A few normal days of sea travel aboard ship pass rather peacefully and uneventfully. The calm that has settled over everyone during the last few days is disturbed by a call of warning from the crow's nest of something in the water off to the starboard.
Still some distance and hard to make out the waves seem to be lapping at something like a reef in the ship's path. It can't be a reef this far out to sea. The swell of the waves washing over whatever this is makes it hard to make out until you draw nearer.

It's definitely not a reef. Whatever it is, it's floating near the surface. After taking a good look you notice it move against the current which means it can't just be some flotsam.
It is most assuredly a living thing.

Pepin looks around and sees ropes on the Deck, as he has done often he attaches the rope to the ship with one end and to himself with the other. As he has done so often when repairing the ships on voyages with th consortium. (Not sure myself what the best way to do it is, but Pepin sure would:P also got pitons, hammer and all artisan's tools at my disposable to do this; let me know if a check is necessary.)

If they agree he uses one of his wild shape and summons a quipper as a familiar in the water and goes into it senses. Bait swims as far as he can not leaving more than a hundred feet from Tempe's mind, then looks at what the monster or whatever the creature is while keeping in swimming step, with the ship.

"Pepin, is that safe? Surely something that large is covered in claws and teeth used to tearing things much tougher than rope..." Petcan rubs his hands together nervously. "Might be better to go around."
The quipper sees a huge body, eyes, and many tentacles. (Assuming quipper is swimming?)
Irraxan sees a huge body, and some tentacles. (Assuming Irraxan is flying? correct me if I'm wrong)
Pepin easily ties a rope to himself and secures it to the mast, ready to leap into the water.
The living thing in the water begins moving toward the ship before disappearing beneath the waves.
Once underwater it ignores the quipper and moves rapidly toward the ship.
(With the scouting and possibly a warning you all have 1 round to prepare for whatever happens next.)

@Tempe: I think you can talk to animals, no? Might it be worth trying to talk to the Kraken?
In any case, Zenodor is not keen on being grappled and dragged below by tentacles).
Zenodor observes the creature through his familiar's eyes. After a while, he snaps back to himself.
"We best brace for a fight. Captain: Any crew not needed to keep the ship afloat or defend it should take shelter below decks!"
After pondering the tentacles for a moment longer he adds: "I fear I would fare poorly in a wrestling contest with such a beast. Perhaps best to remain out of range."
Zenodor then flies up into the air above the ship with the idea of staying outside of tentacle-grabbing range.
Not privy to what Petcan just said Tempe says loudly "My fish saw a creature, huge body, eyes, and many tentacles. It ignored Baitfish and headed directly towards us like its on a mission. It seems to swim fast." He tells Baitfish to inform him on which side Bow front, Port left side, Starboard right side, Stern back. As he comes to his own senses
ooc: @Brian If this thing is climbing on the ship, can I cast spike growth on the outer hull of the ship? Bottom and sides of course.
@Zenodor we could probably talk to this if it is a Kraken but if it is a Kraken it is a monstrosity not an animal. This is most likely an Aberration ether way Unless its a giant octopus
”Whoever is going to fight it up close, let me give you some protection,” says Randall. He moves a bit towards the center of the boat for stability and casts Freedom of Movement on the first person to take him up on his offer (or on himself if there are no volunteers)

Baitfish is able to relay that it is on the starboard side and is freakishly larger than a giant octopus before it thuds into the ship stopping it's progress.
Everyone needs to make a DC 15 DEX save or be knocked prone (except for anyone under the Freedom of Movement spell).

Pepin takes Randalls offer before diving into the water from the ship. Furthermore he uses his action to magically create a tiny eldtrich cannon (force balista) which is stuck to his armor on his shoulder and his BA to cast magic weapon on his warhammer; spellsmith ability, see below.
Initiative: 6
(Spellsmith: You know the mending cantrip. You can also cast the magic weapon spell with this trait. When you do so, the spell lasts for 1 hour and doesn’t require concentration. Once you cast the spell with this trait, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for these spells.)
