Hi everyone! I'm Inferno! I'm recruiting for a homebrew campaign, set in the Forgotten Realms and loosely based on the campaigns Dragon of Icespire Peak, Storm Lord's Wrath, Sleeping Dragon's Wake, and Divine Contention. It should hopefully run from 5th to around 11th level. It follows a version of events were heroes never emerged in Northwest Faerûn, allowing the cult of Talos to complete its rituals, emerge victorious, and turn the Sword Coast into a flooded, stormy, and desolate wasteland. I've DMd a few games for my friends before, but I'm still relatively new both as a player and as DM and completely new to DMing a PbP game, so please have patience with me as we go through this campaign! I'm looking for six players for this campaign. More details about character creation will be included below
Background
More background will be provided in the opening post of the game, but to give you something to work with for your character backstories, here's a snapshot of what is going on. Since the victory of the Cult of Talos, the roiling, stormy ocean has flooded inland, decimating the city of Neverwinter and the town of Leilon in the process. The coast now lays at the border of the Neverwinter Woods and up to about where Phandalin is south of that, with the ocean now curving around the westernmost peaks of the Sword Mountains. The canyon running between the lower half of the Sword Mountains and the hills above is also now filled with water. The city of Phandalin lays in complete ruin, decimated by the now fully grown white dragon Cryovain, who rules an icy domain atop Icespire Peak (centermost peak of the northern ridge of the Sword Mountains). His relationship with the Cult of Talos is unclear, but the followers of the storm god certainly give him a wide berth. The Neverwinter woods are overrun by acolytes of Talos, and the area as a whole is tormented by the constant danger of the rampant water and air elementals that Talos has let loose on the realm. The forces of the Elemental Planes of Air and Water themselves are now felt here, and the damage caused by them is immeasurable. The whole region is coated in a constant storm, and the lighting and harsh winds are at their worst in the mountains around Mount Hotenow, now rendered uninhabitable by the extreme weather.
It is a terribly bleak situation for all of the races of Northwest Faerûn, as every major human settlement has been decimated, most wood elves have been driven out of the Neverwinter Woods, and many of the mountains and hills where dwarves and gnomes once thrived now are impossible to live comfortably in. The Air and Water Genasi are perhaps having the most fun, now being closer than ever to their ancestral planes, but even for them the destruction is far too much. Talos has been ruthlessly unforgiving and destructive, paying no regard in what he decimates to protecting his former cultists. As such, many of the human cultists of Talos were killed by the savage elements in the same numbers as everyone else, while those who survived and cultists of races more suited to the new conditions continue to serve him with complete devotion. While some brave heroes still live dangerous lives elsewhere, most settlement has moved to the southernmost areas of the region. Elves live mostly now in the Kryptgarden Forest, with small human and halfling settlements scattered both in the forest with the elves and in the plains below it. Dwarven and Gnome settlements span across the southern hills, the southern half of the Sword Mountains where they are far enough away from Cryovain to be safe, and in the Starmetal Hills. Most major authority structures have collapsed, and those of all races prefer to live is small, mobile bands that can avoid the rampaging dangers of the region, as even these safter areas are not completely secure. Talos himself cannot maintain a permanent physical presence in the Material Plane, but his influence is certainly felt here as destruction, storms, and danger wreak havoc on the region and its inhabitants. This is clearly the most dangerous time in the region's history to be an adventurer, so expect random encounters when traveling through the world of this campaign, as the world is in a state of destruction and chaos. There won't be too many as to significantly slow the game down, but explorers should certainly keep an eye out for danger when venturing beyond the more secure areas in the south.
Here's a map of the area (for this campaign's purposes a map of the area from before Talos's cult succeeded) so you can visualize the locations described here:
Rules A few basic rules for this campaign:
Keep things PG-13. Violence and bloodshed are inevitable in a DnD campaign like this one, but please keep away from any overly gory or sexual content
No racism, sexism, homophobia, ageism, etc. will be tolerated.
Only content from the Basic Rules, PHB, DMG, and Elemental Evil Player's Companion is allowed for creating your characters
Everyone involved in this campaign is expected to treat others with a basic level of respect. Remember that we are all here to have fun and our joint enjoyment should be a top priority.
All characters must be created on DnD Beyond and have a DnD beyond character sheet
A few homebrew rules, both to remove some unneeded complexity and to add some more of the flavor of the campaign
No encumbrance, most adventuring pace rules are ignored, and the PCs are assumed to always have enough food and water unless otherwise specified
All spells that require material components no longer do
GP and other forms of currency will for the most part be ignored, as there are no real shops in this world after all of the destruction. Gear will be earned through combat rather than bought
A Nat 1 always fails and a Nat 20 always succeed (in some way), regardless of other factors or modifiers
All characters will get 1 use of the Channel Divinity of the domain of their patron god per long rest (See below for more info on what this means) If that domain grants multiple, it is the one granted at the lowest level. For Channel Divinity that refers to a player's cleric level if they are not a cleric, use the level of their starting class. Any Clerics will get 2 uses of Channel Divinity and recharge 1 each short or long rest
Character Creation Because of the utter destruction Talos has wrought on the world, many other gods of the realm have come together to try and stop him. Although they cannot intervene directly, they have each chosen a champion to do so, blessing them with some of their power. Those champions are you! When creating your character, think about why your patron deity would want to stand in the way of Talos's domination of the world. Lawful Good deities might seek to restore previous systems of power and the rule of law, whereas Chaotic Good deities seek only to help people and end their suffering. A Lawful Evil deity might choose a champion in order to reign in the pure chaos of Talos's destruction, which they see as distasteful. Chaotic Neutral or Neutral Evil deities do so more for their own personal benefit, knowing that Talos having so much control is not good for them long-term or hoping to depose him so they could become dominant forces themselves. However, what exactly your god's motivation for joining this uneasy alliance of deities and choosing your character as a champion is is up to you! Here are the guidelines for character creation aside from the ones above:
