I'm looking to reboot a campaign that fizzled due to my own incompetence.
For long ages the Elves of Celador defended their domain vigorously. While many races lived under the supremacy of the elves, the incursion from the outside was violently discouraged. The 200 years ago, unbidden, the Elves retracted their defenses, and allowed settlements at the edge of the woods. while their core territories are still guarded, many new cultures have expanded into the area.
Our campaign will begin in Daven's Falls, a logging, hunting and portaging community at the base of a moderate waterfall. It lies not too far from the edge of the forest, but is certainly far enough in that the elves of old would not let it exist. Largely settled by humans, with a smattering of other races, it boasts a reputation as a bustling village on the rise, a local trade hub and a self-reliant populace. You have been called to the Sinking Castle tavern to meet with Undermayor Harbin, who you've heard might have a problem in need of your skills.
Please propose a 1st level character. I'm looking for 4-6 players. The world is being created, so I'm not restricting much. No Bloodhunters or guns. I'm not looking for complete characters immediately, I'd like to "session zero" to try and link up some relationships and tweak some things.

LE and CN are on notice. Deity Info is in the spoiler. These are universal deities although some cultures and races have differing names and ways of worship.

Coriana - Company of the Grey Chain Wagner - Dragon Heist: Bards. DM - The Old Keep
Name: Ammus Qelunax Gender: Male Race: Dragonborn (White) Class: Ranger Alignment: NG Description/Backstory: Ammus was abandoned at an early age, wandering to woods until he was taken in by a group of forest nomads. Learning the ways of the wilds, Ammus was trained to defend both the woods and nearby civilizations from each other. Now, he's accepting his first task from a nearby town of Daven's Falls in order to prove himself.
"I've found that the wild and the civilized are much like the air and the earth; neither can truly exist without the other." - Ammus
Name: Jheric Gender: Male Race: Human (Variant) Class: Wizard Alignment: TN Description/Backstory: Jheric's family moved to Daven's Falls to start a simpler life. Leaving a life of chaos, his parents took up working at the tavern, as well as other odd jobs around town. Despite leaving their former lives, their son grew up finding many curious relics. Books and weapons all held a hundred stories. In time, his mother even agreed to teach him some of her arcane arts from her dusty books. Jheric took to it quickly and studied them whenever he could.
Years later, his mother has passed and Jheric tends the tavern with his father, Fin. The grizzled veteran still stirs a commotion with his old war stories. The people laugh, but Jheric knows from years of retelling and questions, the monsters that he boasts of were all too real.

