Sam insight check on Griff regarding him not knowing who may have used the portal: 16
Assuming Sam believes him Sam unties Griff. “Hmph, well I still need answers but I’m not shocked you know nothing,” Sam says. “Behave. Cause problems and you’re on your own.”
Happy to see they were starting to get on the move, Elthana takes back a little control of the situation. "Sam, you and that guard ride that one, Gewyn, you and that guard ride that one. Vin, you and Muir ride that one and Hector and I will ride this one." She points out a smeagle for each.
Turning to Griff, her emotions are torn. "Griff, what puts you in the best situation? Should we leave you here so you can get back home? I don't want to get you in a worse place you are in now, you have done so much to help us."
"we still cannot let him go..." Hector interrupts as Elthana is asking Griff for his opinion and Sam is releasing his bindings. "The guard comes with us, Restrained. It is the safest option unless you wish us to kill him, I gave you the choice." Hector's eyes flash a glare as he warns.
"As for travel we have the sleds. The guard can occupy one, whilst your large hound can occupy the other. Our supplies were already sent off when we heard you descending"
"Oh, are we still enemies?" Sam asks curious. "I thought we had come to a bit of an understanding... But if you are still threatening the lives of our group and giving orders and such we can get right back to the fighting." Sam straightens up to his full height and looks around to the closest targets. "It's what I'm built for anyway..."
"I have to say, that is not normally what you expect from a dog sled", Vin says looking from the sled to Neferox trying to make light of the situation. "I don't think there is much choice though", he explains to the hell hound who is obviously not happy.
He then turns his attention to Griff, "We'll do our best to keep you safe, Griff".
He looks across to Sam, "I am not happy either, but if Griff is not restrained he can just fly off, so I get the need for that". "There should be no reason to gag him though, right?", he then asks of Hector.
"Fly off and do what?" Sam asks in retort. "Tell people of this location when Hector already admits it is an open secret? Keeping him bound but bringing him with us just opens him up to more knowledge, perhaps some less known. Which if they aren't willing to free him now just makes them more unwilling to free him later. Which means they're likely planning to just murderize him. And if they're planning that they're going to have to go through me because the only one who gets to do that IS me... So as I said, we can get back to the fighting here and now or we can let this guy walk on his own..."
"Tell Akiin, that is what they are afraid of", Vin replies quietly, not wishing to get into an argument with Sam but disagreeing with his ultimatum.
He looks around to Elthana, Muir and Gewyn, wondering where they stand.
"I don't want to fight any more. We have been given a chance to get what we came for. Maybe if Griff sees what is on the Broken Isle with his own eyes, he might actually learn something that changes his outlook on all this", he says tentatively.
"Bringing him will just give him more to tell Akiin," Sam says in reply to Vin, trying to be calm and patient despite how adamant he felt upon the issue. "And a bound man sees only hate and fear. Only a free man can truly have his eyes opened."
“These are both good points…Hector you have us flying into Kobold territory, followers of the Raven Queen and not Lumithor? Are you friends with all kobolds? We do not wish harm on Griff” Muir says as he gets closer to the bird
Elthana fears a standoff is happening. She turns to Hector, "Please, is there a way Griff can get home to his family? If we bring him with us I fear you will not let him go. Or am I wrong about that?"
There is only so much they can do here. She hates this, but the fate of Marblestead is weighing heavily and they need to get moving. She steps up to the two headed creature, in awe of what it is.. wondering what else lived on this plane.
"You're quite right Sam, the only thing you seem to be good for is fighting. Which is why it doesn't surprise me that when a situation calls for thinking you're a problem.
This bird..." Hector begins to raise his voice now whilst gesturing to Griff, who in turn spits blood at Hector's feet in distain, "...has been brainwashed his entire life to see the worst in a race pf people, to enact violence and genocide against them. He cannot change until he has seen with his own eyes what we are and how we live. But his words and actions tell me exactly how much of a danger he would be to bring to the broken isle freely. Which is why I gave you the choice, you either bind him now, or you kill him.
But don't stand there puffing your chest as if you haven't just assisted in killing four of my people and then had the gall to ask for my help saving yours! Now make your damn choice!"
Hector turns his back on Sam and addresses the others, more calmly, "you have my word, no harm will come to this guard... as long as he sees that the kobolds are not the threat that he has been brainwashed to think they are. He could be so much more, if he could just see how wrong his superiors are."
"You're people attacked. Don't blame me because it was a fatal mistake on their part," Sam spits back.
"My choice is that Griff is going nowhere all bound up like a pig on the spit," Sam continues after regaining his calm a bit. As he said this draws a handaxe and starts using it to cut Griff bindings as so far all that he had done was un-gag him.
