Sam and Muir after finding a decent sized pillar begin heaving and pulling at it, after a short amount of time, a length of rope and lots of swearing and mammoth trumpeting the two return to the Gondola station lugging a pillar 20ft long, 10ft in diameter and heavy as hell. The monk guard at the station looks bewildered and asks Sam directly "what are you planning on doing with that? And I mean that literally, be very specific, if we know what you're doing we might be able to help"
(As Sam explains the plan I need athletics checks from Sam, Muir and anyone else who might help out with positioning this pillar)
“I’m gunna shove it up your…” Sam starts but stops, takes a breath, and recalls they were just introduced to everyone as Peacekeepers. Sam sighs and curses Jimmy for getting him into this nonsense.
“First we get the cable looped around the pillar, yes? Then, hopefully, what I think some magic I stumbled into does is what I think it does and it does allow me to have the earth basically swallow the pillar down into itself, thus hopefully dragging the cable down with it til taut…” Sam explains. “Hopefully.”
“I ain’t never used this magic before,” Sam admits scratching his head and looking at the task ahead.
“Theoretically I can make the earth below it glow up and over it. This’ll both lower the pillar and hopefully weigh it down at the same time… yes?” Sam looks around at everyone else Hopi g his plan makes sense to others besides himself.
After getting the last person down and summoning back byr'ze Vin seems to pause for a moment and look back at the group. After he seems to surveil the area he nods and mounts up to head up to take a peek ahead. Vin moving to fly up towards the Treasury. See who is there still and what the situation is so he can help give a report to the others once they find a way up.
Nef in the meantime begins to pace back and forth nervously. She seems in a really agitated state as she eyes the wobbly line that the white wolf climbed up then looks to the efforts of the others securing the cables and chains so that it won't break off and fall. Her red eyes glow with annoyance as things seem to be taking too long. He eyes darting up towards where Vin went and back to the group messing with cables and chains. She continues to lace back and forth clearly not happy with this. She definitely doesn't like Vin's new flying toy.
With Sam and Elthana holding the pillar steady and Muir with his trunk attempting to lift the pillar onto its base, the group spend another 20 minutes lining the pillar up next to the top cable. The next 10 minutes are used to pull the bottom cable over the top one to free up the pillar to fall only dragging down the top cable and in turn tighten the bottom cable upon which the Gondola rests. The monk guards do their bit in making sure the cable is in the center of the fallen pillar and even cut out a groove to secure the cables movement within the pillar without the risk of it falling off one of the ends.
Now it is simply up to Sam to excavate the ground beneath it.
What everyone sees once everything is ready is Sam thunk his mace down on the ground at his feet and then fold his hands over the end of the handle and rest his chin upon him hands. He seems to be resting for a moment but the closer people look the more obvious it is that there is some movement to him, as if he was shaking from squeezing something too hard for too long. Also... he seems to be chanting something under his breath.
Then... eventually... movement. Not Sam but the ground in front of him. It is subtle. Almost easier to see happen by looking away and then back and noting the change because as it is watched the changes, at least at first, are so subtle it appears to not be happening at all. But first dirt and soil starts accumulating around the sides of the pillar. Just a gathering at first... A dusting. But the dust gathers and gathers and becomes piles and piles, as if an invisible broom was sweeping the earth itself up against the pillar. Then when the piles are undeniable the dirt isn't just around the sides of the thing but above it as well. Building up and over the pillar until the thing is buried in dirt.
Yet as it becomes buried it gains no height. It can't be seen directly but rather only via the lack of the pile of dirt gaining height. It is undeniable more and more dirt is joining the pile but the pile is not growing. The dirt from under the pillar is shifting... moving... traveling from under the pillar to atop it - Burying it even as it sinks into the ground that keeps moving out from under it.
It is not quick. It is seemingly annoying slow and not an easy thing for Sam despite the appearance that he is doing nothing... But the pillar subtly is eased down into the ground, sunk as surely as a ship at sea.
The pillar slowly and surely descends into and beneath the newly uprooted soil and stone that made up this portion of the walkway between buildings in the council District. Between this new obstacle and the state of disrepair that a certain building is experiencing after Sam and Muir's liberation of a structural piece of architecture, the council District has taken a bit of a beating in the last hour.
Those who find it boring to watch the dirt have their attention called to the Gondola itself which rises slowly. Sam in his concentrated focus has to be told to stop when the Gondola cables tightens enough. The dull purple grey colours of arcanum spreading across his armour dim as he finishes casting and he is radiating heat and is visibly sweating.
Once the reparations are complete, and the loose dirt tamped down to avoid any unwanted pillar movement, the monk guards signal the lift and activate the system, which has an unhealthy grinding sound now but does bring the Gondola to rest at its station in front of you, the doors open and there seems to be enough room for ten people in there, "uhhhhh you'll have to leave your mammoth I'm afraid," the guard pipes up, a little hesitantly.