Characters:
Grishkar Darkmoor, Necromancer of Nerull the Despiser Kelvin Rabbitfoot, Diviner, con artist, always hunting for a good sale Bründir Halfshield, Valor Bard, three-time Sheercleft Drinking Competition Champion, Hometown hero
Kilian Gotlieb, male, variant human druid: ddb.ac/characters/59072426/D1ymSm
Alignment: somewhere in the NG/TN range. I'd say he aspires to NG but can be ruthless about getting something if he really, really wants it.
Backstory: Kilian was (is?) part of a collective that studies the secrets of Urian, attempting to discover whatever secrets the stars may hold. His research now, though, is different from what it used to be. While his colleagues still look for mundane details, Kilian believes he's found secrets that go way beyond what anybody else thought possible. He would be in Daven's Falls looking for maybe an old shrine to Urian, or some sort of place of worship, or someplace where he might find a unique view of the night sky. Maybe the old elves knew something. Maybe they missed something. Maybe whatever the Undermayor needs is linked somehow to his research.
Name: Evangeline Xerxes Gender: female Race: fire genasi Class: sorcerer Alignment: neutral good
Description/Backstory: Evangeline belonged to a desert clan in which she was a member of the matriarchal witches who led, advised, and healed the clan. A nomadic existence in an arid landscape led to a sudden confrontation with a pod of desert-dwelling purple worms. Survivors realized they were too few in number to continue on, so the clan broke up with most dispersing into other regional groups. Evangeline decided to leave; to discover for herself how where her magic comes from and how, if possible, to teach it to others and re-establish the clan in a new domain. Arrival in the verdant Celador is a marvel to her, and she believes she can discover more about her gifts amongst the practitioners of this land.
Name: Kellan Blackstone Gender: Male Race: Half-Elf Class: Ranger (Hunter) Alignment: Neutral Good Description/Backstory: Kellan has lived in Daven's Falls all his life. He was born to a human mother and elven father, although he knows next to nothing of his elven father. His mother rarely speaks of him. His looks mostly favor his mother, although his heritage is not a secret in the village and people do treat him differently because of it. Luckily, his mother is the youngest daughter of the well-respected Blackstone family, who run the lumbermill in the village. In an effort to fit in and be useful, Kellan quickly took to the woods, teaching himself the ways of survival and hunting for game. He has also become an unofficial member of the village watch, serving to alert authorities of anything suspicious in the woods surrounding the town. It was because of Kellan's quick, watchful eye that an attack by a small, wandering party of goblins was averted and the beasts quickly dispatched by Kellan and the village militia. Though not incredibly religious, Kellan follows the teachings of Thellyne, goddess of the hunt.
Dodge was adopted by a human family in a small village on the edge of a vast swamp. Talented with a bow, he joined the militia that defended the town as a young man. Around that same time, a group of adventurers passed through town. These were great heroes and they spotted something the town folk either couldn't see or had learned to ignore. There was a secret cult in the town dedicated to dragon worship. The heroes exposed these heretics and drove them out. When they left, Dodge and the other townfolk were in awe at their skill and courage. Then the dragon came. A vicious black horror, Dodge's militia was no match and it devastated the village that had dared to see its cultists chased off. When a caravan passed by a week later, Dodge was one of only a handful of survivors, left to suffer in cages along the trade road.
Recovered from his injuries Dodge now makes a meager living as a bounty hunter. He carries a lot of anger over what happened. He blames the cultists for worshipping the dragon. He blames the adventurers for provoking the beast but leaving before the black dragon's vengeance came. But most of all he blames the dragon... overcome with futile rage knowing he could never find or challenge such a creature. Dodge is a damaged character, but not broken. While he is rough around the edges, deep down he longs to once again be a part of a community, a team, a family. He wants to make a difference. He is chaotic neutral on the outside, but chaotic good on the inside.

