“Testing it?” Sam answers sounded a bit guilty and hurt. “What?? I usually test potions this way…” Sam them wipes his fingertip off on his pant leg and re-stoppers the bottle.
“Healers taste a bit cherry-ish. That growth potion I almost bought tasted a bet stoney, like licking a rock. Poison is usually a bit bitter and tingly… So was curious about this is all,” Sam finishes, looking around to the others. He then stows the bottle in his bag. He doesn’t plan to use it but might be interesting to see what Hog or someone has to say of it.
Hearing Elthana admonish Sam, Vin turns to look at his two companions. As Sam explains his reasoning he can't help but think it isn't entirely without merit.
"There are other ways to figure this out" he says and carefully moves to a sitting position in the middle of his hammock. He then concentrates on the potion he was given, trying to discern whatever he can about it.
After examining the potion for a minute, Vin looks back up towards the others.
"This is an incredibly potent poison that freezes the blood in the heart long enough to cause death, before the blood thaws leaving no trace of the cause. All that is needed for it work is to enter the bloodstream", he explains. "This bottle holds maybe five doses, and even that small amount would possibly have had fatal consequences".
He looks at Sam seriously, "I hope you don't have a cut on that finger".
Elthana shudders at Vin's words and then watches Sam for awhile, making sure that he doesn't seem off.. though she would have no idea what to do about it. But then adds, "I don't recommend continuing your testing of potions that way. What if it had been acid?"
Griff makes a heavy facepalm at Sam's lack of care with the deadly poison and lets everyone who needs it get their sleep. Orga and Molly take up positions guarding the group too, as well as Neferox who is less than thrilled at Orga's reappearance.
Gewyn takes himself to a slightly roomier part of the cabin, uncomfortably a little closer to the sleeping Cordo, and he begins training in his capabilities of inverting his gravity, gently thumping from the ceiling to the floor in such a rhythmic way that it only really helps people sleep.
"Well acid would've burnt my finger and I'd have known not to taste it, wouldn'tve I?" Sam asks with some amusement. Like as if! Having spent an age doing physical labor and getting blisters and splinters and cuts, scrapes, burns, bruises and plenty more on a regular basis Sam really thinks everyone is being a wee bit too worried about every little nick and scrape...
The brown bear, not having come up as often as Órga or Molly, is less fastidious about their guard duty and they spend a lot of time amusedly watching Gewyn bounce around, occasionally even giving it a try themselves. They are far less graceful about it than Gewyn.
Molly mostly stand around and chews on some spare rigging rope that was laying around... Órga, however, plays the role of guard quite well. When he's not snorting at Neferox's annoyance...
Muir sat and watched everything and wondered what would have happened. Sam is big, healthy, and orc….Would he have died from such a minuscule amount Muir wondered. “Well maybe another time eh Sam…We could test it out on something else and see its effects…I can’t help but wonder what this is made of and how it would work in nature…”
Vin yawns and looks across to Muir, “If I had a herbalism kit, I might be able to help you there. I remember doing a whole course on making and identifying various concoctions”.
“Hey what do you know, something else I remember”, he says wearily.
Time passes and Spier Umar flies through the vast pale blue of Thaeir to your destination. Those who spent the last leg of the journey sleeping are gently woken by Griff, "We are being nearly there, you should come see the sight yes?" He asks as he wakes you all.
Apparently a few shift changes had happened whilst you were all sleeping and Cordo is back in his bunk off to the side of where your hammocks hang. A sharp and sickly smell lingers in the air as the black dragonborn appears to be hunched over spewing his acidic draconic breath into crystal vials and corking them before stowing them away and repeating the process, as some of you note this behaviour he gives a bit of a side eye and mutters "people trade for this stuff y'know" as an apparent excuse.
As you get up and out of your cabin, you stand on the back of Spier Umar, wind rushing past and making hearing difficult. Coming into view ahead of the massive bird, a perpetually falling crystal rock hangs in the space, ever growing as you draw nearer.
