Besha Stsant Tavern serves Shian fare primarily, but one of the kitchens prepares Tahesian dishes, spicy and aromatic, which perhaps came about – the opening of the kitchen to begin with, that is – due to the garrison in Kalahata and the Vale being primarily from the province on the southern border of Orraca u Shia, Fa Tahesi. For example, of the six garrison men and women present, all six wear Tahesian togas, and all six have ordered meals from the Tahesian window.
Other than that table however, the garb and customs of the rest are fairly uniform, even including the chimps and cats, and the tavern denizens seem quite familiar with each other, including the rivermen and women. Which is one reason perhaps, why Auger and Varielky drew such interest, though temporary, upon their entrance.
It so happens that those seated at the garrison table are just pushing back their chairs and preparing to take their leave, as have several of the Shians, for the afternoon’s business is starting to get back underway and shops wait to be reopened, when Snow arrives at the threshold to the tavern’s courtyard. Just at that moment, one final rainy gust whips the orange and red linens overhead and sprays the inhabitants lightly with runoff, before the air calms and the rain subsides for good.
Just as when Varielky and Auger entered, there is a pause in conversations as the tavern folk take in Snow’s entrance. But this time, instead of going back to normal, following Snow’s very convincing performance, many of the locals stare in curiosity. One of the cooks shouts out, “No beggars, no beggars here, cut your dramatics,” but Snow’s cutting words reaction leaves no room for doubt: something terrible must have befallen him. Two of the garrison rise and approach, and a circle of concerned faces forms around him. A man hands him a goblet filled with mead.”Here! Drink this, stranger! What happened to you??”
Snow looks around himself with a nervous expression on his face, particularly when the two imperials approach. He takes the mead and downs it, “Please friends, a little space”.
“Ok, I was walking along the road a ways downriver from here, when I saw some folk struggling with a couple of people. I rushed over and saw the couple had bags on their heads and were being dragged along by two men in orange floral livery, you know, the sort the Amazighs wear”, he says, then takes a deep breath.
“I told them they couldn’t just accost people like that and they just grinned at me, and that’s when it happened”, he says looking frightened at the imperials. “Something struck me from behind and knocked me to the ground, there were lots of people kicking me, but I could swear I saw the glimpse of an Imperial uniform. The one who snuck up on me was wearing it”.
He looks back to his empty goblet, not meeting anyone's gaze, “That’s when I lost consciousness. I have no idea how long I was out, but they were long gone when I woke”.
From where he sits Auger watches carefully to see the reactions of those in the tavern. Expecting the Imperials to act predictably, he focuses on the other patrons and the workers. Who's expressions reacted with actual shock and care, who shied away from the Imperials, who reacted to mention of the Amazighs?

Having been in many a bar fight himself during his years of teenage rebellion, we shall say, Snow knows all too well how he looks and acts with a bruised face, a split lip and black eye, and his illusion has been wrought with utter perfection. Neither Varielky nor Auger recognize him even faintly when he enters, but must convince their own minds of his true identity, based on the plan they’d made.
The garrison men who rose to stand in the circle of onlookers around Snow exchange stoic glances. Someone says, “I’m fetching the constable!,” and skitters off. A woman comes with a glass of water, and another, a quiet young woman wearing a white hijab and gold-embroidered kaftan and skirt dyed with the symbol of Ulella, god of healing, approaches Snow, assessing his wounds.
It must be said that many remain seated, either exchanging wry comments while glancing casually to see what is happening, while others roll their eyes, uninterested.
An old man alone at the table next to Varielky and Auger near one of the kitchens, reeking of liquor, shouts, “Nice shiner! What a pashetic loosher away?!,” and two heads turn, shouting him down.
The reaction to Snow’s story seems to vary depending on the individual. The garrison men exchange glances, then look over their shoulder at one of the women in their party, who was one of those who had risen and is standing near the door. Their Captain, perhaps. Neither Snow nor Auger have line of sight to her, but Varielky notices that she locks eyes with the man, then directs him with her glance: Snow. Outside. Meet me. Then she leaves, her jaw set.
The young woman — an acolyte of Ulella, certainly — regards Snow with confusion, her delicate features pale and confused in an expression of innocent astonishment. She spoke a few quiet words almost upon seeing Snow but has said nothing more.
