Eric, you notice the sun rising in the east. Somehow Kriv is startled by it. You don't see any tracks or something like that, best you can tell the rearguard didn't move this way at least. No more howls from the west. From the south a gust of wind fills your nose with a typical smell. You've smelled something like this before. And it's gone. Roll a History check if you try to remember what is was.
In your mind you see a roaring fire. Flames twist like serpents in all directions, smoking, dancing like reeds in a river. The sickening stench of burning humanoid flesh, surprisingly sweet is what you smell.
Eric pauses inhaling the air around, then he darkens his face like he has foreseen something awful or and awful memory had come to possess his mind. Then he turns back to the others "You said there is no fire, but there must be a lot one nearby southward; and I smell death along with it" he stops and looks southward again "I think we should turn southward to take a careful look. something bad must have happened there" he turns again toward the others "what's your feeling about it? maybe we could speed up to Greenest instead; but I don't want to leave behind something that could hunt us without knowing what's going on down there"
((Eric with a nat 20 your guess would be that the smell comes from the raider's camp. Getting back there is possible, but you'll have to take a level of exhaustion))
occ: Ok, then Eric is less sure about going backward (I thought we were moving east-west with smell coming from another spot) maybe speeding up to Greenest may be a more valuable option then. But I'll wait to see what the others would like to do
Zale perception: 4 (...everyone has cursed perception but Eric lol. Good thing we have him or we would all be lost.)
"You say Anne's group be in trouble?" Zale replies, "While I still feel guilty for killing her husband, I don't think backtracking be the best idea. If something is happening there, it will likely be over by the time we make it back. We need to get back to Greenest, let them know what we found at the camp, and make sure that the Kobolds got the monk and the prisoners back in one piece."
"Yes it's right, we should go, I believe that a group of those cultist may have attacked the mercenaries, as retaliation, for their leaving... they don't seem to have left the camp... friendly"
As you are talking and walking: Eric you notice that a patch of ground is a bit different. A wide swath of grass seems to be more trampled down than the grass that surrounds it. Zale and Kriv are walking right to it. Calvin seems a bit lost in thoughts and is trailing behind you.
After Eric brings this to her attention. Zale will stop and investigate the area.
Investigation: 6
(And finds absolutely nothing lol)
Let's see if you react fast enough. Because Eric had to get close to see it and you're walking in front of him. Make a Acrobatics or Athletics check (don't worry the DC isn't super high)
Perception check: 18 + 4 if guidance allowed
occ: please guys don't try to spot anything anymore LOL It's like driving blind people around LOL

“The nasty guy who killed Telurion told them to leave. I don’t think the cult would kick them out and then chase and kill them.”
"Ya never know," Zale replies to Kriv, "Could be that those Mercs know to much about the Cult."

Eric inform the other about what he noticed... does the swath form a clear path or any particular pattern?

Kriv pays no attention either way and walks straight through the area.
It seems to be a 10 ft square.

((Thank you!))
The grass gives way and you fall in a 10 ft deep pit. Make an Athletics check to see if you have to take fall dmg.

Athletics: 15
Eric stops "Wait! The heart has been shoveled, it could be a pit trap!" Eric yells while looking Kriv walking recklessly thorough to area