Choose a god of the Forgotten Realms (found in Appendix B in the PHB) to be your patron deity. It can be a god of any alignment but Chaotic Evil and any domain but Tempest, including the Death domain. When building your character, think about why your god would have chosen you. 1-2 clerics in the party is to be expected, but I am not looking for a campaign of 6 clerics. You can serve a god in ways other than just being a cleric of their domain. Knowledge domain deities might want to pick a Wizard as their champion instead of just a cleric, Nature domain deities may go with a Ranger or Druid, etc. I will be accepting only one character representing a god of each available domain (Knowledge, Nature, Light, Life, Trickery, War, Death). For example, if multiple people apply with characters chosen by a Light deity, only one will be accepted. One domain will go unused
Characters start at Level 5 and have their base starting gear + their respective Channel Divinity as described in the homebrew rules and one uncommon magic item each that will be given to them at the start of the campaign
Characters should match the alignments of their deities. The only exception to this is that characters of Lawful Evil deities can also be Lawful Neutral, and characters of Neutral Evil deities can be True Neutral or Chaotic Neutral instead if they think that fits their character better
Ability Scores:4d6, drop lowest, no rerolls for 1s, do this twice and choose which one you want to use. If you like neither, use standard array
Hit Points: Max value of hit die + your Constitution Modifier for 1st level, 1 hit die (or the specified fixed value for that die) + your Constitution Modifier for each level after that. Once you choose to roll instead of using the fixed value, you must keep that roll. Fixed Values: d6 = 4, d8 = 5, d10 = 6, d12 = 7
All sources but Homebrew off, Milestone Advancement, Manual Hit Points, No Encumbrance, both prerequisites on
Feats are allowed, but no Multiclassing to start. Players wishing to spec into another class later in the campaign can do so if they feel it works well for the story and their character
Application Include your rolls for your ability spread in your post
Character Name: Patron God and their Domain: Alignment: Race: Class/Subclass: Character Backstory (before becoming your god's champion, 3-5 sentences): Why did your god choose you? Why are you (and by extension your god) choosing to join this alliance to oppose Talos?: As a player, what percentage of your enjoyment of DnD comes from combat vs roleplaying? How many times per day on average will you be able to post?: Character Sheet Link:
The characters selected will be transported to the Sigil, the City of Doors, located in the Outlands, a neutral location where they will meet with the other champions and all of their patron gods to set them forth on their quest to free the realm from Talos's destructive grasp. I'll be leaving this open for at least a couple of days, or until I've got a good number of applicants, at which point I'll DM people who I'd like to have join! Thanks for considering my campaign as an option for your next adventure and reading everything I've prepared for you here, and I can't wait to get down to telling a story together with a wonderful party of adventurers!
Character Name: Liri Whitefall Patron God and their Domain: Mielikki (Nature) Alignment: CG Race: Half-elf Class/Subclass: Druid (Circle of Moon)
Character Backstory (before becoming your god's champion, 3-5 sentences): Liri grew up in a small village nestled in the Neverwinter Woods that still followed the Old Faith and worshipped the gods of nature. From a young age, she loved spending time playing in nature and the nearby woods and soon developed a fascination with the nearby forest grove, maintained by a druid named Esvelle who occasionally acted as wise woman for the village. Recognising her connection with nature, Esvelle accepted Liri as an apprentice and trained her in the ways of the Old Faith and of Mielikki's worship, including, eventually, those of the Circle of the Moon. Liri's village and grove was consumed by the storm, Esvelle disappeared during the fighting against the cultists and elementals and Liri attempted to protect the villagers as they fled to safety.
Why did your god choose you? Why are you (and by extension your god) choosing to join this alliance to oppose Talos?: Liri proved herself to Mielikki while she was still apprenticed to Esvelle, risking her own safety to aid a unicorn that had become injured in the forest near the grove. Liri seeks to restore the balance of nature that has been so badly upset by the storms of Talos, and to protect the denizens of the forest (both humanoid and animal) from evil.
As a player, what percentage of your enjoyment of DnD comes from combat vs roleplaying? I enjoy both, but prefer roleplaying more - probably 60-70% roleplaying to 30-40% combat How many times per day on average will you be able to post?: Around twice a day most days - around lunchtime and then again in the evening (my timezone is UTC)
(I missed the part where only PHB and Elemental Evil sources were allowed. Or I read it, but didn't think about the Phantom subclass not being in those sources. I put the below together, but understand if it is not allowed due to Phantom not being in the sources allowed.)
Character Name: Xilbella Eagershine Patron God and their Domain: Sehanine Moonbow, (Grave Domain) Alignment: CG Race: High Elf Class/Subclass: Rogue (Phantom) Character Backstory (before becoming your god's champion, 3-5 sentences): Xilbella has always had a connection to the dead. From an early age she felt restless spirits, and wondered at what they were. Due to this she was brought into a temple to Sehanine Moonbow, where she trained these special gifts of hers. She eventually became a hunter of those who would try to cheat death, and a seeker of knowledge that might be lost if not safeguarded.
Why did your god choose you? Why are you (and by extension your god) choosing to join this alliance to oppose Talos?: Sehanine Moonbow, is a god of divination (among others), and of death. She has seen a world completely under the sway of the Storm Lord, but has also seen a small hope that might stop such a thing from being. Due to this she has summoned a hunter and skilled warrior, Xilbella, to send her to aid a small band of adventurers. The hope is small that they will prevail, but at least there is hope.
As a player, what percentage of your enjoyment of DnD comes from combat vs roleplaying? 50/50 How many times per day on average will you be able to post?: At least once, but often much more than that. Character Sheet Link: Link