The rest of those standing around him respond with anger, surprise, and fear, taking in, taken in, and swayed by his narrative. For many, repeating this exciting tale will be the highlight of their otherwise boring day, but regardless, honest concern is written on their faces as he tells it.
But there are several who seem to grind their teeth. They glance daggers at the garrison folks, who themselves, however, also seem ruffled in particular at the mention of the Amazighs. Not defensive, mind you, but ruffled: offended and angered by the tale as much as anyone else there.
Snow appears agitated, looking around at all the faces watching him. “Please”, he begs, his voice still raspy, “a little space”.
He accepts the water from the woman. “Thank you”, he says, holding his hand up to keep the others at a distance while he gingerly takes a sip.
He looks to the acolyte of Ulella, fixing her with his gaze and giving her a slight smile. “Is there anywhere I can go to rest, recover a little before continuing my journey in peace, away from the crowds? They make me nervous and I fear I have said too much in front of too many people”, he almost pleads, casting nervous glances at the others around, in particular the imperials.
Persuasion: 13
Reaction
If anyone tries to break his cover he will use cutting words: 3
”Why are you being like that? You would kick a man whilst he is down, at his lowest?”
Varielky watches as the woman sends her signals. What's more important? She could either try to see how the villagers are responding, or see what the imperials do in response. As she notices the reaction to the Amazighs being mentioned, Varielky decides on a course of action. Perhaps the empire doesn't have to fight along with the opium families, but against them. Or, if not, maybe they can stay uninvolved. Fighting on two fronts is not easy; holding the fight against one after the first was defeated could be important if the rebellion is to succeed. "Watch the people inside. If anything happens, find a way to call me."
Varielky doesn't waste time on further explanations. She stands up and walks to the circle around the captain, trying to look as concerned as the others, though she remains to the edge and silent. When she sees the man to whom the woman signalled leaving the tavern, Varielky will follow a moment later. She tries to follow them without attracting attention (not necessarily hide from them, but at least to not appear to be following them) - if possible - and attempts to eavesdrop on what they're saying/watch what they're doing.
Some rolls that might be relevant, if needed: Stealth: 12+1=13. Deception: 17+3=20. Perception: 13+3=16.
Auger keeps an eye on the locals, and Varielky joins the circle of onlookers surrounding Snow.
In response to Snow’s request for a place to rest, the Ulella Acolyte’s innocent eyes widen even farther, two dark pools encompassing all of her surroundings with compassion, and she nods slowly. “Yes, stranger,” she responds, her voice calm and like a child’s, “lean upon me if you need to.” She helps Snow to his feet, her slight frame perhaps drawing strength from conviction, and the onlookers part to allow her and Snow to pass.
Varielky notes when the two garrison men in the circle exchange a subtle glance, and with their bodies make to give Snow the air he requested while also putting themselves between Snow and the other onlookers, wordlessly.
Auger sees that the grim-faced teeth-gritting men and women in the tavern are staring daggers at the garrison men and looking hard at each other, but remain where they are.
(OOC: Does Snow exit the tavern with the acolyte? Varielky has already stated she will follow the garrison men if they follow Snow. Auger?)
Snow grips the acolyte's hand and allows her to help him up, but declines her offer of support whilst walking.
"Thank you, but I should be ok, just a little slow is all", he says to her as he starts to follow her towards the exit, being almost annoyingly slow with his limp.
Performance: (20+8) = 28
(OOC: Yes he will exit the tavern)
Reaction:
He is still prepared to use his cutting words if anyone tries to reveal his deception.
"Please, I just need some rest, I've told you all I know and now you are just badgering me"
Watching things play out around the room, Auger decides that the town is filled with the sort they are looking for. The wrong move -- or the right move, and these people might even choose to attack the Imperials. But Snow had asked them to observe, and then Varielky had asked him to do the same. Hopefully they would forgive him for pushing matters a little.
But first he would have to ready things a bit, to ensure he knows what is going on. Leaning back, arms crossed and letting anger show on his face, Auger summons Py to its place within the Sea of Stars and then while looking up into the early evening air, Auger summons Py directly above him.
Stay invisible, but observe what happens with Snow and Varielky outside. Snow is the one limping over there.