The Mammoth quickly changes back into muir who appears on all fours in front of them. Muir looks up and smiles “Well then up we go yes?The wolf is waiting. They are a guardian of the land much like the white bear Yen we came across. They are at the portal protecting it “
"Well then."Gewyn says. "Glad I am that we were able to part ways with the wolf on peaceful-ish terms last we encountered him. Let's go see what we can do."He steps onto the gondola
The group board the Gondola, which is quite the fancy enclosed carriage big enough to fit ten people. Looking around it appears that Neferox has disappeared, and as people were working on fixing the Gondola, she may have been gone a while. The Gondola sets off to the unnerving sounds of the cable grating in protest against the pillar and loose ground that it has been buried under.
On the way up the air thins and the cold of the winter night bites at people's fingers and necks. The ground gets further and further away, height is a new experience and maybe a new fear for those who have not experienced being so high before. Towards the top and looking down it is easy to estimate that the treasury hangs in the air well over 1500ft. The Gondola docks with a hiss and the pang of metal hitting metal as the brakes are applied. The group cannot get off fast enough as a small crowd of clerk's and administrators clamour for a place on the Gondola to descend to the ground. Black clad monks with headscarves obscuring their face try to maintain order with these people but the panic in the air is tangible and it is obvious that the monks are trying their best under very unusual circumstances.
The ground underfoot is noticeably leaning and uncomfortable to balance upon. Every building on this island appears to be made of dark stone and gas a very Gothic style to it, gargoyle look down upon you from rooftops, to the left an administrative building has a large crack up the side of it, to the right an academy stands quiet and seemingly empty, from the shadows the group feels watched by many many eyes, and the bats screeching and circling overhead draw attention to a grand gothic castle directly in front of the group.
Between the group and the castle there is disturbance in the snow, the obvious tracks of people going back and forth from building to building through the Snowfall, but more than that, the signs of a scuffle and large wolfprints leading from the Gondola to the main castle doors which stand open and heavily guarded by a visible force black clad of monks.
On the Gondola ride up Muir shares with the group a few things he learned “I hadn’t gotten a chance to explain all the portals to you are being none of you returned to the house while I was there and awake. Myself and a portal enthusiast from Vin’s school had great conversations about them. We figured out where they were somewhat….we were a little off but had the general areas. What I didn’t piece together, which is my own shortsightedness, was the importance of the solstice. I was a fool to not recognize that the realms would align tonight. Alas here we are…. Earth, water, air, fire, fae, celestial, and our realm, 7 in total. It is interesting that we all have a connection to one of the realms…Sam and Earth, Elthana and Air, Vin and fire which begs the question where is the fire dog….and Gewyn and the fae but….possibly more….I digress….there was a Great War eons ago and if that’s to happen again we need friends such as Griff and his realm. We must help the wolf keep the portal open and figure out a way to keep the treasury intact….”
Vin is waiting at the top of the gondola ride. It's easy to explain how he got here first. He just flew up. However, Neferox is standing in his shadow next to him. How did she get up before everyone else?
Vin waves to everyone when he sees the gondola finally arriving near the top. He seems to be surrounded by other folks that have been waiting to get down and takes some time to talk to them. Telling them something as the group arrives. Folks begin to move a bit out of the way in anticipation of the gondola finally returning.
Vin waits where the gondola arrives and when everyone gets off he says "Hello! Haha, the folks here said you wouldn't get it working again. I told them to have a bit more faith. My friends can do anything. Anyway, lots going on. Best I can tell we got to let Elthana give us permission to go anywhere other then the monk school across the way from the castle. The castle is where the white wolf went to. They won't let us near there without special permission. Far as I can tell they haven't dealt with the wolf yet. I miss anything below?"
Before boarding the gondola Sam catches the guard who warned them about trying to load the mammoth aboard and gets his attention by tapping him on the shoulder lightly. "We shall have need of your assistance," Sam explains in a soft conspiratorial voice, "in order to keep the pillar buried. I'm no sorcerer or wizard, my skills are very limited. This is a temporary patch... To keep the pillar buried we will need you to help. I will need you to chant the ritual words while you slowly pace around the buried pillar..."
The magic words are: Meka Leka Hi Meka Hiney Ho... repeat ad nauseum. Deception: 19 or Persuasion: 8 depending on what you feel appropriate.
"All aboard Neferox... Err, Neferox? Anyone see the damn dog?" Sam would call out and look up with cable wondering if perhaps they followed the white wolf thataway... But Sam quickly dismisses the idea - The beast woulda done it immediately if he could have. Still, he's shock that it would just abandon Vin so... But he never did trust the mutt.
((Odds Sam is afraid of heights and very much sticks to the middle of the gondola and refusing to look out the windows... Evens he is sticking his head out the window loving it - The higher the number the more extreme the effect: 18))
"This is awesome!" Sam exclaims as the inch higher and higher. "Oh shit! Look! Our new house! You can see it from here right over that way!" Sam suddenly shifts from one side of the carriage to the other make the whole thing shift and shimmy a bit. "You think we'd hear a coin hit the ground from here??"