The massive buildings on Gojiin appear to be fatter and rounder than the spires and crystal towers of Akiin. Even from this far away the architectural differences seem notably different, though the blue crystal colour of Gojiin appears to be duller than Akiin's island, as if something is covering it, marking it and making it seem less pristine. Flocks of birds can be seen swarming and diving around the island in their thousands, and in the distance far on the other side of the island, what looks like a massive winged whale flies off into the beyond. "Could you have been dreaming of such sights on your plane? Disgusting is it not?" Griff asks shouting over the tumultuous winds.
As Griff approaches Elthana and is just about to wake her, the elf's eyes pop open and flailing, she falls out of the hammock, hitting the ground hard. She immediately scrambles up and looks around, searching for each of you. Seeing you all alive and well, she appears to relax a touch. She walks over to Vin and holds his face in her hands. "Are you ok? You're with us, right?"
Looking at her, sweat has matted her hair to her skin, massive rings under her eyes again and her eyes themselves have a hint of fear in them under the weariness of a terrible sleep. She lets go of Vin and rubs one of her right arm with her left hand standing a bit hunched over. Then, smelling the acid from Cordo's breath, the feeling in her body and that overwhelm her and she knows she's going to be sick, she looks desperately around for... anything!
Vin comes to consciousness slowly, having been in a very deep, healing sleep. Sliding out of his hammock, he stretches tentatively, noting how the aches and pains had receded, and how his skin didn't feel quite so tight over his scars. He still wasn't one hundred percent, but he felt a whole lot better. And the haziness he had been feeling due to lack of rest had gone as well, which he was glad about. He had made one particularly dubious decision due to tiredness, and he had almost paid the ultimate price.
When Elthana approaches and grabs his head, squishing his cheeks together, he replies as best he can.
"Don't worry, I'm still here. I can't say good as new, but on the mend". Noticing the state Elthana is in as she releases him, he can't help but ask, "You look terrible. Anyone would have thought you had been the one who...was almost mortally wounded. You ok?". He just manages to stop himself saying died, as he notices Cordo in the room.
As he follows Griff outside, he pats his thigh in an indication that he would like Nef to follow. Not that it is needed, as soon as he starts walking towards the door she is on her feet and acting as his shadow.
As they stand and view the scene, he strains to hear what Griff is saying.
"Did you say disgusting?", he asks loudly. "I think it has a certain charm".
Sam's eyes show concern over Elthana's state but he doesn't question her about it. He has the feeling she will open up when ready and pressing would only delay that. He does make a point to gently elbow her and say "Ready to see the sights?" as Griff is leading them outside, a smile of confidence and companionship on his face as he does.
Outside Sam isn't overly impressed. It is... interesting to be sure. But Sam isn't overly fond of all this flying and floating and up being left and down being backwards crap. It's just a bit more than he wants to deal with. Specially since he can't just hit it and make it better.
"Here kid," he says at one point and subtly hands Vin a potion. He's not hiding the fact, just not making a show of it. "I know you get cold up in the sky on your broom. Least you did back home. This'll help but likely not for long. But maybe in a fight or such it'll be better if you're not half frozen during, eh?" ((Potion of Cold Resistance deleted and given to Vin.)
Sam digs around in his stuff and pulls out another item as well. "Gewyn," he says to get the bard's attention. "This was sent by Hog the other day. It may do you more good than me..." And with that Sam hands Gewyn a Whetstone of sharpness. "It won't do much for the Maul so no point me carrying it around..." (That may be a homebrew item? DM may need put on your sheet?)
Sam pays some attention to how Griff answers Vin but he figures he kind of knows the answer already. It sounds like Griff and his bosses are the ruling class of this realm and so that would mean Griff was looking at... the ghetto? Sam knew that would taint Griffs view of it no matter the reality. Sam does have some words for the birdman when there is a moment though...
"Griff... You know getting us where we needed to go is your job. Nothing else. All you really need do is point and go home. None of us are wanting you to get hurt on this mission..."