From its position above, Py turns invisible and maneuvers itself so it can do as instructed.
Auger ceases merely observing and starts commenting on matters along with the crowd, intending to join the voices of those who are upset. "Is this how things go in this town? I have heard of similar things in Asni. And Kalahata. Those in power stomping on those without. When will it end? " Auger is not attempting to be the leading voice among the onlookers, but hopes to keep things stirred up here. If the valley is to rise, more people would have to act on their anger. If needed: Persuasion 4 +8 = 12.

Snow exits the tavern beside the young acolyte, and the two garrison men turn and follow him, sweeping the room with their gazes as they go, their eyes alighting for a moment on Varielky, but moving on (a result of her high deception roll above: her timing is perfect and she waits until they are at the door before striding out behind them). The remaining garrison women and man seated at the corner table then follow out as well, taking a cue from their comrades.
Auger, upon their departure, joins in the hushed murmur of the townsfolk, who at first glare at him askance, their expression implying ‘what do you know about it?,’ in their casual dismissal of him, but still the murmur begins to grow, kindling catching fire among six or seven townsfolk there.
Outside the tavern, the acolyte pulls up short as the constable arrives, led by the tavern busboy who had run to fetch the lawman and who now points at Snow, and says, “It’s him, sir!,” and the constable pats the lad on the head and stands squarely before Snow. “Ya weren’t kiddin, Alif, oh he’s not doing well, is he. So…,” he asks Snow, thumbs tucked into his belt, “what happened?”
At the same moment, the garrison captain, a tall Tahesian woman, graceful and muscular in a yellow toga under her pale blue imperial livery, steps from a nearby doorway to also stand before Snow. The constable, Snow, the garrison captain and the acolyte now all face each other, as the garrison captain interrupts, “He has been attacked, can’t you see? We will see to him.”
“We?,” answers the constable, “you and the aco-…,” but he stops short when the two garrison men following Snow fall in behind the bard, Varielky behind them, the other three garrison fighters (two women, one man), after Varielky, the man tucking away the cards they’d been playing in a pouch on his belt and accidentally walking into Varielky from behind.
“Well if it isn’t tweedledee and tweedle wha? And all the tweedles too,” the constable picks up.
“Watch it, Mohand,” says the garrison captain.
The acolyte, eyes still wide, interrupts in her child’s voice, “This wounded man has asked for succor from Ulella. Come,” she says to Snow, making to lead him away but neither the constable —Mohand—nor the garrison captain, staring into each other’s eyes, move, and she has no path forward.
Snow pats the acolyte on the shoulder. "My thanks for your help, but you had best run along, this is no place for you", he says in his raspy voice, with a gentle smile. He hopes she leaves and no-one tries to stop her.
He glances around at all the imperials, noticing Varielky in the mix as well. "I didn't think my day could get worse, but I have the feeling I was wrong", he says with a big sigh.
Turning to look the constable in the eye, "I came upon a sight that was not for my eyes it seems, got involved and paid the price for it", in his mind he flashes back to the naga and trying to rescue the captives. Of the story Herru and Gwasila had told. "It seems imperials are involved in abductions, and these folk don't like that sort of talk", he motions to the captain.
He knows he is on real thin ice here, but he feels the need to push it this far, to see if the imperials are trying to cover something up or are interested in uncovering the truth in order to do something about it. There was obviously no love lost between the captain and the constable as well, which was interesting.
When she's bumped into from behind, Varielky instinctively reaches for her weapon, but quickly catches herself and sidesteps to let the man pass. Not the time for a fight, not yet. She needs to observe what's going on with Snow, first. She takes a few steps away, but she's still rather close. She has no idea what to do, so she just hopes to attract no attention.
Sensing he would have to do more to get the people in the tavern going, Auger raises his voice in reply to the skeptical looks and says, "I was in Kalahata just a few days ago and the Imperials were just rounding people up and throwing them in jail. Our boat was attacked by some Amazigh thugs before we could even get a mile up the Sebu. Do you all just let this happen here?" Persuasion, if needed: 16 +8 = 24.
(OOC: Is Py able to tell Auger what is going on outside? If not, Auger keeps directing it to get out and see.)

