Watching Zyl curiously as she starts her ritual she watches what she does for the first few minutes then for the last bit of time it takes, she wanders over to the magenta dust examining the footprints. “These look the right size for the sage?”
Elric shuffles awkwardly at the implications of what he has just heard. "So Matreous might be the one who can save our village, and he seems to have stepped into..."he trails off as his gaze fixes on the residue.
A hundred thoughts cross Elric's mind: how arcane magic is a different craft to the spiritual power that comes to him so naturally; how his friends back home are relying on this small group to save them all; how he heard the words of Chauntea herself telling him that his destiny lay in a great act of sacrifice.
He regains his composure "OK then, I'm ready. I would like to go first"

Gan has been hanging back through this whole episode, up until they enter the chamber. He's not... shy. But he's certainly hanging back. Uncomfortable in his own skin, or just in this sort if scenario, it's hard to tell which. Once they see the residue, his affect starts to change a bit, seeming a bit more alert. After hearing the description of the spell, he steps forward and pulls an unlit torch from his pack. He stops in front of the residue and squares himself before swinging the brand, really nothing more than a fancy stick, at the residue, underhanded.
Assuming he's proficient with sticks, and adding dex for a basic "throw thing at thing" roll": 18
"Nedni, that seems to be residue from an extradimensional plane or space. He must have had the book in hand when the portal was opened, but I don't think he burst into a shower of dust, he probably just put the book down and went through."
Zyl runs her fingers over the smooth pages, appreciating the fluid beauty of the arcana calculations in the notes, like seeing the steps on an intricate dance.
"He's an impressive mage though, Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion is a tricky spell, and he seems to have figured out how to cast a PERMANENT version! That's incredible. But we have the command word when you're ready Elric. I'll follow."
Zyl sees Gan swinging with a torch, and looks at him with concern and confusion.
"Umm... Gan? What are you doing? Do we have invisible company?"
As the portal has not yet been opened by the command word, the torch swings freely through the space above the residue on the floor: nothing invisible there, at least not yet.
(He was tossing it, not swinging! Just a test to see if there was a portal still open. But we need to command word to make it active, which makes sense.)
Zyl waits until everyone prepares whatever they are preparing for what might come out of the portal, she stands at the ready (or hovers as the case may be for her), crystal clutched in one hand, spellbook in the other.
When the command word is said, shimmering, translucent double doors appear on the patch of the magic dust; they open by themselves, revealing a hall with another more mundane-looking door and stairs leading upward. The hall looks like it continues in both directions but you can't see any more of it from outside the portal.
"Amazing!", Fembris says. "The sage must be somewhere in there. Shall we take a peek inside?"
“Absolutely!” Nedni says in awe, “ Um..After you!” She says turning to Gan and gesturing ahead of them a little wide eyed. “Zyl, what happens to people inside it if it closes?” She asks Zyl.

Elric steps forward confidently. "Here goes nothing" he declares, maybe a little too confidently, and steps through the double doors. He looks east and west before listening to the simple door: Perception 12 or Investigation 4
Zyl looks to Nedni and tries her best to sound reassuring as she watches Elric go through. "Well, umm... depends on the environment of the plane the portal leads to of course but closing the portal shouldn't hurt you. This portal seems quite stable, very advanced magic, way beyond anything I have learned to do."
Zyl looks at the portal, seeing if she can figure out anything more now that it's open
Gan steps through, grasping the handle of his axe as he does. It's not loose from the loop it's been resting in on his back, but he seems to calm himself a bit, feeling the smooth wood surface in his rough hand. He's looking around, preparing for the worst. "What could go wrong. Step into a sparkly portal in a powerful mage's room. Surely he's not stuck in here, and if he was, of course some country bumpkins can defeat whatever arcane trap he's stumbled into,"he sighs, just so far into pessimistic sarcasm that the group can't help but laugh. "I have a bad feeling about this," he says, in case no one got the sarcasm.
He steps in, to the right, and peeks down the hallway, and up the stairs.
Nedni follows along behind Gan with her head up, not nervous at all....nope calm, calm, calm. She looks over the door in front of them and listening cautiously.

As he does so, the doors of the portal slam shut. Fembris looks back in shock; "They closed on their own!" He tries pulling at the doors' handles but they won't budge. He also tries the command word, "Scepter", but there is no reaction by the doors.
You examine your surroundings. You can't really hear anything through the door directly to the north. To the east and west are three doors each, in addition to the stairs leading upward.

Gan looks to the smarter members of the group. "So, now what? Lots of doors. Lots of chances to get stuck, or eaten, or maybe find a way out. Ha. Right."
Any footprints, or markings on the floor, walls, or ceiling?
"So much exploring to do, I suppose we'd better start by checking all these doors" says Elric, trying to put a brave face to his concern at the closing of the portal behind them. "No noise from behind this one, let's have a look"
He opens the door immediately north.
