So, basically, I am working on this Homebrew Race called 'Vorax'. They kinda look like Tahm Kench from League of Legends. Because that's the inspiration, I scrolled through the Champions List and tried to come up with ways to create them in DnD and I kinda got stuck on Kench. The basic idea of Vorax is that they can swallow small or tiny foes by grabbing them with their tongue and, well, pulling them down the hatch, much like many amphibians to. Once inside their belly, they take Acid Damage, each turn, and, lest they manage to struggle free, will ultimately be digested.
I kinda struggle with some things:
- The way I initially wrote it out, the feature requires to grapple the foe first, using the tongue, as an action, then, if the foe is smaller than Medium, swallowing them as a bonus action. They would take acid damage on each of the Vorax' turns, on their own turn they could try to free themselves with an Athletics or Acrobatics check. The Vorax could release them as a bonus action. If the foe dies from the acid, they dissolve, leaving behind nothing but magical items they had on them. The Vorax can't swallow multiple foes at once, nor can he grapple another enemy with his tongue while already digesting one. However, the sheer verbosity of this skill on paper makes me think it's overcomplicated and impractical, so I am looking for a way to simplify the abillity.
- I am also unsure about the DC of the saving throw of an enemy trying to resist the tongue-grapple or free themselves from the belly of the... well... adventurer. Logically, a Vorax with a high strength modifier would not necessarily have a stronger tongue, since that is not the muscle barbarians or fighters would usually focus their work-out on (I think), so should the DC be the same, regardless of the characters individual stats? And if so, how high should the DC be to not be an overpowered Goblin-ender but also give the player a fair chance to digest a Goblin, once in a while (because who would not want to do that)?
- Speaking numbers, I am also not sure how high the acid damage should be. Giant Toads cause 3d6, but that sounds like a gamebreaker, especially at early levels and especially considering that I don't think the abillity should require a rest to regain, since it describes the Vorax' natural modus of eating things? My initial concept pitch for the race says 2d4, but I am uncertain how that abillity holds up at higher levels. But then, it's not designed to eat the BBEG, but to thin out their army of annoying minions, so that would probably be fine.
- On a side note, I was also considering giving the Vorax immunity to acid and poison, but I think I should downgrade at least the acid one to resistance. What do you think?