---
Ógra, Molly and the Brown Bear all follow Sam but once outside stay ten feet or so back, flanked out a distance from one another. Except for Molly, who chewed on whatever she could find and get away with, they're hungry and looking around for viable food sources. Sam eventually thinks of this and tosses them some rations... That should tide them over so they don't attack some crew at least. He hopes.
Vin looks at the potion placed in his hand, and then up into Sam's face, feeling some sense of paternal protection. Whether it was Sam's intent or not, he finds the feeling comforting.
"Thanks, Sam", he says as he puts it away in his pack.
Muir sat on his hammock and watched his friends wake and move about. He was going to check on Vin but didn't want to fuss first thing in the morning or afternoon or whenever it is they all woke. Muir follows them all outside and looks wideeyed at the sights that Griff scoffs at. Muir doesn't understand Griff's negativity "Griff, what is the flying whale called? That is quite the sight! Large fish swim in the sea in our world, they do not fly. are they trainable? What a way to fly from island to island...but I suppose the large bird is more efficient. And what about those birds? What are they called? Are they a nuissance? They seem to be swarming..." Muir about to continue with his line of questioning, decides to take a pause and a breath. He looks at his friends and sees Vin who still appears to be in pain, Elthana who still looks like they have not slept, Sam looking uncomfortable being here, and Gewyn walking about like he has been walking here for years...."I agree with Sam's contention Griff....Get us there and go home. There's no need for you to risk your life on this mission. We want to get in and get out without a fuss."
"I just... I had another nightmare." she shrugs as Vin asks her. "There is also the strangest feeling during it... almost like a pull on my body, from the deepest core of it. I can't really explain it, but that is new here in Thaeir. Wish I knew how to stop them.. they are truly awful." She looks up at Sam and tries to smile back, "Yeah, sights and fresh air sound good."
Elthana stares off to the distant island, a bit lost in her own thoughts. Griff's comment doesn't really register with her, neither does the comments from her friends. She wonders what is in store for them at Gojiin, and she wishes they had more of a direction on finding these bones. She had a feeling this was not going to be an easy mission and the weariness wore on her.
"I am only able to be escorting you all to Gojiin, this was being my order. There I will be helping you find leads and waiting with guard until you are returning from broken isles. Then I can be escorting you back if it is being necessary, or you can be sending me away, but not before your returning.
The reasoning I am saying is being disgusting Vin, is that this island, Gojiin, it is lacking honor, and it is showing in the streets, in the respect that the people's there have for the island itself."
At Muir's question, Griff looks off in the distance, "hmmm is Blugufa, they are not being controllable, but if you can be taking one down it's fats make good oils and its meat is plenty."
Spier descends through a cloud of learning birds (normal sized) and the horizon disappears from view as the massive black bird descends into a massive pit carved out of the crystal island. The first notable thing is the smell and the warmth, deep within this hole a musky mould smell lingers and heat from the platforms surrounding the edges of the hole settles low and dense. The wind immediately stops leaving a bit of a ringing in everyone ears, but it is now a lot easier to talk.
Gale approaches the group just after Spier takes up a perch on one of the larger platforms. He speaks a few words of Auran to Griff who nods in agreement and then Gale turns to the group, "everything has been squared up, I thank you again for your assistance mid journey and hope the rest of your travels aren't as fraught with such dangers, have a good time in Gojiin and feel free to leave us as soon as you have all of your belongings, out deal here is done."
The crew begin taking off the cargo containers from the front of Spier Umar and using the platforms pulleys and equipment to lower the things down to the ground safely, but for the most part the group are left to their oen devices.
"You mean there is a lot of litter? Is that what attracts all those birds?", Vin asks of Griff as they descend from Spier Umar, trying to understand his meaning.
When they have all disembarked he turns to the group, animals and all. "Ok, what's the plan? Do we know where these Broken Isles are and how to get to them?", he asks, pretty sure he is meant to know this stuff but the answer seems to elude him at the moment.
Once again Neferox stays very close, eyeing up anyone other than the group and the crew.

Sam too shifts and adjusts and finally lies down on his bunk and closes his eyes…
