Jade thanks Elantra for helping her up and starts heading towards the staircase wondering what the sound was that she created.. hoping it wasn’t too bad. But as Dazlyn calls down, she flat out runs up the stairs thinking a portal that worked probably isn’t a good thing.
Liri will follow the others up the stairs. Somewhat hesitantly she says, "I'm not sure I like the idea of a working portal in a death cult stronghold, former or otherwise. Especially given all these dragon bones. Doesn't seem like it's going to be anything good.
Jade, do you need any healing? That was a nasty looking fall you took back there..."
Elandra sighs at Dazlyn's comment. "Champions of the divine, fixing your broken magical wares by accident." She follows the troupe back up stairs muttering under her breath that however this get a told in the future, there needs to be far more gravitas to the reforming of the portal.
Walking back upstairs, you see the portal fully reassembled in the middle of the room, a glowing dark blue light filling the ring of the now entirely repaired portal. Around it, dust and other debris are being sucked into the portal with a decent amount of force, although not enough to pull you all in from where you are at the moment. It does seem to be perfectly operational though... and perhaps its twin, wherever in the world that might be located, might be as well
Koric cautiously follows the last person out of the room and ascends the stairs. He stops in the doorway ans stairs at the reconstructed portal. "They were trying to stop Talos, so perhaps the will be allies?" he looks around nervously at his companions, "The enemy of my enemy and all."
He moves a short distance back down the corridor and out of sight of the portal, crouches down and closes his eye then links senses with Balthar. He sends the owl in a wide circle around the portal, also looking through the magical circle from both sides if possible.
The portal seems entirely obscure, and you are unable to peer through it. Kirov, balthar flies around and takes a lap around the portal, keeping a wide birth, but you can certainly feel him being pulled in a bit by the portal, even if the pull isn’t very strong
Jade looks at Koric, "I'm sorry, but I think the most sensible route is to send your owl through. That way you can see what he sees and let us know what in the world we might have here?"
Koric snorts at Jade's words, "Well, I'd as soon gather as much as I can about the portal before I risk inflicting suffering or death on my faithful friend, thank you very much. It may seem like just an animal to you, but he's a thinking and feeling creature that should not be treated callously."
He stands up and stares at the portal, "Besides, if we can't see through the portal then the magic the connects us will likely break and I will see nothing, and -- despite your words -- Balthar is just an owl. He can't tell me diddly squat, just a few images and emotions when he gets back, if I can not link my mind with his."
Koric stands well clear of the portal and throws a stone at it; if the stone disappears he then takes a plank from one of the old tables and pokes it though part way and pulls it back, inspecting the end.
The stone vanishes right through the portal, and you hear no sound come through from the other side. You then go to dip a nearby wooden plank into the portal, and while it exibits a pretty strong pull on the object, you don't have any real trouble pulling it back out. The plank is still entirely intact and doesn't seem damaged, although the parts of it that went through the portal to appear to be quite soaked
Koric's gaze lingers on the wet plank, then he looks up at Lux's words. "Well, now that I know he won't be incinerated, I'm happy to ask Balthar to explore further. He is fast and small and may attract less notice than one of us."
Crouching down, he closes his eyes and joins his senses with Balthar and asks him to fly through the portal, instructing him to do a very quick circle then return.
Send Balthar through, watching and listening with him. If he loses contact, and he does not return in one round, wait one more round then dismiss and resummon him. If he can see through Balthar's eyes he may tell him to stay there and give him further instructions depending on what he sees. Koric will narrate what he sees as he sees it.
Balthar flies through the portal, and as he disappears from the party’s view, you tap into his senses. You immediately see that he’s been transported into the middle of what appears to be a rather large body of water. Looking down, you see what appears to be a swamp drowned below the water’s surface. Unable to swim, balthar struggles for a bit and then your connection severs, causing you to dismiss and resummon him. He looks visibly shaken from the experience, sticking tight to your shoulder
As Jade notices how shaken Balthar is after the experience, she learns a bit more about a familiar and has the grace to look a bit abashed for her earlier sentiment of just sending the owl through.
She doesn't look at Koric as she mumbles, "Doesn't look like this is a way we want to go. Did we want to keep it open or should I head back down and put the lever back?"
Koric caresses Balthar, trying to gently remove any residual water, then nods to Jade and smiles briefly, "No need to rush when we can smell the flowers, eh? I was hoping that we would find the cultists...they might be allies under the circumstances...but inless we can find a boat, I'm not sure it will help us much."
"Perhaps we should check back in the room above, and if it is unchanged pull the lever again, then explore elsewhere in the castle?" he looks around at his companions to see if they are willing to move on.
(( @DM: I can't recall the design well enough -- there was at least one other unexplored direction, right? ))

Can we see anything through the ring (aka the other side of the wormhole?)