Character Name: Colleen the Searcher Patron God and their Domain: Oghma, Knowledge Alignment: N Race: Variant Human Class/Subclass: Rogue(Arcane Trickster) Character Backstory (before becoming your god's champion, 3-5 sentences):
Colleen is the daughter of a priest of Oghma and a wizard, both respected scholars, more devoted to research than family. From a young age she was apprenticed to the scholar's at Candlekeep but her skills and inclinations turned to hunting down lost knowledge and bringing it back to the order. She was good enough at this that she gained real respect from her parents and the order.
Why did your god choose you? Why are you (and by extension your god) choosing to join this alliance to oppose Talos?:
Colleen rescued a lost book containing a ton of knowledge of Oghma's early churches. When she did so, the obook spoke to her and told her she was specifcally blessed and chosen by Oghma for her unique works, and he would reward her. She is joining this alliance in order to stop the potential destruction of lost knowledge throughout the area.
As a player, what percentage of your enjoyment of DnD comes from combat vs roleplaying? Depends on the game. PbP its generally 60% roleplay, 25% exploration/investigation, 15% combat.
How many times per day on average will you be able to post?: Once

Character Name: Jade Patron God and their Domain: Tempus, War Alignment: Chaotic Neutral Race: Earth Genasi Class/Subclass: Paladin - Oath of Vengeance Character Backstory (before becoming your god's champion, 3-5 sentences): Jade walks the hills and plains. She enjoys being on her own, as do most of her kind, walking the earth, being around those who need assistance when needed. She isn't fast to anger, she isn't fast to feel emotions in general, but will do what needs to be done. Righting wrongs as she feels is needed.
Why did your god choose you? Why are you (and by extension your god) choosing to join this alliance to oppose Talos?: As the elements of air and water take over the land, she feels a great need to bring back balance in any form necessary. As the white dragon has taken over the area she calls home, another fire lit... Tempus has felt that in her, that slow burn within the earth that fuels her passion and has directed her to join him in his domain of war.
As a player, what percentage of your enjoyment of DnD comes from combat vs roleplaying? both! I'd go with about 50/50, but looking forward to the tremulous world you have created. How many times per day on average will you be able to post?: several times throughout the day (a lot) - especially during the week. Character Sheet Link: https://www.dndbeyond.com/profile/kqstark/characters/68099356
Character Name: Lux Patron God and their Domain: Lanthander Alignment: NG Race: Human - Variant Class/Subclass: Cleric - Light Domain Character Backstory (before becoming your god's champion, 3-5 sentences):
As a baby, his village was attacked by a storm demon that wiped out everyone except him. When a retired paladin came through the village she started to bury the dead. Upon searching for bodies, she saw a glowing light from a fallen house. Under the wreckage she found a baby . To her surprise, the glow was coming form the child. Picking up the child she saw a red birthmark on his back of a rising sun. Realizing this was a sign from her god (Lanthander) she took the child and raised him to her last days. He then ventured to pass along mercy and justice.
Why did your god choose you? Lanthander saved him from childhood to serve others and fight evil
Why are you (and by extension your god) choosing to join this alliance to oppose Talos?: My whole life is about delivering mercy and fighting evil. That is why I was spared.
As a player, what percentage of your enjoyment of DnD comes from combat vs roleplaying? I enjoy both but probably 60% Combat/ 40% RP
How many times per day on average will you be able to post?: It'll vary depending on the day (Mon-Fri a bit more; Weekends a bit less). On average 4 times/day
Character Name: Osborn Havery Patron God and their Domain: Ilmater, Life Alignment: Lawful Good Race: Stout Halfling Class/Subclass: Cleric (life domain) Character Backstory: Osborn has a compulsion to heal people. He wanders from city to city helping anyone in need. After his village was destroyed in one of the many disasters he vowed to help whoever he can.
Why did your god choose you? One day Osborn saw that a group of bandits were about to kill someone. He payed the bandits all of his money to stop them from killing this person. The bandits let the person go, but one of this drew a bow to attack Osborn. He was shot and left for dead. Ilmater saw this act of selflessness and saved him and welcomed him back as a cleric.
Why are you (and by extension your god) choosing to join this alliance to oppose Talos?: As much as Osborn tries to help people, there always seems to be something new he has to fix. With Talos being the cause of most of these, he believes that it would be the best for everyone to oppose Talos. As a player, what percentage of your enjoyment of DnD comes from combat vs roleplaying? I like 30% combat and 70% roleplaying. How many times per day on average will you be able to post?: Multiple times, 2-3 at least. Character Sheet Link: https://ddb.ac/characters/68087741/cVS348
Hey everyone! I'm extremely happy to see so many people wanting to join my campaign. Just a reminder that for your characters only content from the Basic Rules, PHB, DMG, and the Elemental Evil Player's Companion is allowed. I'm seeing some posts with content (especially subclasses) not from those sources, so be sure to switch things up to follow that rule if you want to be considered!