Description/Backstory: Kylan comes a real small village, where fruits and vegetables grew, but aspirations shrivelled. Hearing of a frontier settlement from a patron at The Ladle & Bucket where he worked evenings, he begged his parents if he could go! Hearing none of it, telling him to join his twin sister and younger brother helping in the fields. When not working, he trained. When not on the fields, he trained. Unknown to his parents, their words of doubt only fuelled him... seeing his determination, his siblings supported him; taking on his work on the farm, making sure was up in the crack of dawn and checking him in training.
Many many days passed and the time had come when he finished at The Ladle and Bucket early and back with a big step in his plan - his own sword. Everyone could tell it would a point of contention over dinner, but no one could have told the storm of a row it triggered. So much so, Kylan was kicked out his home and he has never looked back since, not even to say goodbye to his siblings...
Appearance: Angus is a young man in his early twenties, with short red hair, a slim frame, and stands a couple inches less than six feet. His usual attire includes a white linen shirt and brown vest (he wears his leather armor over this), brown trousers (a size too big) fastened tightly by his belt, and faded leather boots. He carries a violin on his back (and ranged weapons if he has any, depending on how character creation goes), and his melee weapons (TBD) on his belt. In addition, he wears a brown traveling cloak with a hood.
Backstory: Angus was born and raised in a larger town of Blackleaf the son of a farmer, often getting into trouble with the other boys his age. After a particularly daring adventure with his friends (something involving a scarecrow, a barn, and a burning wagon), he was no longer allowed to associate with them. When he turned 18, he and his friends left town to become adventurers for the fun of it. They called themselves "The Bards of Blackleaf", as they all played instruments. During their adventuring career, they weren't exactly the most dignified of heroes (they made some enemies with authority figures in a few towns), gaining a reputation as "hooligans" of sorts. Their last adventure involved Angus leading an attack on a bandit camp. Unfortunately, they underestimated the bandits' numbers and were all brutally murdered except for Angus, who ran and hid during the middle of the fight after seeing they were outnumbered. He now wanders the countryside, trying to avoid being recognized as a member of his former adventuring party.
Personality: Angus puts on a cheerful act around any kind of company (even towards enemies he's fighting), and befriends people at any opportunity. He intentionally plays up his "simpleton farmboy" qualities because he thinks it makes him more "charming".
Name: Gwildiir BarkFoot Jnr Gender: Male Race: Halfling Class: Ranger (beast master) Alignment: Lawful Neutral Description/Backstory: Gwildiir has a lot to prove, to himself and to his family. Taking up his late fathers quest, Gwildiir has set out from his village to complete his fathers beastiaries, a collection of observations of unworldly beasts and innocent critters. He takes his time, carefully documenting and drawing all he sees.
Name: Fizzlebit Forton Thornberry the Fourth Gender: Male Race: Gnome Class: Bard Alignment: Chaotic Good
Description/Backstory: Fizz is a small, young gnome with an optimistic outlook on life looking for new experiences, good company and a nice cold glass of milk. Fizz comes from a long line of successful jewelers. He always displayed some talent in jewel making but his true passion was dancing, singing and storytelling. His father saw this talent and saw opportunity to expand their gnomish empire. They packed the finest Thornberry jewels in the family wagon next to Fizz's instruments. They went from town to town, Fizz would perform and crowds would come running. It was then his father swooped in to peddle their goods. They made quite the team until one night on the road a group of bandits spotted an easy mark. A pair of gnomes loaded with gold and jewelry, in retrospect it's a miracle they weren't robbed earlier but outside of Daven's Falls bandits took all Fizz had including his father. Beaten and bloodied Fizz was left for dead but he wasn't. He stumbled his way by chance to Daven's Falls where he recovered and decided he would make the most out of each day. He would see all the world could provide. He would make new friends, he would be happy and bring happiness to everyone he could.

