the next victims of the curse or perhaps they will be the ones that break the curse and free the spirits, using clues and knowledge in the original spirit’s tales to find the one responsible.
When people sit and listen to the spirit’s stories they find themselves seemingly brought into the memories of the spirits reliving their tales and the things that made up their life.
My thought each of the spirits memories or stories would be able to span multiple sessions before finally culminating in the party attempting to release the curse or become just another trapped soul.
So this is all I have so far, please give me your thoughts as I try to grow this into something I can try running for my friends and finally see my desire to build a story off of a great song.
Thank you.