The curiosity of two passersby in the street is piqued, and the pair slow and stop perhaps ten feet from Snow and those near him, with the result that Varielky draws no attention when she, too, steps aside but remains close enough to hear and see whatever happens.
The acolyte looks at Snow uncomprehendingly, for to her mind perhaps defending him from the likelihood of exactly such a confrontation was what she thought he’d asked of her to begin with. She doesn’t move.
“Well, I’m still waiting to hear what the story is here,” says Mohand, the constable.
“He says,” answers the garrison captain, “in his foreign accent, that…,” and she summarizes Snow’s story exactly as he had said it earlier.
The constable responds to the tale with sympathy, his face scrunching up, saying “oh!,” and “ouch!,” as the narrative describes the attack on Snow. “Oh, boy. You have had a day, haven’t you? Let’s take a look at that shiner?,” and he gently extends a hand to touch Snow’s chin, to turn the bard’s face to examine the black eye. We’ll assume Snow pulls away, and the constable raises his hands, palms open, and backpedals, “Okay, okay stranger. Well, you’ve got Tememt here anyhow,” nodding towards the acolyte, “so you’ll be fine. Where did you say you were from? And what brings you here? And where exactly did this happen? And can you describe the person they took?”
Snow can see that the garrison captain is becoming impatient, but for the moment is allowing the constable to ask his questions.
(OOC: Snow, if you decide to answer these questions, make an investigation roll in addition to deception to see how well you can keep your story straight.)
Meanwhile, inside the tavern, Py responds to Auger’s question, ‘They’ve stopped outside and are speaking with a constable.’
Auger’s attempt to incite the tooth-grinders’ anger is successful. A man near him stands up and shouts in Auger’s face, “WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT IT??!! I LOST MY BROTHER TO THE FLOCKING AMAZIGHS!!” and swings his fist at Auger, connecting for 2HP bludgeoning damage. Another one stands up and likewise acts out his anger, helplessness and frustration by raising his fists to the one who openly challenged his inaction. “You think you know everything??!! I bet things are just the same where you come from!!,” and also strikes out at the southerner, grabbing him and trying to shove him prone (and failing).
Varielky and Snow will hear shouting coming from inside the tavern after their responses to the above.
Spitting out blood, Auger looks the two men, and those nearby, in the eyes while reaching into the Sea of Stars, just touching its power (Fey Presence: Fear, WIS DC16). Auger yells out, "In these last weeks I have dealt with Orcs running rampant on the planes, disorder in Kalahata and the attacks I mentioned before. Do you think I was mocking you?" Intimidation roll: 19 +5 = 24.
Still loudly, Auger goes on, "All this anger and you think attacking me is the right step? You're so addled you attack a stranger instead of focusing on your actual problems." Auger continues, more quietly, hoping to calm those listening to him, "The Amazighs. Or the Imperials. Or both." Persuasion (should it apply): 3 +8 = 11.
Snow puts two fingers to his left temple, making slow circles, “I’m sorry but my head is a little fuzzy and that was a lot of questions”.
He again thinks back to Herru and Gwasila, “I..I didn’t see their faces, as I said they had bags over their heads, but there was a man and a woman”, he goes on to describe the clothes Herru and Gwasila were wearing when they rescued them.
“It was a ways downriver towards Asni Village, I couldn’t say how far sorry. I’ve been looking for work, travelling up the river road, not that it matters”.
He goes quiet looking at the floor in front of him for a moment before meeting the constables gaze again, “Look, I understand folks are afraid of them Amazighs, and why there was an Imperial with them I cannot say, but I can see him a little clearer in my mind now, the imperial”. He goes on to briefly describe the Imperial that was the captive of the Naga.
“I’ve told you everything, can I please go and rest now?”
Deception: (15+8) = 23
Investigation: (4+7) = 11
Reaction
Still ready to use cutting words against any attempt to catch him lying or see through his disguise: (7+2) = 9
“This is too much, why won’t you folks leave me be, can’t you see I am suffering?”
Varielky waits and observes. If she intervenes, things might go way down south. She will only act if the captain seems in trouble, or if he asks for it. For now, she just watches. She has no definitive take on the empirals here, yet. At least they don't go justifying the Amazighs, or something.
