“If you are saying we all represent an element connected to a portal…” Sam inquires after Muir’s explanation, “then surely you must know, or suspect, who really pulled the strings and formed the team? If we’re so perfectly chosen it couldn’t be mere coincidence our factions all picked us unknowingly…”
Later, when Muir barks back at the fog, Sam points out “It’s only a threat if you think they can do it,” and shrugs, having stopped worrying about the hound and its bark.
Muir doesn't wait for Nef's response but looks right at Elthana and answers matter of factly "Throughout our travels I have had a druidic spell in use which allows me to understand animals speak...It has provided information from birds and other small creatures but it also allowed me to understand Nef's grunts, snarls, barks, even when Vin could not understand. She threatens you all, time and time again. This time she threatened me and I quote"you delve into matters which do not concern you! You know nothing of the hells and what happened there! Cease your tongue lest I Rip it from your mouth" I tire of the threats constantly hurled at the 4 of us....Nef has threatened each of you....Sam the most and Gewyn close behind. Elthana the least...she does not draw the ire of the demon as much as Sam and Gewyn....much more has been said but I will not reveal it" Muir looks at Vin knowingly and then back at the others then addressing Sam "If that is how you feel about the threats made towads you and if you others are fine with the constant threats then so be it. I will not speak of it again, but I will not aid you in your dealings with the demon for I have warned you in this matter."
Vin is really confused suddenly, he doesnt seem to understand what is making Nef so upset as he tries to calm her down. Nef begins to bark and growl at Muir and the young man says "what? Nef i can't... whats going on?" As folks point out her threatening and aggressive manner she seems to ignore all others except Muir. As he continues to report her words there is a moment. A moment of things pushed too far. The warning given and ignored, the insults thrown. The hound does not stand. They howl in fury something at Muir as charge them. They have eyes only for the loxodon. A black beast of rage and hate for all but one being. Her Maw opens wide as she goes to attack Muir and leaps at him.
There is a spray of blood.
Her teeth find purchase. They tear into flesh and rip away from the being she bit into. Blood flowing between her teeth as she gnaws deeply trying to silence her intended target. However, it's Vin who rushed forward and placed himself between Muir and her. The young man yelling "NO! THEY ARE OUR FRIEN....ugk!"
He's cut off as Neferox seems to realize she didn't bite Muir. She bit into Vin just to the side of his neck but seems to have just missed anything vital. He put himself in front of Muir and stood up to Neferox and got bit for it. She pulls back instantly. Vin's blood on her. A coppery taste upon her maw. Vin seems stunned. Vin says "Nef..."
The hound for once isn't full of pride or rage but something completely different. She looks to Vin and seems like she wants to help him but steps in a bit of his blood. There is a moment of realization and then she turns and runs. Vin tries to reach an arm out to grab her but the damage to his shoulder makes a sudden surge of pain shoot through his arm causing him to fault as he weekly says "Nef... no..."
Vincent is struggling through the sudden pain he finds himself in as he watches Nef run he seems intent on chasing her despite the wound she just gave him.
As Neferox disappears from sight, she runs around the outside of the castle walls where she can be heard growling and barking more.
Just after Neferox runs off, a black robed dragonborn approaches the party seemingly in a rush, her scales are grey and her snout is pointed into a resting sneer and here eyes dart between the members of the group before resting on Elthana for a moment and then the dragonborn rushes off deeper into the castle.
Sam brings his maul up and steps forward but is too slow to stop any of it. Having been looking for the wolf’s footprints or for what was giving him that watched feeling it even for proof that the Treasury is run by vampires and ghouls… having been looking for any threat besides one from within his own group… Sam is too slow.
The thought crossed his mind to drop the maul and grab his bow but the kid is reaching out after the beast even then… Sam knew despite his wound the kid wasn’t wanting the thing brought down.
“Well help him already!” Sam insist to Muir, shoving him towards Vin. Sam wasn’t really mad at Muir (though he did tile the beast for no hood reason) but he was worried about the kid. If only we had hired the potion maker, he thought, knowing he himself had no way to help…
Staring at Vin, Elthana finally asks, "Are you ok?"
The dragonborn seems to stop Elthana from saying anymore and as the woman rushes further into the castle, Elthana gives chase, "C'mon! We can deal with Neferox later, the Treasury is collapsing!"
