Zale grins when Khessa and Eric are able to identify the dagger. Heh, this one's better than the last dagger she came across! Stashing it in her belt, she visually examines the chest. After explaining what she's found to the group, she stands there rubbing her chin.
"Another acid trap do be a likely thing. I don't be sure if we can disarm this one by simply cuttin them strings either."
Moving closer, she tries to get a better look at the ceiling, trying to see if she can get an idea of what the strings are attached to without touching them, she's also looking to see if whatever they are attached to can be accessed by some sort of trap door in the ceiling. If there is acid up there, someone had to get it in there somehow. Then she tries to examine the mechanism closer as well. Where is the mechanism attached to the chest? I'm guessing it's on the lid, but i don't want to assume. Either way, does it look like she can detach it from the chest without moving the strings to much?
The niches in the ceiling contain 6 clay pots. You can't see what inside them. You assume that if the chest is moved or not opened properly, the clay pots will drop from the ceiling. Zale would have seen this mechanism before. She should know that any change in tension on the strings will cause the pots to fall. Instead of figuring out how to open the hasp properly it would be easier to lock the main string in place with her thieves' tools.
Khessa allows her beloved dwarf to pull her back... Zale probably knows what to do to neutralize the trap while she, by remaining there, is unable to provide any concrete advantage.
"Thank you for your concern, Eric" she turns her blue eyes to the cleric, once safe, smiling at him.
Kriv exits back to the chamber where their previous fight took place. He drops to a knee and examines the stairs for tracks, hoping to find some indication of the next move for the group to make.

Survival: 20
Following the stairs back to the misty room (with the ledge and crane) you notice 2 other paths:
Looking around you notice, despite the fog, that there are only humanoid footprints leading to the northwest path, no Bullywug or Frog tracks.
If Zale shows Khessa the Spellbooks, she opens her blue eyes wide in delight and surprise, impulsively hugs the dragonborn, then opens them, reverently, trying to get an idea, at least, of what spells are contained therein .
"Are they books that Azbara Jos was forced to abandon here in his haste to escape?" the blonde arcane warrior wonders "Pharblex didn't seem like the type to own Spellbooks... Nor Borngrey, who seemed to me to be an Eldritch Knight - a warrior who specializes in a very limited number of spells, permanently committing them to memory, without noting them in a Spellbook".
Zale stows the potion in her pack, and then picks up the two spellbooks turning to Khessa and holding them out to her. The rouge knows full well that those things are useless in her hands, and Khessa will be overjoyed to have them. Her thoughts are proven fact when the tall woman suddenly hugs the smaller dragonborn. She didn't even have time to process that motion before Khessa starts opening the manuscripts.
"Uh... I don't be knowin the answers to that." She says after she's collected herself, "Perhaps we should be headin back where Kriv went yeah? We don't really have the time for dilly dallyin right now. Especially with our guide dead." With that, she follows Kriv back out to the battle room.
Khessa's eyes widen in awe as she realizes the incredible amount of arcane knowledge those tomes hold: "Some of these spells are so powerful that I struggle just to grasp the full extent of what they do! Studying them to gradually assimilate their secrets will be a life-long pleasure for me!"
"But you are right, my dear friend" the blonde arcane warrior sighs, storing the times in her backpack with reverential care "First things first. Let's secure the Castle. Kriv went upstairs, you say? Let's join him! The enemies should be almost all beaten by now, but better be safe than sorry".
The tall adventuress leads the party to Kriv - and if he explains what he discovered she advises to follow the path with human tracks, keeping Anator to scout ahead, to minimize surprises.
Scouting ahead, Anator finds a room where mist from "the misty room" seeps into and keeps it filled to a depth of two to three feet. Aside from the mist, the chamber appears empty.
Khessa proudly strokes Anator's little head as she tells her companions what her brother has discovered. She concludes: "Shall we examine the room with our own eyes? If the tracks led there, there must be a way out... Perhaps by searching together we can locate it".

Eric steps backward, away from the clays range, whistling.... He encourages Khessa in doing the same by gently pulling her back...

Giving a small smirk when she realizes exactly what this mechanism is, the rouge pulls out her thieves tools and gets to work.

Once finished, she opens the chest and looks inside.
Well, that was easy enough! Inside Zale finds:

Kriv informs the group of the human tracks. “Probably a hidden door.” He readies the Fist and begins heading into the northwest chamber.
Khessa of course follows, ready in case of troubles.