Character Name: Keyleth Xiloama Patron God and their Domain: Leira, Trickery Alignment: CN Race: Half-Elf Class/Subclass: Rogue/Arcane Trickster Character Backstory (before becoming your god's champion, 3-5 sentences):
Keyleth's mother worked as a sort of spy for a sect of Leira, and left him to be raised by them as she had to travel a lot, visiting every year or so. Keyleth proved a quick study in much the same skill set as his mother, and so much more. He became a charlatan, a spy, a pick pocket, and after learning some of the illusion magic Leira's worshippers were known for, an infiltrator. And all that he did to aid the sect, and to live in Leira's image.
Why did your god choose you?: Keyleth is a loyal follower of Leira, dedicating himself to her since childhood. He is also talented in many skills associated with her. Why are you (and by extension your god) choosing to join this alliance to oppose Talos?: The stormy sea is troubling the island nation of Nimbral that holds a large amount of her followers. As a player, what percentage of your enjoyment of DnD comes from combat vs roleplaying?: About 50/50 How many times per day on average will you be able to post?: I guess I can post at least a couple times a day, but games don't usually go fast enough for that to be necessary. I can post on around 4-5 days of the week; I'm usually away from my computer on weekends. Character Sheet Link: https://ddb.ac/characters/68073367/vkIT5K
We will roll in-thread during the campaign for Max HP changes as the characters level up (assuming you chose to roll instead of taking the fixed value for that level), but since I didn't specify in my opening post, I won't require it. Feel free if you want to though!
I think I've finished everything on my application form and character sheet now - hopefully I did everything right as I haven't participated in a pbp here before. I wasn't sure what to do about the HP for levels 2-5, so I just picked the fixed value for those levels, but happy to roll it instead if required!

