The crowd applauds Vins speech, wowed by the tale of hokum's rescue, though there are many faces of concern and outright worry at the mention of the creatures faced.
Judge Tibus steps forward and pats Vin on the back, not saying anything directly to the boy as the tortle's voice is still amplified, he raises Vin's hand skyward as a sign of victory. "this marks a new step forward in the unity of this land This group, brought together from each of the factions, their actions went above and beyond for the sake of our people. As such, this group is to be heralded, and are hereby known, as Vin has mentioned, as 'The Peace-Keepers of Northmorrah'." the crowd erupts once more and Jimmy Connelly makes his way down the line placing a shiny metal broach on each of your chests, he also places a finely embroidered kerchief/armband in your hand, both of these items bare a likeness of the hags skull, a symbol of your success and a recognisable motif of the peacekeepers, apparently an idea that sam had cooked up and has been executed and gifted to you all by the workers faction.
The bonfire in the center of the market dims and dies down, the open air of the winter night comes into full view as Judge Tibus continues, "with this new chapter marked we now look to the sky, as we welcome in the turning if this season and look forward to a new year, we are lucky to also bare witness to a lunar eclipse." As the crowd looks up, the moon shining bright and full in the sky begins to eclipse, the shadow of this land steadily making its way across the pale surface. (everyone make a perception check)
Sam claps enthusiastically at the end of vin’s speech and offers him up a warm smile. The kid did good. Better than he had expected, truth be told. As usual.
Sam smiles at Jimmy and voicelessly mouths his thanks and gives him a head nod as his faction leader distributes the broaches. He had not been expecting the armbands but it was a nice touch.
When Judge Tibus mentions the lunar eclipse Sam turns his eyes to the sky as nearly everyone does. Upon doing so he sidles over next to Elthana and quietly asks her a question while subtly motioning up towards the treasury district…
Gewyn sees Sam and Elthana looking at the same thing as him. Not at the eclipse, but toward the sky over the treasury. He moves to stand beside Vin and pulls Muir up beside him by the arm. He drapes his arms over both of their shoulders in a show of comradery, smiling out at the crowd before whispering, "Activity over the treasury skies. Might be some more portal trouble. Be ready. If trouble breaks out, leave the crowd to me."
Elthana beams at the young man that Vin is. She is so very proud of him, it almost helps her forget her thoughts.. almost. Nodding to Jimmy, she accepts the items.
Then she sees the bats coming from the treasury, the rumbling from the ground and worry etches across her face. After a quick discussion with Sergor and then Sam, she looks to the others and sees that Gewyn has them faced to the treasury as well. Moving over to them she asks, "How long do we have to stay at this ridiculous show? I need to find out what is going on."
Muir out of his element, holding a piece of metal, trying not to offend or screw up looks at what Gewyn’s pointing to. Muir finally snaps out of feeling overwhelmed and now coming back into his own “It looks like the real portal is opening to Griff’s world perhaps and not the one being conjured”
Vin smiles as he follows Gewyn's lead. The black hound Neferox seeming to move closer to the council as she listens. Her focus on the leaders currently behind the Peace-keepers of Northmorrah.
Vin says quietly to Gewyn and Muir "Let's hope it doesn't cause too much trouble like some of the other portals. Hopefully we dont get a panicked crowd on our hands."
To elthana Vin quietly replies "I don't mind keeping folks busy here with Gewyn if you think you can sneak off but I feel we might want to stick together."
The crowd also spots the swarm of creatures over the treasury, some murmurs and pointing make their way through the crowd, and several of the council members begin looking concerned. The ground starts to shake a little as the shadow across the moon continues its path.
At the complete blocking of the moon light only the stars illuminate the sky, people are shouting and panicking at the shaking of the ground which only grows stronger and stronger. Judge Tibus steps up to try to take control of the situation, "Everyone remain calm, there is no need to pan-"...
