I mainly kept quiet as I can be, keeping myself jacked into my deck. Goggles on, I poured over the data they had, playing the footage of the men who were cutting down the artificial forest over and over, running it through some software to get some information. As expected from Corpos, their work is shoddy at best. Barely got anything worth passible to assist the search protocol for the drones. Also, they seem to be willfully ignorant and under the impression that bigger is better. Two large drones? In a forest? They don’t understand the first thing when it comes to security. It almost makes me want to say they have it coming. But a job is a job and I was hired to do it. So here I am, in an air transport, within a car, surrounded by an expendable crew for a corp that practically is screaming “ROB ME”.
Pulling out of my deck, I find myself in the middle of a conversation between Dorango and Reaper. It was strange seeing her be a little open with a stranger. It’s not like we knew each other, but from what I gathered of her in terms of a person, it wasn’t a sight that I thought I would see. Still, team cohesion is important all the same, so whatever was done to stay alive was better than nothing.
Olivia listened to the music with a soft smile, and relaxed, trying to get her mind off of her current patient back in Night City.
Jenna had come into the Trauma Ward with broken bones, lacerations, and massive head trauma with brain swelling. According to the police report, her and a friend had been run over by a car, but Jenna smashed into the front of the car's windshield, head first, before she hit the ground. She received the call from Misha, and Olivia was there within minutes. The next day was filled with frantic treatment, and emergency operations. Luckily, so far, she pulled through.
She looked outside and saw that they would be arriving shortly. A large patch of actual real forest was starting to come into view.
Before us loomed a mighty, vast forest. It was impressive, and beautiful at the same time. We were dropped off at a large landing pad right before the entrance to the forest proper, where a suit was waiting for us outside in front of some sort of large wooden cabin. He walked out to greet us as we landed. A large sign displayed the Biotechnica logo nearby, but not much else.
We exited the jet powered cargo transport and pilot crew began unloading Beastie. Olivia grabbed her medical crate backpack and exited. The air was cool, and crisp, like a beautiful fall day. The suit approached us.
"Welcome to Reference RF003. The forest is of great value to us, and the company. As you can see, most likely on your way here, most of the state is a barren wasteland thanks to the Fourth Corporate War. We will be the ones to usher in a great new era, rebuilding and restarting the lumber area that millions and millions will benefit from. The trees are mostly mahogany and oak, recreated through genetic splicing. Truly an incredible feat, even for this day and age."
"Before you is the access road into RF003. Take it, and you'll see a large Ranger Station nearby. I'll upload you all a map with it's location. In order to access the Ranger Station, you're going to need a code. Here it is."He uploads you the code, IO. "Once inside, it's nothing pretty, but this job isn't luxurious. There's two drones for you guys to use as your eyes in the sky. Here are the code for them as well." He uploads you the codes, IO. "There's a decent supply of food at the station along with hammocks. We'll pick you up here, at this cabin, in two days. Any questions?"
You start at the blue X and must take Beastie to the station marked above. Once you are ready to shove off, i'll progress again.
Olivia looked around, slinging her backpack around her right shoulder. "Wow. It's gorgeous out here. I can't believe Biotechnica did all this."
Nearby, Beastie would be the only thing other than a hell of a long hike to get to the RF003 Ranger Station on the top of the map. "Why would poachers want to destroy this forest? It doesn't make sense."
"It's all about the eddies." Reaper sighs, answering Olivia's question as she grabs her duffel and Zero.
"Wow, this is pretty amazing." she says with awe in her voice as she steps out of the transport. Umeko, you would have loved this. She thinks to herself as she takes in the scenery.
"It's all about the eddies." Reaper sighs, answering Olivia's question as she grabs her duffel and Zero. "I suppose so, huh."Olivia agreed. "It's just so serene and different. I've lived in Night City all my life, and with the Military before that. It's..so quiet."
Qrow lets out a low whistle as he looks about the vast trees. Unlike the others, he takes a moment to feel the ground as well, removing his mask to taste the air for moisture. It was cooler, something he expected for coming more north, but the cleanness of the air, as well as the spring of life that came with it compared to the dry wastes and city....it was a surprising development that he enjoyed. Grinning, he heard the suit mention questions and simply took a look at the map on his agent to check the route. His brow would furrow for a moment before he stood up and called over, "Hey, I get that the one up here is our ranger station or whatever, but what about the rest of these buildings? Anything or anyone we should expect to bump into while we're out here?"
"It smells different here." Reaper says as she sniffs the air. "And there's no noise...except that." She says flatly after hearing a small branch snap under her feet as she moved around. How the hell am I supposed to move quietly in a place like this?No cover noise, shit cracking under my feet. She starts making a conscience effort to walk without making noise, watching her steps.
It was good to have the information that the suit provided. The map is a good start as it gave me a sense of scale and a sense of direction. The drone codes were especially useful as they were our eyes and ears. But one question did loom in my mind. A facility like this, especially in light of recent events would have probably installed some more failsafe protocols. “I do have a question. Once spotted, is there anything I can do with the facility to aid in our capture of the raiders? Lockdown? Alarm? Call for reinforcements? What is it that can be done to increase our odds of success?” I’m not expecting much, but I am expecting something.
I turn to the group and ask them. “And are any of us going on patrol or are we hunkering down and expecting the drones to do all the work?”
