Ressys, Kotar and Qidira have all heard of mephits, and assume that given the location, Orvo is referring to the ice mephit sub-variety.
Difficult to spot in snow and ice, impossible if it doesn;'t move, the ice mephit is a small and evil elemental creature. Relatively fragile, they can nonetheless pack a punch, with a nasty breath weapon and a tendency to explode upon death.
Staying within the camp site for the moment, Durnham livens up the fire and the chittering intensifies. Orvo looks cautious but not too concerned: "I'm happy to wait for them if you are? They might even leave us be..."
Brandon rises early and helps to break down the camp and pack his equipment for the journey ahead. Like every one of the other days of the journey, he grabs his longsword and goes through a series of exercises, his feet tamping down the snow as he moves through his drills and his sword becoming an extension of his will. He stops, eyebrows raised at Orvo’s warning and he looks for any sign of the creatures in the ice and snow near the camp. Perception: 11.
“Perhaps they will pass us by, but we should be prepared in any case”he replies to Orvo. With a short gesture of his hand, dark shadows rise from the ground around him, strengthening him from beyond the grave. He secures his shield and waits to see if the creatures do leave them alone. (5 Temp HP)

The night passed without alarms and Kotar awoke feeling rested. Keeping in mind that there was always chance for a combat, he made a few warm-up exercises before doning his armor. With the shield in his arms he ate the breakfast mostly in silence, pondering if it wouldn’t be rude to restart the talk of the day before and ask Brandon what he meant when saying that names meant little in the Righteous Brand.
The goliath finished his meal before coming to a decision and soon after start to help to break camp. Then came Orvo’s warning and Durnham’s question.
“I wouldn’t bet on that, Orvo.”He said pulling his sword. Truth be told the fighter wanted to wield his halberd, but Mephits had the habit of exploding while dying. It would be better to let the damaging to his ranged companions, and to make himself harder to hit while distracting the creatures.“And they are small elementals, Durnham. The aggressive, evil kind that have an ice breath so better spread out. They also explode when taking a killing so attack from range if possible.”
Can I push them away with my shield? He questioned with the voice of his mind, trying to find the location of the small ice creatures.
Qidira hears the warning and suggestion to spread out for both breath and explosive effect, try to separate herself more from the main group utilizing her above attack (post 961) as soon as she spots one within range. If cover is impossible, she'll try to use the depth of snow compared to her size to advantage.
Hearing the chittering increase with the increase to the fire, Durnham wonders if they fear fire... or maybe just hate it. “They reacted to the fire... I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. If they explode... and breath large areas of cold... we should probably go to them so we can back away and avoid that.” He then mentally tells Archimedes to fly above and get a view of the area.
He swings his staff around and readies his dagger... he grins viciously as he feels well prepared for this type of fight.
The group spreads out a little as Archimedes takes off to fly in an increasing-radius loop to scout the surrounding areas. He heads north for about 30 ft and then turns clockwise, starting the loop. He makes it about 30 ft into his loop when he sees six ice mephitis – small, spiteful-looking creatures – standing in the snow about 70-90ft to your east. They are standing in a line running north to south and chattering angrily in your direction.

Qidira, spotting the distance the Mephits appear away from them, pockets her daggers quickly and pulls her Crossbow instead, starting with the one farthest south crouches low in the snow making as much use of the cover as possible and fires off a shot. @DM

Spotting the creatures, Brandon moves thirty feet to his front, moving just in front of Qidira to offer the group some protection with his shield. With Kotar’s warning of the creature's evil nature fresh in his mind, Brandon decides to attack from range. Dark shadows and green swirls of energy gather in his hand as he releases an Eldritch Blast at the creature to his direct front (4th from the top).
Brandonmoves ahead of Qidira and sees the mephits appear at the edge of his vision through the snow. He fires an arcane bolt at one of the creatures but it flies wide, disappearing into the whiteness beyond.

Durnham moves until he’s about 90 ft from the nearest mephit. He then reaches into his pouch and draws out the small diamond. Holding it in the palm of his free hand he stares into its depth a moment focusing on the facets that reflect the red of heat and fire from the light surrounding them, heat from the campfire and the air around them is drawn together above the gem as Durnham mutters his incantation.
A small ball of Flame about 4 inches across begins to form above his outstretched hand and the diamond in it. With grim determination he then points with the staff in his other hand at the mephit.
”Flame ball!” He shouts as the ball of fire zips towards the mephit.
(Durnham is about 75ft from the mephits, is he retreating or was that just in case he was further out?)
The young wizard hurls his orb of flame and it strikes a mephit in the middle of the pack. The fire seems to have a particularly strong reaction with the creature's body and it melts with a scream before exploding in shards of ice. The other mephits are placed just far enough apart to avoid the shrapnel.
Archimedes flies overhead and surveys the battle, but sees no sign of further danger at the moment.

Ressys surveys the field and decides, at least for the moment, that he will stay in his normal shape. The damage the fire attack of Durnham cast left him hopeful his best attacks will be made producing flames himself.
A flickering flame appears in his hand as he moves forward 30 feet. He holds the flame he produced and readies himself to throw the flame at any of the ice mephit's that get within 30 feet of him.
Ressysconjures a ball of flame in his hand and assumes a battle stance, waiting for a mephit to approach.
Orvotakes a similar approach, drawing his longbow and waiting for a mephit to appear through the snow.
Qidiraedges forward until she can see a mephit through the snow, then fires at the elemental on the southern end of the line. The bolt strikes it square in the chest, sending off shards of ice and eliciting a squeal from the creature but not taking it down.
The mephitis advance through the snow. Ressys’ ball of fire arcs into one mephit and melts a portion of it away. Orvo’sarrow strikes the same creature and blasts a chink from its shoulder, but it continues its advance.
The mephitis continue their approach and you see that they are hovering above the ground, flying towards you at full speed – about the same pace as an adult human. Brandon and Qidira each find themselves face to face with a mephit, with two bearing down on Orvo and another flanking to the south.
As companions take their actions, Kotar rises his shield and advances into the snow, taking position in front of the others. He focus his eyes on any incoming attacks, preparing himself to block and dodge, to defend himself. of the elementals. Adult goliaths had a habit of using the creature to try scaring unruly children into behaving. Be quiet or the Mephit will come to get you was far from a strange phrase to hear around the younglings. Mephits are known for their freezing breath, he said with the voice of his mind, remembering many histories he heard around the fire. But I can deal with the cold. Or, at least, he could better than most.
“What are you waiting for, ice bats?” He shouted waving his blade, realizing how terrible he was at formulating insults and trying to provoke the enemies to focusing their fire on him. “Come over here!”
Maybe Brandon could help him think about better taunts. Kotar would ask later. For now, all he could do was hope the creatures would choose to strike him. Between his resistance to cold, his ability to fasten his generation and his natural endurance, the Fighter believed himself capable of taking all they had to throw. At least for a turn.
Notes: Kotar moves his full movement to get between the Mephits 2 and 3, and takes the Dodge Action.