He is cut off before he can complete his sentence as the sky above the treasury is illuminated by a giant column of pale blue light, it extends into the heavens further than the eye can see and there is a boom which shakes the foundations of the treasury casting dark stone dust over the crowd and the city. The moss covered giant chains that hold the treasury to the earth and look to have not moved in centuries, begin to creak and relax, the entire district seems to list to one side and chunks of rock now beging to fall, crushing buildings and starting fires in the perfume district. The crowd devolves into screaming and stampeding, trying to get away from the district. "Everyone evacuate to the east of town, or get inside, do not push, do not panic!" Tibus' voice rings out, but it mostly falls on deaf ears.
Far far in the east another light can be seen extending into the sky, this one a teal green.
Further to the south east of the continent a gold light reaches up.
Directly south of marblestead, toward the very edge of the continent another light column, a muted purplish grey.
In the north, seemingly far off in the middle of the sea, another column of light, this one a deep blue.
Sergor dives forward and looks to be trying to protect Elthana. Jimmy scrambles up next to Sam and shouts over the din, "what the f*ck is going on?". Hemiran seems to have disappeared without anyone noticing. Master Goodall and Vance Meldane both look around scared.
Muir looks at the portal opening above the the treasury in awe. He pays no attention to what’s happening around him and watches….just watches. As sudden as the portal opened above the treasury, Muir sees the others. He gets excited and exclaims “The conjunction! Everything is aligned! The portals are opening!! Look to the skies!!” Muir containing his excitement sees Goodall and quickly rushes to her. “Master the portals are opening just as I’ve said. Although shame on me for not thinking it would be tonight. That’s just bad form on my part but still look at the lights! Water is north over water! The lights correspond with the planes! You must lead the council with expeditions and making friends. How exciting Goodall!!”
Vin acts. One of the lessons of adventuring is when catastrophe happens every moment counts. You don't always have time to plan. This was a part of his studies that Vin struggled with but after Hokum. He's learned a lot. Panic and stampeding was the immediate threat to folks here. Some would fall and it takes someone to notice to make sure they get back up and not trampled by fleeing people.
Vin summons his broom and says to the others "I've summoned Bry'ze. I'm going to fly to the people futher back and help save folks yherr to get them evacuated. Nef can relay information to me. With so many folks fleeing only those who can fly can help them." Vin can't leave immediately as he has to wait a moment for the broom to get to him but their place wasn't far so it shouldn't take long. In the meantime as he waits, he can coordinate with others how to quickly act. Vin's mind clearly on saving as many folks as possible first.
Nef doesn't seem pleased woth this course of action.
Elthana quickly looks to Muir, "What do you mean, real portal, not one being conjured?" she asks clearly confused.
She barely hears Vin as she waits for an answer from Muir, but as it registered, "True.. together might be a good idea, but we need to figure this out."
After:
Her eyes wide she takes it all in, completely confused and shaken to the core. As Sergor dives to protect her, she grabs hold of his arm and looks him straight in the eye, "What is going on??"
Sergor looks back his eyes open and searching, surprised by Elthana's directness, "...this could be bad" he says as if finishing a sentence.
As vin flies into the air he sees people pushing and shoving trying to get away from the unstable floating district. As he flies over he spots several smaller alleys that are less congested.
Goodall looks to Muir with wide eyes as she looks past Muir to the devastation already caused to the perfume district by the falling rubble, her eyes snap back to the loxodon with a touch of anger, "people and protection first Muir, Go!"
“Best guess,” Sam calmly replies to Jimmy, “The Treasury air portal opened and instead of sending Griff home a bunch of things from his place came to visit…”
“Gewyn!” Sam calls out, loud enough to be heard but not in a panicked tone. “Get that guy to juice up your voice and soothe the damn crowd!”
“Vin, good call to take to the air but get eyes on the visitors and let us know what they are before you deal with the crowd. We need to know if we’re being invaded or if the people are panicking for nothing…” he calls out next.
