"Muir!" Sam calls out as he spies the big lummox slip and fall. Without a thought of the stability of the platform they are on or such Sam is suddenly reaching out towards his friend even as he is growing from normal sized to large, his reach thus extending unbidden but perhaps needed. Sam's hand grabs for Muir's. Or his foot. Or his trunk. Anything to try to snag the big fella before he splats or impales or gets lost to the depths entirely... At the same time Sam's other hand grabs for the stalagmites, trying to grab one to help balance himself in case he does catch Muir, now wanting the heft fella to just drag him down with him.
As Sam grows in size and steadies himself against the stalagmites he grabs on to the falling loxodon with ease, negating Muir's momentum enough so that his path of travel isn't directly onto the spikes, Muir would have fallen to the ground safely.
But instead, at the same exact moment that Sam makes contact with Muir, Gewyn appears over the dark hole having teleported next to Muir his gravity already inverted sideways toward the back wall of this level and away from the spikes. Gewyn sails over the spikes and feet first crashes into Muir, hefting the loxodon's weight even further toward Sam causing both Sam and Muir to go ass over teakettle landing, harmlessly on the flat ground of this level in a heap on top of one another. Gewyn skids to a halt next to them, crisis averted.
(Sam with a 25 str save and Gewyn with a 23 Wis save, fantastic rolls!)
"Just have to put on a show, don't you?" Elthana scolds the three of them, but is in reality grateful everyone is alright. She looks around to see where they have ended up.
Vin flies over to the others and lands his broomstick.
”Everyone ok? I was a little worried for a moment. Good catch Sam. And nice assist Gewyn”, he enquires before concentrating on summoning Neferox to his side.
"Contractually obligated most of the time, yes," Gewyn replies nonchalantly to Elthana as he brushes invisible dust off his sleeves. "Though this one was free."
Sum grumbles and colorfully tells Muir to get his dark hole off of him, shoving the Loxodon away and extricating himself for the jumped mass as he does so.
"I had everything in hand," Sam says, climbing to his feet and dusting himself off. He starts to stand up tall and then stops suddenly, jerking down in reaction to assuming he's about to hit his head. He usually does not enlarge indoors... "But I can't do this often so be careful from here on out!"
Muir gets up anf brushes himself off "Apologies everyone. I just lost my handle and down I went. Thank you both for saving my life. I was not ready to become some stew for Kobolds"
As the group is speaking they take in this new level, the signs of hasty abandonment of the room, calls to question what happened here. The massive hole in the middle is now only 50ft across having gotten incrementally smaller as the group descended. Where did the hole come from?
There is still a way to go to get to the bottom, this level doesn't look disturbed enough to have had kobolds in it recently, the moss and mould growth on the damp walls having been left to freely accumulate.
Then everything goes pitch black. Even those with dark vision cannot see, a terrible screech echoes from above and a movement in the air near elthana betrays some kind of attack happening.
(Miss, then 23 to hit for 12 and make a dc16 strength or athletics check to avoid being grappled)
As Elthana is unceremoniously swiped at in the pitch darkness, the other four plus the newly summoned Neferox hear a gurgling belch come from the opposite side wall, (each make a con save dc16 or take 15 necrotic damage, 7 on a save)
The group prepares themselves to face their unseen attackers, and Griff tells over from hovering in the hole "what is happening, where you are standing it is now being dark!"
Vin is suddenly blinded and assaulted by a wave of necrotic energy that is accompanied by a loud gurgling belching sound. He reaches out to grasp the newly appeared Neferox to ground himself, and after a few moments shouts to the others.
"Nef sees two creatures as large as she is, but there must be a third that has summoned this darkness! She will try and sniff them out", he says and readies a pair of blasts of eldritch energy in case Nef finds something or if not for the one that belched at them.
Neferox scans the vicinity, seeing perfectly through the dark but also trying to sniff out the third creature.
Vin Con Save: 2+4=6 Neferox Con Save: 8+6=14 Vin Action: Ready two eldritch blast attacks at the creature Neferox points out or the belcher if she doesn't Neferox Action: Perception (with advantage as usual) - (18, 5) + 8= 26 Vin Reaction: Eldritch Blast 1 (disadvantage): To Hit: (12,20)+8=20, Damage: 9+5=14 [force] Eldritch Blast 2 (disadvantage): To Hit: (8,11)+8=16, Damage: 7+5=12 [force]
Nef sniffs around and finds the location of the third creature, unfortunately it is occupying the floor above and is out of range for vin's blasts, reassessing his attack the creature which spewed some kind of necrotic energy over the group shrieks as vin's blasts hit it instead.