"Wait... What?" Sam calls out, pulling his head back inside the carriage and looking to Muir. "You WANT a repeat of this great war you talk of? Shouldn't we be trying to stop a war?? We were just named PEACEKEEPERS.... And don't give us no crap about we didn't stop home, you could have found us if you wanted to. I am not buying for a second that you weren't hoarding every little secret you could..." Sam will listen to whatever response Muir may have but Sam is obviously miffed and huffy about the whole thing.
Climbing carefully out of the carriage, for he is large and such things are generally built with the more petite in mind, Sam is relieved to see Vin. Less so Nef. "Permission?" Sam snorts. "Whatever, let's follow the wolf!" Sam insists and starts heading that way immediately, following the tracks.
Muir shakes his head “No, no you misunderstand me. I don’t want the Great War to happen but if it does we will need friends. We did what we could for the Fae but they will not be able to help much. Griff’s realm though, he could vouch for us. And dear Sam as much as I would have like to find you all, my research took me well into the evening. Besides to tell what I know 4 times over again is inefficient use of my time. This I’ve told you everything I know now, as I have throughout the course of being together. I am as I’ve said an open book…..Ask me whatever you wish, I’ve been nothing but honest” Muir let’s it linger looking at the others three
"Great, I' take you up on that, Muir. Once we're off of this dangling death trap." He braces himself against the wall as Sam shakes the gondola side to side, and one hand is white-knuckling the mirror he'd had tucked into his belt under his cloak.
Upon reaching solid- albeit floating- ground, Gewyn walks straight forward 5 paces from the edge before taking a deep breathe and turning around to look back they way they'd just come. Then he takes in the castle and the grim-looking monks. "It's a wonder this place doesn't have a booming tourist industry. The ambiance is..." he shudders and looks over his shoulder, expecting to see a shadow watching him from a dark window somewhere
Elthana listens to Muir's report on the portals. "That's fascinating. And you were able to figure all that out in a couple of days? Did you know some of this beforehand and brought this knowledge with you, or? And is there one that you connect to like we apparently do?"
As they reach the top and she sees how the people of the treasury are clambering for a way down, she admonishes them. "You are all representatives of the Treasury. Act like it."
The situation calling for immediate action seems to help Elthana act more like herself as she watches Sam start heading for the castle. Edging past the man, she coolly states, "Yes. Permission." and she heads directly towards the black clad monks.
Addressing them and bypassing formalities, "So the great white wolf is now a guest? Where did he go?"
Muir excitedly answers Elthana's question ears flapping quite fast "I hadn't known exactly for sure until I met with someone, a Mr.Biggly, who helped confirm my suspicions. I thought that perhaps the elements were represented but didn't have it confirmed until we went through books and art work. Art was very helpful....There was also a story about a war over a Celestial and Demon Lord's child....The celestial was killed and before the child could be killed, the father who was a Demon Lord might I remind you, teleportted the child to a different plane....it lived! Imagine a Celestial and Demon Lord lineage....Sorry I digress.....I am unsure which the Keepers are attune to....I assumed the fae but could be wrong."
Neferox growls and gnashes at Muir barking a warning.
The clerks and administrator's of the treasury who were clambering for a ride off this tilting rock look immediately ashamed at Elthana's admonishment, they quickly form a more organised queue and ten of the closest most panicked people board the Gondola and begin descending.
The monks in front of the broken castle doors quickly stand to attention when Elthana acknowledges them, "word from Mister Hamilton, the wolf is no guest but attacking it would be futile, he said to let it pass but this was only after we had tried to hold it back for a few moments... He's expecting you, Sigrid should be joining shortly too"
The group are let past and into the castle. The feeling of being watched from the shadows only ceases once they have crossed the threshold, but it is taken over by an eerie creeping sensation that shudders the spine. Those with arcane proficiency feel a power in this building.
Snow clad wolf prints lead into the main hall and then off toward a descending stair case, as Elthana leads the group.
Muir looks down at Nef and says loudly for his companions to hear "Quiet you demon. I grow tired of you snarling at us all and threatening us all. You overgrown windbag....either help us understand or be quiet and protect Vin. We are all on the same team so unless you are going to pitch in and tell us the story that I seem to have gotten incorrectly then I don't want to hear any more of your threats towards me, Sam, Elthana, or Gewyn." Muir looks at the others before adding "The others may be ok with a demon constantly threatening their lives but I am not. Now if you are quite done with youself then let us proceed to the task at hand."
Elthana stops in her tracks in the main hall before descending and looks at Muir. Hands on her hips she regards Neferox, then with a sigh, "Alright, out with it. Constantly threatening our lives? Same team is right, is this hound not on our team? And what story has Muir gotten incorrect? Muir, what is going on? Quickly though, cause we need to keep moving."