“You too, Muir! Head in the game! Can you or yours identify what the flying things are?” Sam asks. “Friend or foe? Big or small? Armed or… feathered? I dunno, that’s why we need to!”
“Elthana? You ok?” Sam asks with concern. “You want to make sure the council all get someone safe? Or can your friends do that while we stand ready here? Your call…”
As Sergor's message weighs on Elthana, she hears Sam start barking out orders. Still holding on to Sergor's arm, she turns to her friend, "Sam! They are just bats! The Treasury has loads of them. I'm sure the opening of the portal just spooked them."
Turning back to Sergor, "Can you get the council members out of here and to safety? This panic isn't good for anyone. I will meet you back at the Treasury once things have settled and people are no longer in danger."
Letting go of Sergor, she gets in the middle of their group, "Alright, we need to quell the panic, makes sense for Gewyn to start and yes, the rest of us see what we can do so no one gets hurt!"
It takes the broom a bit to get to vin. It seems lathargic and slow but it makes it from their neerby home as Vin uses the command word to summon it to him. It needed to travel but it did make it. Vin is reminded he needs to get it properly tuned and spellwork reinforced.
While it makes its way Vin replies to Sam "Its bats. Nef can see them close enough. We got to get folks clesr of that in case it falls. Maybe its a blessing most folks are here and we can move quick to get them out of harms way. Tell Nef if you see anything come out of that pillar of light she can communicate it to me. Let's move fast."
The broom arrives and Vin takes off. It seems to be working okay for now but he doesn't want to push it either. He keeps an eye out for folks falling and possible escape routes for folks to dispurse. Flying above the crowds heads its clear how panicked they are. He tries to spot folks he knows are here that he cares about. Three in particular. However, if he doesn't spot them he gets right to directing folks. Flying overhead when he sees someone fall he flies over and gets the people there to help them up so they don't get trampled. He'll cast Barrier (cantrip) spell on thise that do fall to protect them until they can get up. He flies to get right in the face of folks if they are getting too wild as he gets them to calm down and just keep moving. He directs the flow of folks down alleyways not as well known but to Vin he can see they lead to safety. Overall Vin is very busy helping as much as he can directly whole keeping an eye out for folks important to him.
Neferox in the meantime looks to the group. She growls at how unhappy she is with the situation but even she can't argue with the fact a horde is fleeing and she can't follow Vin. She seems to be staring at the group as if waiting for them to tell her something. Glaring with her red eyes as she waits.
Muir hears Goodall's words and becomes embarassed. He hears Sam ask about the winged creatures, sees the panic in the corwds eyes, Gewyn getting ready to help, Vin take to the skies, and Elthana suggest crowd control "This is the portal to the air plane....Soon things will be coming through.... Could be friend or foe....We should have the people of town escape to the woods until we know it is safe. There we can provide better shelter and protection from winged creatures if they are foe. I don't know why Tibus suggests east into the Tangles but if it's already cramped there....won't a stampede of people make it worse? I could barrel through the path to the gates south and out into the woods...." Muir casts speak to animals and listens to see what the bats are communicating before turning to Nef "Vin has taken to the skies will you help us here?"
"Bats??" Sam asks again, a bit more incredulously.
"Like regular damn bats? Then why in bloody rectal hell is everyone in such a tizzy??"
"Gewyn! It's just bats! Get your voice amplified and get on the calming of the citizenry!! Tell them..." Sam pauses for a moment to consider what they should be told and after a moment decides truth is easiest. "Tell them it's only bats flying, not a danger! There does appear to be a problem with the Treasury district but it is being looked into. They should get out from under it and stay out for the time being... But damnit, be calm about it! As for the other lights up in the sky... Tell them we have no reason to think they're a threat but rest assures The Peacekeepers are on it!"
Sam looks around for Judge Tibus or anyone else with an amplified voice who could start so instructing the crowd until Gewyn with his silver tongue and annoying charm can take over...
