Khessa felt it, that it had been a murder; yet when Calvin speaks the revealing word aloud, it seems to hit her like a mallet, startling her for a moment.
However, the blonde arcane warrior is quick to recover: 'I owe it to Werond...' she thinks 'We need to put a stop to the arrogance of those who killed her. They must learn that they are not omnipotent. They can't do what they want when they want'.
The tall adventuress examines those present one by one with her blue eyes: "A murder with poison is a very serious thing... It's not nice to travel through dangerous land, while we know that someone feels authorized to kill at will thinking they can get away with it. We need to discover this vile poisoner and make sure they can't do it again. A poison, in order to act, it must be administered. So the killer must have approached Werond... Does anyone remember who approached this woman yesterday? Especially if it was someone who usually didn't approach her?"
Khessa also whispers to the druid: "Calvin, my friend, you were great... But there is maybe one more thing you can do! By chance... I don't know natural magic perfectly, but... that time we talked about it on the boat... You also mentioned..." she checks her numerous notes on her spellbook with its characteristic spider-web-like cover "Yes, here, you mentioned to me a [spell]Detect Poison and Disease;spell that allowed to find poisons[/spell]... Maybe, if you could use it, we could find out who in the caravan has the poison... And if we find someone (and only him) who has the same poison that killed Werond... I'd call this an irrefutable proof!"

(sorry but I had a couple of very hard days... Eric check would have been 24 but I don't think it matters anymore)
"Indeed my friend. What a vile weapon to kill someone" murmurs the dwarf "fortunately, there are spells that can provide us protection. I'll prepare them tonight" He instruct the others, speaking at low voice "as precaution, from now on we should gather together to consume our food and drinks, and before that you'll pass all of them under my eyes for being checked and eventually purified"
With Eric (and probably Calvin) detecting poison the party gets to know that the poison used is actually pretty common. Nothing in your food, but all Cult wagons have the type of poison used in the murder (among others). There's an Elf that trades in potions and poison that has it. And there are few mercs with a small amount of poison.
The party faces a dilemma. On the one hand, they cannot let Werond's murder go unpunished. On the other hand, they cannot accuse an individual, there are no witnesses who saw anything. You are convinced that the Cult or at least one of its members is responsible. But how to handle this without jeopardizing the mission?
Calvin addresses the gathered group, his voice filled with a mix of frustration and determination. "Considering the ubiquity of this poison, tracing it back to the culprit is going to be an insurmountable challenge," he begins, his words carrying a hint of disappointment. "But if we can't follow that trail, we must focus on uncovering the motive behind this heinous act. It is through the motive that we shall find a list of suspects – those who harbored a desire to see Werond's life extinguished."
Calvin pauses to let his words sink in. The weight of the investigation bears down upon them all. Calvin's mind races, contemplating the various possibilities that could have motivated someone to commit such a grave deed. Was it a personal vendetta, a hidden secret, or a clash of interests? The answers lie buried within the intricate web of human emotions, waiting to be unraveled.
Calvin takes a deep breath, summoning his resolve to navigate through the murky depths of human nature. He understands the significance of unraveling the motive – it is the key that will unlock the door to justice and bring closure to the victim's memory.
With steely determination etched across his face, Calvin addresses the group once more. "We must delve into the depths of Werond's life, searching for any semblance of motive, any hidden tensions or grievances. It is through meticulous investigation and unwavering focus that we will shed light on the dark corners of this mystery, ultimately revealing the person who held the twisted desire to see Werond's demise."