Reaper scans the vicinity looking for the types of areas that could provide hiding spots, recon points and offense/defense options. Hopefully there would be something she could work with when they got to the ranger station. She pulls up Zero and sites through the scope to see how the trees might effect her shots. "I might have to go with drones on this one. I can do recon in the city, but this is a whole different setup."
She lowers Zero and heads over to Beastie "The sooner we get there the more time we have to scout the area and see if there is a good spot for tagging these gonks." She says as she looks inside. "A bit cozy in there, Qrow." She quirks an eyebrow at him.
"Cozy, but fast and tough~" He tosses Reaper another wink as he walks over and taps a button on his agent, unlocking Beastie. Opening the driver's seat door, he calls out to everyone, "Gonna do a quick check of her engine, but we can get going in 5!" He then went about doing a quick engine and systems check. It was a Choom engine like most cars were at that point, but that mattered less. As he thought on that point however, he called out towards the suit again, "Oh, is there a place I can refuel my girl here?"
"It smells different here." Reaper says as she sniffs the air. "And there's no noise...except that." "I imagine if these poachers are cutting down trees, that would mean large lumber equipment? Perhaps? Might be more noisy than you thing." Olivia considered, tapping her chin.
“I do have a question. Once spotted, is there anything I can do with the facility to aid in our capture of the raiders? Lockdown? Alarm? Call for reinforcements? What is it that can be done to increase our odds of success?”
"You can control the drones with your cyberdeck. You'll see when you reach the Ranger Station. There is no lockdown, or an alarm. We don't have reinforcements. You are our reinforcements, and the increase of our odds of our success - it's why we hired you all. And yes, there's fuel tanks at the Station. Go do your jobs."
"The sooner we get there the more time we have to scout the area and see if there is a good spot for tagging these gonks." Olivia nodded, agreeing, and got into Beastie, sitting next to Reaper. Wow. It was cozy. "Hi."she said, sheepishly, noticing how close the seats were. It's like they were almost squished, so she spoke to break the ice a little.
MAKING SKILL CHECKS Checking out our surroundings
The first part of our mission involves getting Beastie to the Ranger Station, and the rest of us getting a feel for our new surroundings. Everyone is going to make a skill check and here's how. I've listed below what you're going to roll. When you make a skill check, you find the BASE of your skill in question on your character sheet, and roll a 1d10, trying to BEAT the DV (Difficulty Value) i've laid out. Use Beyond's dice roller, making sure to change the d20 to a d10.
For example, if you look above, Olivia has a BASE Perception of 13. It's her skill level in Perception + her INT STAT = 13. That means, when she rolls a Perception check, it's 13 + 1d10. So, here's how you make the roll.
EXAMPLE:
Perception: 14 vs DV13 - Oh wow, that's a great start. I rolled a 1. Isn't that awesome? lol (I'll explain what happens when you roll a 1 or a 10 very soon)
PASS: If you pass, go ahead and RP yourself getting more comfortable with the layout, the sounds, the smells, and how the trees are all laid out. It's a general feeling that puts you more at ease, but it's not game breaking. It's really an opportunity to role play and practice making a skill check and how it works. FAIL:If you fail, it's tough for you to get more comfortable. Maybe Qrow's driving put you on edge, distracted you, or anything else minorly frustrating. Use your imagination and RP it appropriately, but it should be something you can get over quickly.
Qrow: depending on passing or failing, roleplay how the ride went.
Qrow: Drive Land Vehicle Check vs. DV14 Everyone else: Perception Check vs. DV13
I was not a happy camper (no pun intended). I'm a middle eastern netrunner. My prefered biomes of choice are the cold, lifeless, and neon hazed slabs of the concrete jungle, or the less appealing, yet still infinitely more lively scalding deserts. You may think I'm crazy for calling a desert more lively than a city, but strip away the people, and you'll see more life within each grain of sand than the city. But this might get you thinking why I am not feeling all to hot in this forest. The short answer would probably boil down to "Because and **** you."
Feeling a little out of my element, and preferably out of my skin. The sooner we get to the ranger station, the sooner I can get somewhere more meaningful. "Hey Qrow. ETA?" It didn't take a genius to see that I wasn't feeling the general atmosphere, despite the beauty.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Perception 19
Reaper hops out of Beastie and stretches her arms in the air, trying to work out a few kinks from being crammed in the vehicle. She takes in the scenery before her and walks around a bit, starting to work out how to move softly in this terrain. She looks at the trees and mentally maps a route to climb one. Ok, this may not be too bad, I might be able to get high ground in one of these. She thinks to herself as she grabs her gear. "You guys coming?" She asks heading toward the ranger station.

ROLLING 1s and 10s
When you make a check of any kind, be it a skill check or an attack, if you roll a 1, it's a "fumble". Something bad happens that you can role play appropriately. If you roll a 10, something "great" happens that you can role play appropriately. If you make a check and roll a 1, roll ANOTHER 1d10 and SUBTRACT it from your grand total. If you make a check and roll a 10, roll ANOTHER 1d10 and ADD it to your grand total. Keep in mind you can still PASS OR FAIL even though you've rolled a 1 or a 10 with the reroll.
So, for example, Olivia rolled a 1 on her Perception check, so I roll another 1d10 and get a 9, subtracting it from my grand total:
Perception: 14 - 5 vs DV13 = 9. She's totally distracted and can't do math, and I would roleplay it appropriately.
I mainly kept quiet as I can be, keeping myself jacked into my deck. Goggles on, I poured over the data they had, playing the footage of the men who were cutting down the artificial forest over and over, running it through some software to get some information.