Elthana feels freezing tendrils begin to wrap around her from above and manages to strike back, but only one of her fists make contact with something, her other attacks seem to glide through patches of cold air instead.
"Duck!"Sam growls to the others and swings for the fences with his maul, going by sound and hoping he doesn't take out one of his own... Unless it's Neferox.
First Maul Attack: 13 to hit for 25 damage Second Maul Attack: 22 to hit for 25 damage (one die roll rerolled due to Great Weapon Fighting) Plus 4 damage due to Giant's Might Both attacks rolled with Dis due to Darkness Due to the Crusher feat, Sam can move anything one size larger or less 5' with an attack that does Bludgeoning. Sam is currently large. So unless whatever he hit is larger than Huge (I believe) he pushes it 5' towards where Sam believes the edge to be.
Sam then uses his Bonus Action to regain his second wind and heal 9 pts...
Sam's first swing finds nothing but air, then his second swing finds... Something.
Sam feels his maul slow and connect but not fully, as if he successfully hit something that wasn't entirely all there. Drawing his maul back it feels freezing cold in his hand and the shiver runs up his arm, accompanied by an ear splitting scream from whatever it is that he inflicted some kind of damage upon.
Muir unable to see in the dark on a regular day, especially can't see in this magical darkness. He thinks to himself that it would be better to aid his companions rather than wildly attacking in the dark. He casts Dispel Magic on the magical darkness.
The darkness dissipates, and what is left in front of the group is a two creatures that looks like a writhing mass of tattered rags and tendrils loosely grasping around a long thin skeletal frame. The creatures float in the air, the facsimiles of their faces covered and a haze of decay radiates off of the things like a visible stench.
Gewyn swallows nervously and draws two weapons. His shortsword in one hand, and his sickle in the other. He cautiously slashes with one and then the other.
Gewyn's short sword goes wide of it's mark, but the sickle strike sinks into the inky tendrils of it's incorporeal target.
The wraith above Elthana tightens it's grasp around her. Constructing her in its tendrils, she gasps for air and cannot help but inhale some of the haze of stench now surrounding her (25 to hit for 9 bludgeoning, also make Dc15 con save or be poisoned until the start of the wraiths next turn)
Above, up on the ceiling the third wraith appears, forcing it's shrouded head through the solid floor using some kind of phase like ability, it speaks some warbled words filled with malice and everything goes silent for the group, the wind ceases to howl up through the hole in the building, the other wraiths cease to shriek though their mouths still move, and no one can hear themselves moving or speaking. The ceiling wraith backs out of sight once more it's face retreating into the solid ceiling.
The third wraith that the majority of the group have been beating down, moves up floating over the group, (still within melee reach but not on the ground), it lashes put at Sam and Muir specifically,
(To hit Muir, 18 for 18 bludgeoning damage)
(To hit Sam, 23 for 12 bludgeoning and make a dc16 strength check to avoid grapple)
(Everyone within 5ft of a wraith (basically everyone) must make a Dc15 con save or be poisoned until the start of the wraiths next turn)
Finding himself deafened, nauseous and right below one of the Wraiths that Neferox described, Vin turns to the hound. A moment or so passes before he nods, jumps onto his [Tooltip Not Found] and suddenly disappears.
He flies out towards the hole and up, waiting until he can hear again, and looking for sign of the third wraith on the floor above.
Vin turn details in below spoiler:
Con Save: 4+4=8 Special: Poisoned until start of wraiths next turn Free Action: Telepathic communication with Neferox Movement: Mount broomstick Action: One with Shadows Movement: Head as far as he can up and out to the gap, as he cannot be seen should not incur an attack of opportunity (unless they have other means to see him)
As soon as Vin disappears, Neferox springs into action, twice jumping up and attempting to clamp her jaws around the wraith above them and knock it to the ground.
Neferox turn details in below spoiler:
Con Save: 19+6=25 Free Action: Telepathic communication with Vin Action: Attack wraith above them Bite 1: To Hit: 8+4=12, Damage: 6+3+3=12 [piercing]. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. Bite 2: To Hit: 10+4=14, Damage: 6+2+3=11 [piercing]. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Muir unable to see much in normal darkness as well remembers that here were muchrooms growing all over along with the moss. He takes his staff and drives it into the ground casting awaken from his staff. The little mushrooms comes to life and begin to swarm the wraith that has grappled Elthana and another swarm comes to life attacking the wraith that is fighting Sam and Muir. As a bonus action Muir pulls the hood of his cloak over his head and hides.
Elthana Swarm Attack: 10 Damage: 7
Sam Swarm Attack: 18 Damage: 9