Muir watches in horror Vin stepping in between himself and Nef. Vin injured with blood pouring out, still reaches for the demon. Muir feeling a twang of guilt for letting his anger get the better of him, feels Sam's push. Muir quickly puts his hands on Vin and heals his wounds (+7 to vin rolled in Discord). He then moves to follow Elthana
Gewyn rushes over to Vin's side. "Vin, hold on! Are you okay? Here" Gewyn grabs Vin's good arm and drapes it over his shoulders. "Let's go. We can't stay here." He starts walking after Elthana and Muir, supporting Vin as he does
Seeing Vin try to take off, Sam attempts to snag him before he can. This isn’t the time to go after the hound and Sam intends to remind him of that… But if Sam misses he’ll let the kid go. He’s not going to force him to come along…
((if Sam can snag him he’ll say in a lot, growls, I distant voice: “Kid, we have lived to save. Our own included. If Nef needs time they need time but right now we need you… Find the mutt after you’ve both had some time to think.” Sam will then release him and allow him to make his own decision.))
Not even noticing that Vin has started off in the other direction, Elthana notes the feather and is glad Griff will be around when they face whatever it is they are heading down to. She charges ahead.
Muir not caring about the demon looks to Vin with sad eyes and then to Elthana who was charging ahead. He looks back at Vin as Sam tries to stop him hoping Sam is successful. Muir follows after Elthana.
Dizzy at first it takes a moment for Vin to orient himself to whats going on. He reached out for Neferox just as she looks at what shes done and Vin tried to grab her but failed. He wasnt fast enough. As his friends help him get back up, pain shoots through his shoulder. At Sam's behest, Muir heals up Vin's shoulder a little bit but only stops the bleeding.
At first Vin is dazed as he replies to Elthana. "I'm... okay.... thank you... I don't... she didn't..." its clear to see he didn’t expect to get hurt by Neferox. The one that has kept him safe. Raised him in many ways when he didn't fit in anywhwre else. It's no secret that Nef is the closest thing to family he's had for much of his life.
Gewyn helps Vin up and braces the young man. Vin is looking at where Nef ran though. Struggling to figure out what to do. Then he hears Nef barking and growling. Vin knows that's not good. "I have to stop her. I can't..." he seems panicked and then he suddenly dashes at the sound of her barking and threatening growls. A big hand grazes his back as he suddenly dashes off but it doesn't find purchase as Vin narrowly gets ahead of Sam's attempt to stop the young man from being reckless.
He runs towards the barks of Neferox. Following behind the one who just maimed him. Trying to catch up. A look of determination and desperation mixed upon him as he dashes off.
As Vin escapes and runs out of the castle once more followed by Gewyn and whoever else gives chase, it is not long before they hear where Neferox went. Around the corner she is barking and whimpering, it is not long before the group members see her, struggling on the darks stone cobbles of an alleyway, against the cords of the bolas that are wrapped around her legs. Two monks half enshrouded in shadow watch as she struggles, waiting for her to calm.
Inside, Elthana leads the way down the stairs noting the orange feather left behind after Griff. She leads those who follow her down a dimly lit basement corridor and to a room at the end which houses filled wine racks and barrels.
Sam spares a moment to look back at Vin as he runs off but he does not follow. The mission is to save the Treasury. Or, for Sam, that which is beneath it. Not that Sam has any more ill will for the Treasury than he does any in power but he believes it would be those who live and work in it's shadow who would suffer the most if it falls...
"You think anyone would mind?" Sam asks with a nod towards the surely very pricey beverages. "I am quite parched..." Despite his wit, Sam is on guard and looking for anything and everything unusual. Or usual. This is all new to Sam so he is interested in taking in everything he sees. "Just where we headed anyway? We have any idea what to do?"
Ignoring Sam and barely noticing that Gewyn and Vin are not with them, Elthana reaches up and grabs the torch sconce on a pillar. As she pulls it towards her, the winerack moves away from the wall and exposes a doorway.
Once open, she continues down it without a glance behind her.
Sam raises an eyebrow at the secret passageway and then shrugs as Elthana moves so effortlessly through it. With a glance and a raised eyebrow to Muir, Sam grabs one of the bottles off the rack and... then puts it back once he realizes he's not wearing his backpack or any other place in which to put the bottle. He was at a formal event not gallivanting around. Damnit...
"Maybe on the way out?" he asks rhetorically as he follows after Elthana.

With Neferox running out of the castle and vin now healed enough to chase after his dog, the group start to move on.
Elthana, now half way down a staircase leading to a wine cellar, spots a familiar coloured orange feather at the bottom.
As vin tears himself away from the group to give chase, the group is left with a decision to split or to help.