"I thought you were the one who wanted them all open to make friends?" Sam asks of Muir. "NOW you think they could be a threat?"
"Whatever, people... city people... only feel safe when they have locked doors and roofs over their heads. We send them to the woods there is no way the whole city does not think the end days have come! A big falling rock they can understand to not go under... You start telling them only the woods are safe and people will be going back home to grab every precious thing they can carry and looting others for what they have. Woods are a last case scenario, my friend..."
Muir smiles at Sam "You know city folks better than me....I was simply pointing out we don't know who or what is coming through the portal. Could be friend of Griff or foe was my point..I will lead the people east as instructed. Once Gewyn calms the folks I will shift into a large animal and lead the way"
Gewyn takes everything in, thrust suddenly into all out crisis. Some people are saying the Tangles, Muir is saying the woods... but his priorities seem a little different from the rest. Gewyn makes a quick decision. He reaches into the breast of his jacket and pulls out his concealed pipes. He plays a loud shrill note, setting off a shower of sparks right above his head.
"Hear me, people of Marblestead! Fear not, it is for moments like these that we, the Peacekeepers of Northmorrah have been presented to you. We shall make haste with a coordinated response to the situation with the treasury and the perfumed district. Already, my comrades leap to action, and evacuation efforts are well underway. For the safety of all, I would ask that you make your way to the Tangles."He plays a short tune on his pipes, and the largest path towards the Tangles begins to glow with a soft yellow light.
"This is another chance for us to come together as one people. A chance for us to open our doors to one another. To help up those who stumble in the street. Go and be safe. Get indoors if you can. The clearer the roads, the easier it will be for us to organize our response."
As Vin takes to the skies above the crowds and begins casting barriers over those who fall and those who need protecting, Gewyn Iights up the paths to ease congestion and crushing. The crowd, no less panicked do start organising themselves a little better and make their way towards the tangles.
Sam looks to the sky, and now that it has been pointed out to him, he does see that high off the creatures could well be bats, though them being spooked is no less concerning. Sergor grabs Elthana arm and states directly, "bring your group, meet me in the cellar soon." and then he is off gathering the council and along with a group of legion guards and another group of black clad monks, the council members evacuate into the council District to protect themselves and plan a response. Only Judge Tibus remains as he starts directing his generals to take control of the crowds and assist Gewyn, Vin and also Muir, as the loxodon transforms into a large beast for the injured to climb onto.
The shadow of this realm makes its way off the face of the moon, bathing the scene in more pale light. As it does the massive column of pale blue directly over head begins to dim. The chains holding the treasury strain and cry out like only stressed metal can, far to the west of the city one chain pulled taught by the listing of the district gives out and falls, crashing down upon houses and levelling walls over the perfume and council District. Screams ring out, fires erupt.
Through the chaos the group remembers familiar faces, those who moments ago were looking up and listening to vins speech in awe,. Drawlin, Hazel, Biggly, Tez, Soren, Annabel with a gaggle of kids, Mithcyra, Helana, Darla. All of these people now swallowed by the mass of rushing crowd and gone from view.
Iver shouts to the group over the groaning of the chains, "I'm with you! What's the plan?" The shaking of the ground eases.
Elthana groans when the chain actually breaks and severely damages parts of the perfume and council district. Feeling a bit stunned with the shock of it all, it takes Iver shout to pull her back to herself.
Seeing through the chaos that the crowd is actually making its progression towards the tangles she looks to her friends, "I need you with me, we have to do something about the Treasury before more devastation happens." Leaning over to talk to Neferox, "Please, call Vin back, we need him too."
Then to Iver, "You have the most important job, I need you to lead the guards as they direct the crowd to the tangles. Help set people up temporarily as we figure out what the hell is going on. We need you Iver."
And without waiting for an answer, she starts heading for the ground location of the gondolas.
