Cale seems to rouse from his slumber: "Those robes could be helpful, thank you Leosin". Looking to the others he says "Well, our first visit was so good, I guess we were always going to head back to make sure we'd seen everything, right? Otherwise it's just a waste of a ticket"
He smooths his jacket with his hands, checks his pack and get ready to leave.
The professor thinks back to the robes and knots the others wore in camp. Trying to remember anything that might help him figure out their ranking system. 15 insight.
”Well I can be persuasive… perhaps I can get into the cave with another person as my assistant or bodyguard.” He thinks a few moments. “The prisoner pen was really poorly made and it was up against the wall of the camp… maybe we can cause some kind of disturbance elsewhere and the pen can be released while the camp is distracted?”
Travis sits silently, not comfortable with maneuvers that require specific uniforms and even more specifically tied knots. "I will accompany you of course,"he says to the others. "And will gladly serve as your bodyguard Thaddeus. But perhaps your bodyguard is mute?" He adds the last sentence hopefully.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"I can take distraction duties or release the prisoners; I'm pretty swift so maybe I'm the best choice for shouting and then running away?"
Cale looks confident for a moment, then thoughtful. Suddenly, the rest of the party (but nobody else) hears Cale's voice as clear as if he were talking - yet his mouth does not move: "Running away hasn't been a problem before, might as well do it for a good cause I suppose"
Realising that the others heard him, he looks surprised. "Woah..."
@DM:
Cale just triggered his 'free' use of Psychic Whispers (gets one per day, then has to use a psi dice for any additional uses. Max of 4 targets at a time (twice proficiency bonus) and lasts for a number of hours equal to one roll of a psionic dice (currently d6) so here goes: 1
Inglenook takes a deep breath, letting out a sigh that's long enough to make people uncomfortable. "So we're getting dressed up again are we? I think with all this experience, when we're done with all this we can set ourselves up as a troupe of travelling entertainers."
He stands up, "I will miserably play the captured gnome again if it helps. But by god Professor if you hit me again I'll be breaking character and giving us up."
And taking a last swig of his breakfast wine, "Ok, let us get this done. My stomach is full and I'm in the mood to be mischievous."
Although Leosin did not include this on his drawings, you did spot the cultists wearing their camp ranks around their necks and remember them clearly enough to describe to others. The coloring matches with what Leosin said about dragon affinity (green for a green dragon, etc.) and the more dragon head beads means that the cultist is more important at camp. Thaddeus currently has one of the blue insignias with three beads in its knot.
@Cale
Cool ability! I see you rolled four hours, so that should be just enough time to get to the camp with about 20 minutes to spare if folks leave now.
(If folks are ready, I can move us back to being on the road)
Kirari listens to the discussion but doesn't feel that she has anything to add that would be any more useful than what's already been discussed and silently considers what she could do to enhance the strengths of the others.
As Cale seems to speak with no change in his expression or movement of his mouth she stares a moment, pondering if she really heard him speak or if it was in her head. Maybe some additional blessing of her Goddess? As others react to it and he responds in surprise, she dismisses the idea. When Inglenook speaks of Traveling Troupes she grins to herself picturing a dummy puppet on the Rouge's arm.
"Lord Nighthill sir, I wonder if it might be too much to ask for a pearl? Only for this quest and I will return it to you. I have the ability to read the qualities of an item but lack this component that makes it work. This pearl would not be expended and will reveal the purpose of an object within a short period of time. This could perhaps aid us in gathering the information that you seek? I'd purchase one myself but struggle to come up with the funds as of yet." Kirari speaks with the quick inquiry, almost as an after thought as all start to rise to leave the dining hall.
(ready to get back on the road with any adjustment needed for possible granting of her request.)
The professor looks at Cale sharply as his thoughts ring in his mind. He blinks at him, “What was that? My Boy! Did I just hear your thoughts?! Fascinating!”
Cale looks back at Thaddeus, mouth hanging open: "I...think so Prof, yeah. I've had strange moments in the past when others seemed to know what I was thinking, but never this clear"
The rogue scratches at his itching palms, then shakes his head to clear it: "No point dwelling on it now I guess, but might be handy if we need to keep in touch"
@DM:
Thanks, I'm looking forward to using all his new features! I'll make a note of the time remaining.
(Cale is ready to head off, can walk & talk the plan as they go)
Nighthill considers Kiari's request and then motions to a page to get the item from the quartermaster. "Please, take this for as long as you need it," says Nighthill handing the pearl to Kiari. It is not very large, but it looks to have been carefully polished. Then, Escobert the Red stands up and says, "Aye, let's be off, and although Leosin has to wait back here, I am happy to join the fray with ye if you think my axe would be of use to ye!"
(Now knowing two ways to the raider's camp, Leosin's shortcut and the raider's trail, it would take just about 3 and a half hours to go with the raiders' trail and about 2 hours and 45 minutes to take Leosin's route.)
Travis scowls when Cale's voice appears in his head, then looks over at the rogue, staring intently for a moment. When he gets no response, he smirks. "I guess it only goes one way, eh?" he says. "Probably for the best...no one wants to hear what I'm thinking right now. So, do I need to put on a cult costume and tie some knots before we go?"