When she hears the shouts from the tavern, Varielky reatrains herself from running and checking on matters there. If Auger needs her help, she's sure he'll find a way to call her. From here, she might even hear him if he just shouts louder than the rest of the voices.
The garrison captain’s eyes widen when Snow describes the imperial — she knew him, apparently.
The constable says, “Yup, so you were attacked all the way down near Asni Village and decided to walk all the way up here and just now got thirsty and walked into the tavern to ask for help, and those wounds still lookin fresh after all that walkin? What time of day did you say you were attacked?” He sees holes in the bard’s story, so we’ll say Snow’s cutting words are interjected at this point, which admirably serve to get the tone back on track.
The garrison captain, who has been lost in thought, staring daggers at a spot in the wall, now makes a decision, looks up at her subordinates, and, her voice seething, says “Come on. We’ve somewhere to be.” And the six turn to go. That is when the sounds of shouting and a scuffle from the tavern cause everyone to look inside.
Briar patches of dark Fey energy swirl in Auger’s eyes as he yells out his challenge, but the two pugilists are already themselves seeing red and it would take the “full use” of Auger’s feat (rather than “just touching its power” as described) to sway them now that their hearts are on fire. (OOC: The full use would also be apparent to everyone in the tavern and a high roll like the one Auger just had would cause a fearful stampede among these plain townsfolk.)
The first man punches Auger again, for 2HP damage, and the second one grapples Auger with a STR roll of 16. (OOC: Auger’s taunts have caused the pair to snap. Until they calm down & separate from the object of their fury—Auger—, words alone will have no effect (persuade or intimidate, e.g.))
Snow’s mind races, knowing that the constable is no fool and is suspicious of his story. Added to that the fact the imperial captain obviously recognised his description of the other imperial, the one that he inadvertently caused to drown.
The sounds of shouting and fighting coming from the tavern are initially a blessed distraction, that is until he recognises Auger’s voice. He turns along with the others to look at what is happening.
His instinct is to help Auger, but he knows if he does anything the charade would be over. Instead he trusts that Auger can handle himself, and that Varielky will be able to help.
“It looks like your attention is needed elsewhere right now constable”, he says motioning into the tavern.
“Someone may need your help as well”, he adds to the acolyte, “Best go with the constable, I’ll be ok for a few moments”.
He then waits to see what those around him do, whether the captain and her men still leave, and if the constable and the acolyte enter the tavern.
If he is left alone he will make to wander off around a corner out of sight, and if the acolyte stays he will motion for her to carry on leading him to some place quieter.
Auger strength roll: 3 -1= 2 on assailant's grapple attempt. (OOC: Just because it was not stated one way or the other - the attack and grapple attempts against Auger might have had disadvantage due to Fey Presence applying the Frightened condition.)
Shocked, utterly dismayed and not understanding how his words were making him the source of the attack, Auger is at a loss. Use of his powers would take this brawl beyond a basic bar fight and could be deadly. Nonetheless Auger was not without resources at hand.
Py, can you take this one grabbing me out? Make him dream.
Details
Py move: To a clear view of the man grappling Auger
Auger Action: Attack action but pass the request to Py to attack instead
Py reaction: Targeting the one holding Auger, attacks with Fey Dreamspell 8 +6 = 14. For 1 point of piercing damage, becoming visible from its position 40' up.
Fey Dreamspell. Ranged Spell Attack: +6 to hit, range 40/160 ft., one target. Hit: 1 piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or become poisoned for 1 minute. If its saving throw result is 5 or lower, the poisoned target falls unconscious for the same duration, or until it takes damage or another creature takes an action to shake it awake.
Auger move: If perchance Auger's grappler either somehow fails the original (disadvantaged?) grapple roll or is put to sleep, Auger will move to the door.

Varielky

Varielky

Persuasion: (15+8) = 23
Auger strength roll: 3 -1= 2 on assailant's grapple attempt. (OOC: Just because it was not stated one way or the other - the attack and grapple attempts against Auger might have had disadvantage due to Fey Presence applying the Frightened condition.)
Shocked, utterly dismayed and not understanding how his words were making him the source of the attack, Auger is at a loss. Use of his powers would take this brawl beyond a basic bar fight and could be deadly. Nonetheless Auger was not without resources at hand.
Py, can you take this one grabbing me out? Make him dream.