"We offered to help you in exchange for your help... But if you want none of it then we shall get what we need some other way." Sam says and assuming he was not stopped from cutting Griff ropes, Sam proceeds to return Griff's weapons to him.
Gewyn tensely watches the faces all around... but makes no move to stop Sam from undoing Griff's bindings. "Politics." He says simply. "It's always politics. We've been lied to by one side, attacked by the other. There is bad blood between the factions. But here's the thing. It doesn't matter. Not to us. We are not embroiled in your fight, and we are not going to get sucked in. We are here for our own agenda, and whoever helps us, we return the favour. Whoever stands in our way, Sam removes from our way. Griff has helped us already. Our favour to him is incoming. No avoiding that. It would be great if we can all resolve this peacefully. It would be wonderful if Griff manages to avoid stoking the flames of a conflict that will burn everyone involved, all while a greater threat seems to be growing within your realm..." Gewyn gets a cold look in his eye as his hand rests on the pommel of his sword. "But we are not participating in your fight, and we will not be stopped from doing what we are here to do. That's politics"
Vin takes a step back as all the shouting starts, unsure what he should do. He didn't want Griff to be hurt, but knew Griff would not show leniency were the roles reversed, so why should Hector.
He breathes a little sigh of relief as Gewyn speaks, articulating exactly how he too felt.
"Well said, Gewyn", he says appreciatively.
He takes a steadying breath and turns to Griff who Sam is untying, "Griff, if you agree to Hector's terms, then you can see for yourself. It may not change anything, but what have you got to lose? We are your friends, and we will protect you, but don't make us sacrifice our chance to save our people by stoking the flames, as Gewyn so eloquently put it".
Elthana's eyes go wide as things escalate further. She's about to stop Sam from untying Griff but then Gewyn and Vin step to Sam's side and figures a fight amongst themselves wasn't going to make things any better. "Griff, we will get you home, just listen to us and try to have an open mind as we move on to the Broken Isles. Please." She finds herself pleading with the aarakocra as she finds herself afraid of where this was going to go.
Turning to Hector, "Let him go unbinded, we will make sure he doesn't hurt anyone else. And yes, we are asking for help.. so many lives are at stake. Please." She's never been one to negotiate, but here she was.
She does ready herself to grapple Griff if he doesn't listen to Gewyn or Vin....
"I am not being stoking flames" Griff grunts, "I am following orders, but you are being right... I will not fight and if their terms are being that I am bound then so be it. All I am asking is not the gag too. I am being already dead either way" he resigns himself as Gewyn and vin's words start making sense to him.
Hector mumbles something as Sam takes his handaxe out and tries to unbind the rest of Griff. Suddenly Sam cannot move a muscle and Hector turns to the rest glancing more at Elthana than anyone else, "he goes bound, that is the condition. If not, the deal is off. You can find your own way to the broken isles to ask to desecrate a martyr's corpse..."
Hector begins setting his stuff up on one of the birds and attaching a sled to his. Both of the dragonborn also begin preparations, one of which includes setting up a comfortable seat inside the second sled for Neferox.
Griff looks to Sam and nods solemnly, "if it is the last thing I do, I can at least being helping you guys yes? I think you are all in a bad enough position having to be relying on their kind for help. The best I can be doing is stopping causing you trouble." As Griff finishes saying this to Sam, the half-orc regains control of his muscles just as one of the dragonborn begin leading Griff away to the first sled.
"We have roughly a 16 hour flight ahead of us." Hector declares as he holds a hand out to Elthana offering assistance to mount his Smeagle.
Vin approaches Griff just before he is led off. "Thank you", he says putting a hand on the aarakocra's shoulder. He glances at Sam for a moment, not quite knowing what has happened, but hoping the situation is resolved now that Griff has accepted being bound.
He then starts to lead Neferox over to the sled that is being made ready for her. "I will of course be riding the smeagle that is pulling Neferox's sled", he announces, looking around to see who else would be riding with him.
A wide grin is quick to Gewyn's face, and he claps both Griff and Hector on their shoulders, saying "Great! Glad we can all be mature about this. Shall we have some music while we travel?" Gewyn skips over towards Vin's smeagle, drawing his pipes out and blowing imaginary dust off of them with a soft whistle.
With Elthana and hector on one Smeagle and griff being held in the sled. Gewyn and vin occupy the second Smeagle with Neferox safely secured in their sled. Of the two sled-less Smeagles left, both dragonborn take up a position on each one, leaving places for Sam and Muir to ride along with a dragonborn each.
Muir not paying attention to what's happening around him is intrigued by the 2 headed bird. He studies the bird looking at its beak and talons to see if it reminds him of a bird back home