Before they get up from the table the professor interjects. “Captain, I don’t mean to sound indelicate here, but did you not promise a certain amount of payment for our services? We are risking our lives after all and the coin will help us purchase gear from your stores and supplies to better support our next mission. Speaking of this next mission… there’s been no mention of.. hmm… enumeration. As much as we wish to be of service, we also need to continue replacing our provisions and supplies.”
Appreciative of the Professor's handling of the more delicate subject of payment for them, Kirari watches for the Captain's response demonstrating her own interest in the answer.
Then as the quartermaster is sent and returns, Kirari turns to address Lord Nighthill taking the proffered Pearl admiring it a moment (internally confirming the value is appropriate for the spell's requirements), "This will be perfect. Thank you. I will return it when we do." She rises from the table and nods to Leosin. "That shortcut you mentioned will save us much time returning. Let's be off then?"
(with the pearl, Kirari can identify items via Ritual Casting whenever they require, time permitting - 10 min)
Nighthill rises to meet the professor. “Of course; I have been swept up in the news, and you have risked so much for us. I promised you all 250gp a piece for Leosin’s return, and I can pay the same to each of you when you get back with information on the troop movements. If you need arrows, swords, or armor, please also visit the quartermaster who will be able to sell you provisions.” Nighthill motions to his page who gives each party member a small leather pouch with 250gp in it.
Kirari smiles at receiving the coins, "If you'll allow me then, I'd like to purchase the Pearl? 100 g?" She offers a hundred gold pieces back to him in payment, awaiting his answer then looking to the others.
"I do have business with the Quartermaster and can accompany any others that'd like to go with me? I have coin to spend there." She glances at Leosin, "Might there be a chapel to Selune here? Or at least a shrine? I should pay my respects before I leave."
At the Quartermaster's Kirari is looking for some rations and spiked armor if available. At the Chapel, Holy Water and to pay tithes.
@DM -
Subtracting 100 g for the Pearl
Question -> For her domain - 10 minutes per short rest proficiency with tool or skill - may I use Xanathar's Tool Proficiencies list as a guide to what is considered a tool? (I've linked it there)
She'd like to purchase spiked armor is 75 g if they have it and will give her half the value of her own studded leather (45 g) in exchange, she'll pay the 52 g 5 sp for it. Plus 4 days of rations (1 day) for 2 g. - total 54 g 5 s to the Quartermaster. (then if domain question above allowed Jeweler's tools 25 g, playing card set .5 g, cook's utensils 1 g) making that total 81 g.
If she can find a chapel or similar for Selune or at least a representative of the church, she'd like to purchase 1 vial of Holy Water (flask) (25 g) and donate 25 g to the chapel.
If all is possible out of the 250 g she has 18 g left and will add to my character sheet with the above items. Sorry shopping is fun...I hope that made sense
The professor accepts the pouch and holds it thoughtfully a moment before sliding it into his bag. “Thank you Nighthill.”
He then turns back to Leosin “If I am to pass for a higher ranking cultist… what can I do with the knots we have available here, to improve my rank and my chances? Might it be helpful to have another person with some rank as well?”
As Travis enquires with the quartermaster, they do not have a full set of plate armor, but they do have a breastplate, and for the Hero of Greenest, they would part with it for only 300gp. (AC 14 + Dex modifier (max 2))
Nighthill nods at Kiari that she may keep the pearl and the boy takes the 100gp back. Leosin motions to the garden and says, "There is a small shrine outside in the quadrangle."
@Kiari
Shopping is fun :) The quartermaster would have those items for you but does not have the spiked armor. They have scale mail (50 gp) or some chain mail (75gp) if you would rather. The domain sounds good to me if you wanted to get those other items.
The small shrine would also have a donation box for your kind offering.
Leosin turns to the professor and says, "We could try to have an artisan make another rank knot, but I fear we would not have the time to get it right. Do any of your fellow adventurers possess such a skill?"
"Thank you. I will tend to my equipment needs quickly, pay my respects at the shrine then return as swift as I might, pleased to help in any way that I can with the working of disguises." Kirari offers as she leaves to handle business within the community.
She waits for any others who have business with the Quartermaster then goes to meet them and requests a set of scale Mail , playing card set , cook's utensils , and a holy water (flask) if they carry the latter. If possible she will negotiate half the value of the studded leather in trade. Once done at the Quartermaster's she moves on to the Quadrangle and seeks the shrine placing her donation (25 g) within and paying her respects in prayer. She then returns to the barracks and the group.
(have adjusted my character sheet for above as if successful, will make changes if any is not.) (also added and adjusted for 4 days rations and 5 flasks of oil as I'm carrying a perfectly good bullseye lantern with no oil. )
Should some time permit, Kirari will also separately check in on Jillian's family spending few gold to be sure they are recovering well having developed a fondness for the family making her gifts subtle as not to draw undue attention. (deducted an additional 5 gold to assist with enough to share supplies with friends and family)
