”Hmm, it does seem too far,” says Logan, looking down the hole. He peers at the walls of the hole to see if there are any good handholds for a potentially perilous climb down.

Using the other torch, Logan manages to see some small steps and handholds that can be used to climb down or up. Probably carved in case the mechanism weren't operative or even before it was installed. They start about fifteen feet below though, and the warrior notices that the previsible candence of step and handhold has been broken in those last fifteen feet before reaching the surface. As if someone had smashed the steps to break them. He also notices that the handholds and the steps were carved for dwarven people, so perhaps they are not really comfortable using them but they can definetly try them to reach the bottom.
"Interesting" says Thandril "All seems to indicate that they left in a hurry and didn't want anything to come up. I wonder what it could be but... it seems abandoned now right? " he asks to the others " Probably they were attacked by orcs or goblins and had to leave the mines. And they tried to shut it down so they cannot follow. Once the dwarves were gone.. well it seems thatt their attackers lost interest in this place. And for the mining tools, I do hope to find some down there... " he says to Gorm and he turns to the eagle on his shoulder "No, I didn't plan for it and I doubt that they got picks and mining gear in an inn you smart bird..."
”Let’s use the wooden beams and knot my rope so it gets us to the start of the intact steps,” says Logan, starting to knot his rope. Looking down to the torch far below, he says to Gorm, “We may need your rope further below when the opening expands.”

"With your armor you are probably the heaviest of us. Would it be more prudent for me to go first to test the way?" Gorm asks. "I'm probably a bit more agile as well..." There is an argument to be made for the most armored to go first as well though so Gorm will concede to whatever Logan decides best.
Thinking about it for a moment, Logan says, “You are right, Gorm, and we will need you and your rope in the lead as the hole opens up below. Please proceed.”

"Oh... um... Sure," Gorm says, suddenly realizing just how far the bottom is and wondering why she volunteered. Making sure the first rope is tied tightly Gorm will then carefully begin her climb down.
((Ok, you need to roll an Athletics check, with advantage thanks to the rope dif 12. If you fail, you slip and you can make an DEX or STR ST dif 12, your choice, and again with advantage thanks to the rope. However any result of a nat 1 on that ST will break the rope and it cannot be used again. For example, you slip and roll a 15 and a 1 on the ST, you manage to get a hold into step, but the rope breaks in the process. If you roll a 8 and a nat 1 on that save... well, that's no good.
This will take us to first steps. No roll is needed to descend even if it is umcomfortable but the steps are sturdy and well crafted. Once you reach the bottom you still have a 20 ft fall with no walls or steps around. How they manage that gap would you ask. Well at the bottom of the walls you'll find a couple of metal rings on the wall and a pulley that seems to had had some kind of elevator, probably a wooden plank tied at the edges. But now you can tie your own rope and descend the last 20 ft using it. for that it would be necessary anohter athletics check dif 12. If you fail this one you fall. Theres nothing to hold into this time.. How far I fall? well that depends.
roll: 1-4 : 20 ft. 5 - 9 - 15 ft 10 - 10 ft. 11 - 5 ft.
Now with a few more questions we are good to go. Grom goes first. But what about the others? marching order? Please include Thandril on this he is happy to go in any order. How much distance between each member do you leae?
With that two things sorted out, feel free to roll and desribe how do your characters do descending the chasm.
Allowing Gorm to go first, Logan follows once she is on the steps and well clear of where he might knock her off if he fails badly. He starts down the rope

“Ahbut it’s all right fro those Tarzan types but me I’m more of the George of the Jungle ilk and with a dodgy knee to boot!” Dr A mutters to himself as he attempts to clamber down.
Gorm isn’t a figure of confidence but she shows no fear either. She boldly climbs down the rope and to the steps, then carefully down them. She pauses a bit before the final rope climb down and is probably a bit more careful then she needs be, not wanting to screw up at the final step of the journey.
Once down she takes a w quick scan of the area to ensure there is no lurking dangers, be it beast or badly placed rubble or otherwise. Once that is done she turns her attention to the others climbing down, knowing she can’t help but anxious none the less.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Dr A is nowhere near as skilled and as fast as either Gorm or Logan in making the descent as he tests each and every step at least twice. But eventually he reaches the final platform and (Athletics roll = 10) (OOC perfect ‘20’ ) he clambers down the last part surprising himself at how easy it was!
The elf is the last one of them to climb down but nimble as the elves are, he doesn’t have any trouble.
Once they all are down they start to pay more attention to their surroundings. Logan retrieved the torch from inside a small metal cart that were used to carry ore and minerals. Just in the area of the hole there is a lot of metal and wood debris, the remains of the platform and chain that were attached to it, along with the mechanisms used to raise and lower it. All were three down the hole and destroyed in the fall.
They are in a circular chamber, 20 feet or more wider that the hole and about 10 feet tall. Several corridors, most of them with rails for the carts, start from this chamber like spokes of a wheel at even feet away one from another. There are seven of them, four are totally collapsed and would need digging to see if they are practicable or not. At the place were an eight corridor should be there is an old wooden table, and a tool rack with several picks and shovels on it and some more scattered around in the floor. The corridors that are not collapsed are the ones at the east, south east and south directions. The table is on the north side of the circle. As the party begins to inspect the chamber they hear one sound from the southern passage.
Click. Click. Click click
Thandril whispers “I have a bad feeling about this”
Tossing the torch onto the ground in the direction of the clicking sound, Logan readies his shield and draws his longsword. Taking a few steps forward to put himself between Doctor A. and any incoming threat he peers into the torchlight ahead, trying to see what might be coming for them down the hall. "I think we may be close to finding out what the dwarves were so tight-lipped about," he says with a touch of worry in his voice.

The chittering noise intensifies, if not in cadence in volume. To the waiting warriors it seems as if someone is having a conversation with himself. Gorm sees it before her friend, but Logan doesn't takes too much longer to be able to discern it in the dim light of their torch.
The shadow of an insectoid figure looms in the walls before they can really see it. Long, quitinose legs, ended in pointy and sharp claws, raise as high as a horse. The creature has a long neck, which moves from one side to the other while making the clittering noise with its jaws foll of long, dangerous teeth. It stops when it barely reaches the circle of light, and looks directly to Gorm and Logan.
It snarls and growls and launches itself forward!