Your HP looks right, assuming you picked the fixed value instead of rolling for each level above first. There's been some confusion over how exactly starting HP is working so I've added an explanation of how starting HP works to the character creation section so that it is clearer for everyone who applies in the future. Sorry for the confusion everyone!

Character Name: Koric Blaine Domain: Knowledge (Mystra) Alignment: NG Race: Human (Variant) Class/Subclass: Wizard/Divination
Character Backstory (before becoming your god's champion, 3-5 sentences):
A scholarly wizard whose idea of 'delving' involved discovering dusty tomes more than it did dusty ruins, Koric was satisfied to live his life surrounded by the things he loved: Books. Then the world changed. His home, Candlekeep, was gone. His friends were gone, and so much ancient knowledge lost. Once he got over the outrage and the sense of impotence in the face of overwhelming destruction, he set about trying to do what he was good at: Recovering, restoring and preserving what had been lost. Only now it seemed to involve more of the other kind of delving.
Why did your god choose you?
This question still baffles Koric, he'd like to believe that it was because of his service and dedication to knowledge and to understanding the world, but in his view, Mystra needs warriors, not sages. In his darker moments he thinks that if only parts of the world are to be saved, then someone needs to understand what is important to save and determine what ... can be lost. Only by understanding the world, both as it is and as it was, would the path forward become clear; so perhaps his perspective and skill as a scholar meant that he was uniquely suited to play a part after all.
As a player, what percentage of your enjoyment of DnD comes from combat vs roleplaying? 67% RP, 33% Combat How many times per day on average will you be able to post?: more than 1; mostly less than 5 ;-) Character Sheet Link:Here

Why did your god choose you? Why are you (and by extension your god) choosing to join this alliance to oppose Talos?:
Sehanine Moonbow, is a god of divination (among others), and of death.

Patron God and their Domain: Tempus, War
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Race: Earth Genasi
Class/Subclass: Paladin - Oath of Vengeance
Character Backstory (before becoming your god's champion, 3-5 sentences): Jade walks the hills and plains.

D&D since 1984
Character Name: Osborn Havery
Patron God and their Domain: Ilmater, Life
Alignment: Lawful Good
Race: Stout Halfling
Class/Subclass: Cleric (life domain)
Character Backstory: Osborn has a compulsion to heal people.

Can I keep my ability scores, as I missed this and it will trash my whole character?
Coriana - Company of the Grey Chain
Wagner - Dragon Heist: Bards.
DM - The Old Keep
Mhm! You can keep the same ability scores
Oh, if hitpoints are manual do we roll here?

Character Name: Keyleth Xiloama
Patron God and their Domain: Leira, Trickery
Alignment: CN
Race: Half-Elf
Class/Subclass: Rogue/Arcane Trickster
Character Backstory (before becoming your god's champion, 3-5 sentences):
As a player, what percentage of your enjoyment of DnD comes from combat vs roleplaying?: About 50/50
How many times per day on average will you be able to post?: I guess I can post at least a couple times a day, but games don't usually go fast enough for that to be necessary. I can post on around 4-5 days of the week; I'm usually away from my computer on weekends.

Ability scores: 13 13 15 18 15 15
Character Name: Koric Blaine
Domain: Knowledge (Mystra)
Alignment: NG
Race: Human (Variant)
Class/Subclass: Wizard/Divination
67% RP, 33% Combat
How many times per day on average will you be able to post?: more than 1; mostly less than 5 ;-)