Name: Lia Oakenheel Gender: Female Race: Half-Elf Class: Ranger Alignment: Neutral Good Description/Backstory: Lia is an orphan. Her parents were killed when a rival village raided the town when she was a young girl. She was taken in by an older man whom she called grandfather. He taught her the ways of the Ranger, training her in the bow, the blade, and the spell. As a girl, Lia showed a tremendous amount of potential and was quite adept in all the skills. When she came of age, she went out into the world offering her services as a protector to those who would pay for them.
Description/Backstory: Raised in a grand library, Misty was always asking questions and looking for answers. She found many in the pages of books, and more through her worship of Tinel. However some questions remained unanswered, some about old lore and magical secrets, others about herself – where she came from, who her parents were. After years of fruitless study, Misty realised she’d have to find the knowledge elsewhere. She set off traveling, visiting other libraries and helping everyone she can with the knowledge she’s learnt.

Name: Michael Morduck
Gender: Male
Race: Forest Gnome
Class: Wizard (Later an Illusionist)
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Description/Backstory: Morduck grew up in his local library, raised by a pseudodragon (simply called The Baron for some unknown reason) who taught him to read the arcane scriptures and avoid the prowling librarians. There he learnt the ways of the library - how to hide behind the bookshelves, how to read the grimoires. How to dream of a better world.
Then the library closed down for to a lack of funding and Michael was left all alone. He's spent the past year searching for somewhere new to call home and a group of people he can think of as family. (Also, he's only 11 years old.)
Sounds interesting. Here's a rogue who can provide a little healing support along with typical thiefish skills and abilities.
Name: Jack "Doc" Treadwell Gender: Male Race: Variant Human Class: Rogue (Planning to go Thief) Alignment: Neutral (trending goodish) Description/Backstory: Jack Treadwell grew up poor on the streets of the big city, doing what he had to do to survive and help feed his large family. He learned to be quick, sneaky, and good with a blade. When he accidentally killed a man in a bar brawl, though, he was given the choice of death or military service. That led to him discovering that he had a suprising knack for medicine, and he became a medic. He found he actually liked using his knowledge of weak spots and organs to help people rather than hurt them.
When he returned to the city, he hoped to maybe put up a shingle as a healer, but fate quickly led to him becoming a "mob doctor" in order to protect his sister's struggling inn from a local protection racket. Unfortunately when the mob boss's son died on the operating table, Jack was marked for death. He fled the city, using his military and criminal connections to make his way across the land, ending up far, far from home in a place called Daven's Falls. Now, he's looking for a way to put his various skills to use to put some money in his pocket.
Name: Gavick Vanhert Gender: Male Race: Hill Dwarf Class: Druid Alignment: Neutral Good Description/Backstory: Gavick is a old, long white bearded dwarf, originally a powerful wizard, his mind has been rapidly deteriorating, he doesn't even remember how to cast spells. Feeling useless, he went out to live in a swamp, lonely and peaceful. But living in this swamp, he found a special type of plant laced with nature magic, he uses it, with his previous knowledge of magic to harness a type of magic that doesn't need by the book intellect. Deciding it is finally time to come out of hiding, he begins to want to travel the forest making new discoveries.
Description/Backstory: Cage is a missionary veteran. Orphaned at a young age, and brought up by humans, he has always had a good nature even if he is constantly watched by others with a wary eye. He has become used to this and at times uses it to his advantage. Cage has been hired by many towns to assist in their protection of outsiders. He has always found this ironic as he was always an outsider to the town himself.
Cage has decided to retire from missionary work and is looking for something new. He is currently at the neighboring town looking for something to keep him busy.
Name: Alice Morningstar Gender:Female Race: Half-elf Class: Bard Alignment: Chaotic good Description/Backstory: (1-2 paragraphs Max):
Alice is a tad unusual, to say the least. Between the elven mother who abandoned her and the human father who kept her isolated for years, mistreating her all the while, she has every right to be angry at the world. But instead of lashing out as you would expect, Alice is one of the kindest people you will ever meet. Her social skills are... a bit lacking, but once you get past her shell of shyness, she's very friendly and soft-spoken. She's not naïve, but she give off a youthful innocence that has somehow not been tainted by her past. She ran away from home at a young age, and has since been wandering, trying to find her place in what is, to her, a mostly strange and unfamiliar place. One odd detail about her... she's always wearing long, white gloves that go past her elbows... and a black mask covering half her face, the color a stark contrast to her pale skin.
(I do have a more thorough backstory, this is just a quick teaser)
Name: Ignus Olocan Gender: Male Race: Fire Genasi Class: Wizard Alignment: Neutral Good Description/Backstory:
Ignus was born to a mortal half-elf mother and a djinn during a time of great turmoil across the Elemental Planes. His father and some companions were seeking refuge in the mortal plane, and spent quite a bit of time in his mother's village before moving on. Many of the djinns had Genasi children there - Ignus was one of seven. When one may have been shunned, the sudden and undeniable presence of seven of these incredible beings could not be ignored. The village brought them up and eventually began to model themselves after the most prominent Genasi. Ignus was not one of them. While the others grew into confident soldiers with fiery personalties, Ignus questioned what the deeper meaning of their existence was. What did it mean to be essentially trapped between the mortal and elemental planes? What responsibilities did they have to their innate powers and bloodline? Where did they fit amongst the cosmos? Ignus yearned for knowledge and for answers, and spent more and more time reading and studying as he grew older. By far the most intelligent of the village children, his mother proudly sent him off to embark on his quest to become a wizard at the age of 16.
Ignus found himself shunned from many towns and cities thanks to his charcoal skin, but refused to abandon his calling. He spent years sneaking into academy libraries, watching spellcasters from afar, and taking odd jobs that might further his abilities. Finally, in his mid-20s, a young but talented wizard simply known as Arius discovered Ignus reading an ancient and often ignored text in a library basement. He took him under his wing and encouraged him to continue honing his magic. Eventually, Ignus became quite good - and he and Arius began traveling together, seeking out the big questions they both had. Ignus even began to glimpse visions - the past? The present? Some even seemed to be of future events, but they were always foggy.

Gender: Male
Race: Gnome
Class: Bard
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Description/Backstory: Fizz is a small, young gnome with an optimistic outlook on life looking for new experiences, good company and a nice cold glass of milk.

Chilling kinda vibe.
Sounds interesting. Here's a rogue who can provide a little healing support along with typical thiefish skills and abilities.
Name: Jack "Doc" Treadwell
Gender: Male
Race: Variant Human
Class: Rogue (Planning to go Thief)
Alignment: Neutral (trending goodish)
Description/Backstory: Jack Treadwell grew up poor on the streets of the big city, doing what he had to do to survive and help feed his large family.

He has always found this ironic as he was always an outsider to the town himself.

Name: Alice Morningstar
Gender:Female
Race: Half-elf
Class: Bard
Alignment: Chaotic good
Description/Backstory: (1-2 paragraphs Max):
Name: Ignus Olocan
Gender: Male
Race: Fire Genasi
Class: Wizard
Alignment: Neutral Good
