The door is unlocked and the handle turns easily in your hand, Peeking through the door, you see a large and irregularly shaped crumbling chamber with a large pit in the center and a metallic cage against the southern wall. The room is covered with crudely executed symbols and glyphs, scribed in a bright green dye.
The sound of soft whimpering can be heard coming from somewhere in the room.
Summary and Action
Bree has cracked open the door and glanced inside - what you've got above is what a stealthy peek unveils.
@Bree feel free to give me a perception or investigation check (perception to gather general info on the room, investigation to probe one part in particular)
Everyone else - give me a marching order in the hallway please and any actions you might take as Bree opens the door at the end of the hallway
"SomeONE is crying? We could try talking to them. I doubt it's who we're looking for, but maybe someone else got lost in here." She waits to get close to the door in case the others want her to do the talking.
Rantel sees nothing behind them, and Bree learns nothing new from her brief glance in the room.
Summary and Action
You have an open door in front of you and a room with green glyphs crudely painted on the walls and floor, a metal cage on the southern wall and the sound of someone (or something) whimpering.
Bree is at the door, Jane and Hogshead are crowding closely behind, Zerexius, Drax and Rantel covering the rear
The cautious halfling is having a hard time making out any details, but even her furtive glance reveal that the cage is empty - in fact it looks as if someone, or something, tore its way off the cage. One side of the cage has been wrecked, iron bars pulled loose from the floor and ceiling, others bend and twisted to make room for whatever was being held inside.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Rantel takes a look at the glyphs and runes to see if he can make any sense of him. "Can't abide by graffiti. At least, poorly-done graffiti. Some of the kids these days have some real talent..."
Rantel immediately sees that the glyphs are a single phrase repeated over and over again. He also recognized the language as Draconic - which Zerxius is be able to read and helps him decipher.
'Here There Be Dragons' - written over and over and over again in triumphant tones and strokes. More celebratory than a warning - or at least that's your best interpretation of the phrasing and styling of the glyphs.
You spot no signs of any traps or immediate danger.
The pit in the center of the room holds ashes from a recent fire.
Rantel's keen eyes confirm that the cage is utterly destroyed - whatever pushed its way out was incredibly strong and made short work of the thick iron bars.
A small wooden bench draped with green cloth is next to the cage, and several small objects rest on it. A bedroll lies near the wooden bench, and the sound of whimpering seems to be coming from inside it.
(a 24 Arcana and 23 Investigation should count for something)
Rantel mutters to the others, especially Zerxius, what he's gleaned about the runes. Then, he wordlessly points at the bedroll and motions everyone to prepare. He kneels down next to it and says, "Hello. Can you tell us what happened in here? Let's stay nice and calm. Deep breath in, deep breath out. Easy now."
The whimpering stops and is replaced by something closer to a soul-shaking sob. A small snout peeks its way out from the bedroll, two eyes glinting in the darkness of the blanket behind it.
'We lost 'im. They stole 'im and took 'im from us and now 'es gone and Meepo is here and everyone hates Meepo.'
The words come out in a rush, great gasps of air and bubbles of snot interrupted by wails of sorrow. Clearly this small creature is shaken by whatever happened here.
"Well that's nonsense. Not everyone. Not me. I don't hate Meepo. I'm Rantel. These are my friends. You can come on out, we're not going to hurt you unless you hurt us. Are you hungry? Thirsty? I don't have much but here's a bite and a sip. Why don't you tell me more about what happened here? You lost who? Big thing if it broke out of that cage. Who stole him? Some group your old friends don't like?"Rantel says, pulling out some bites of jerky and biscuit and nuts, and filling a small cup from his canteen. He's not the most likeable person in the world but it's clear this is not his first time speaking with someone who's been through some trauma. He's trying to calm Meepo down and also get information, and his patter is comforting, rolling over Meepo like a cool breeze you don't notice at first, in fits and starts, pausing for long periods when he senses that the little one needs a breath.
Meepo slowly emerges from the bedroll, the smallish kobold peeking out from under the ratty flea ridden blanket and looking around at the party of armed and armored adventuers with something just short of panic in his eyes.
'They took 'im. They took the clan’s dragon … we lost it. The wretched goblins stole Calcryx, our dragon! They came and they beat Meepo and they stole 'im and now he's gone and everyone 'ates Meepo.'
At this last bit, he looks down at the floor. Tears welling in his big reptilian eyes.

After peeking inside, Bree whispers over her shoulder," Lots of symbols on the floor and walls and stuff. And I think someone's inside crying."
Turning back to the doorway, she slowly leans inside and takes a cursory glance over the room.
"Spell or warning i wonder?

(Does this seem like a kobold to Rantel?)

Rantel recognizes Meepo as a smaller-than-average kobold. Give me a Persuasion roll - with advantage - nice use of the food and patter!
