I just created a hombreward item called Potion of Barbarian's Rage, the jist of the item is this: If a none barbarian uses this item they are able to temporarily use the base Rage ability.
But if a barbarian uses they can roll a d6 to use the starting rage ability from the Ancestral Guardian, Battlerager, Beserker, Storm Herald, Totem Warrior, or zealot subclasses. If they already are that subclass, they get to reroll, and swap out their rage ability for a minute, until they use rage again, or fall unconscious.
You could give the Barbarian the ability to land critical hits for X number of attacks each round for X number of rounds possibly. After the potion wears off they could suffer X number of levels of exhaustion for using it.
(X being numbers you choose, not the player, and that you think would make it balanced for the barbarian).
I was thinking about that initially for the barbarian, I was wanting a bit of unpredictability for the barbarian. I might add the exhaustion though. Does 2 levels exhaustion work for none barbarians, and 1 for barbarians?
I guess it depends on how punishing your campaign is, here’s the description of exhaustion from p. 107 of the basic handbook:
“Some special abilities and environmental hazards, such as starvation and the long-term effects of freezing or scorching temperatures, can lead to a special condition called exhaustion. Exhaustion is measured in six levels. An effect can give a creature one or more levels of exhaustion, as specified in the effect’s description.
Level Effect
1 Disadvantage on ability checks 2 Speed halved 3 Disadvantage on attack rolls and saving throws 4 Hit point maximum halved 5 Speed reduced to 0 6 Death”
So keep those effects in mind. Also pay special attention the the berserker barbarian that suffers levels of exhaustion for using its frenzy attack (maybe you’d want to make it purposefully bad for this subclass but that’s ultimately up to you).

Yeah that would be a good. Well why barbarian takes one, because they know how to use their rage, and their body wouldn't take as much punishment.