"Calvin..." Khessa points out to the druid "Yesterday the cultists shooed Werond away in a rude way, when she came to help them... And, although I admit that I did not expect the poison to be so widespread in this caravan (will it perhaps be part of the commercial strategies with which the traders of Baldur's Gate try to prevail over the competition?) however the cultist wagon is the one that is best supplied with it - probably even more than that merchant who is supposed to sell it for a living".
"It seems pretty clear to me," the blonde arcane warrior concludes, "that it was the cultists who killed her. They must have feared she might have seen something when she approached and thought they'd silence her forever. The difficulty is, since that not only they have the poison and, it seems, no one has seen them approach Werond, we do not have enough proof to denounce them in front of the whole caravan".
“So, either we do justice privately, planning to hit some of them while they're isolated…” the tall adventuress ponders “…Or we try to get the evidence we need, urging them to try to kill again. I could feign being scared by the death of Werond and start spreading the rumor that she had told me something she had seen, before she was killed… I could tell this story to various merchants, purposely letting the cultists see me doing so… If the cultists get suspicious, they might decide to try to kill me too... But if if they approached me during the night, Anator would see them - even if they were invisible or hidden - so we could catch them in the act! They would have a hard time explaining to the caravan why they were coming to visit me, at night, stealthily, with poison... We could then probably arrest - or kill - the poisoners with the caravan's blessing; the cult would lose some member, at least".
"Or maybe Zale would be an even better decoy, if she feels like it..." Khessa thinks again "I'm not very good at bluffing... Zale, on the other hand, is very good at this... and the cultists don't like her already - it's pretty easy that they could come to the decision to kill her. But I could have Anator watch her at night... and the rest is as already said: we catch them in the act and report them or execute them on the spot".
(Ooof I missed a looooot. Also, I forgot to answer on the PMs, Zale actually doesn't have proficiency with shortbows, so she's probably not the best fit for the +1 bow.)
A bit late to the party, Zale runs over to her companions as soon as she hears about the incident. "Poison ye say? Eye, that do be serious. I don't have the slightest clue as to why this one would have been targeted....." She pauses for a moment, "Unless 'o course they be tryin to set up a false trail. Kill off some random folks so their actual target be less obvious, and to hide motive."
"I be fine with bein a decoy. Like ye said, they already be watchin me. No reason to make 'em wanna kill you as well." She grins, "Though I doubt I'll have to do much lyin' to gett'em to wanna kill me." Then her grin fades back to a serious expression. "Though yer plan with Anator be flawed. Keepin a watch at night won't stop poison. Unless it by by a poisoned weopon o course. If these folks follow the same action as they did with this one, we best be makin our own meals. Though I'd also recommend not announcing that we found the source of this poor woman's death. Right now, we know what to watch out for. If we go tellin the camp someone's poisonin people, the killer will either lay low for a while, or change strategies."She glances towards the cult, "And I don't be thinkin makin the caravan mad at them cultist be a wise idea. We are here to follow them ain't we? Sendin 'em away won't help us with that."
"How's about I just start actin mad at 'em? Maybe pretend I never received me dagger back. Or start complainin that they be watchin me. I might make the caravan question me sanity, but it would sure make them cultists wanna get me out o their hair." She pauses, "I'm up for other ideas though....and I'd be likin some backup close at hand and readily available if things go south."
"Well, flaw..." Khessa ponders "I suppose that, if we cook our own food, they need to come near anyway, to poison it. But you have a point with the risk that the caravan will then send them away if we prove them guilty. Maybe we'll have, once again, to simply defer punishment. But when time comes... how hard they will fall!"
"There is no reason to consume just our food" says the dwarf "I can clean the food from any poison by the use of magic. Just avoid consuming food and drinks before I inspect them myself" the dwarf mumbles "also if they notice we are able to clear the poison they might be forced to have more direct approach, making easier to discover their intrigues" after a brief pause of thought he says again "So I would say we won't accuse them publicly, but showing myself clearing the food and water we drink, we'll send a message to them that we know what they have done, I believe they'll change strategy, and we'll be ready for that"
“I can make clean water if we need it too.” Kriv takes a drink from his water skin. “Or I can always just break their limbs. Hard to poison us that way.”
Calvin gives a resolute nod as he acknowledges Kriv's words. "Indeed, I possess the power to purify food and drink as well," he affirms, his voice tinged with a sense of determination. "With our combined abilities, we can take every precaution necessary to safeguard ourselves against the threat of poison."

Zale nods to Eric, "That be a good plan for starters. Let's start with that, then if it don't get their attention, then we can move to a more obvious approach."
In that case, the caravan will continue after noon. There was a simple funeral for Werond. The Hoper has pledged to ensure that her Earthly possessions reach her family. He has also marked the grave on a map and collected her wages to date from her employer. You are sure that he will add a considerable sum of money himself.
At dinner you have another moment to come together.
Zeminny will speak candidly to Kriv and Zale and say, “ what if we were to just kill off these sum beetch nut cultists? Maybe we could ensure they partake in some ‘spoiled’ food or happen to fall into a nest of snakes….I really hate these folks, and I really hate to have to hate people”
At dinner Eric takes care to make evident he is casting Detect Poison and Disease (and eventually Purify) as rituals. He writes runes on the tables, under the dishes they use to eat and pronounces dwarfish preys. Tiny sparkles, that fades easily, arises from the food and water, from a certain distance, it appears that the group is eating their meal surrounded by fireflies, while the dusk is falling.
Khessa is happy that the plan calls for her and her companions to eat together - so she can enjoy Eric's pleasant company, at least at meals!
The blonde arcane warrior is eager both to take notes about those interesting rituals and to exchange, first of all with the dwarf cleric, but also with the others, impressions on how the day went. She tends to be curious and cheerful as usual - but she always keeps Anator hidden in her thick hair with the task of telepathically warning her in the in case something or someone unusual approaches.
