"This guy seems to know everything, not sure why he's asking us anything," Sam notes.
"Speaking of, I almost forgot..." Sam says before rooting around in his stuff for a moment. He comes up with a small bag, scant bigger than a pouch. Sam tosses it lightly over to Vin. "The witch in Trundlesten wanted me to give that to you. She said she owed it to ya..."
"Anyway, we done here?" he turns and asks the annoying dwarf. "You said you don't have the authority to seize anything, and we're certainly not hanging anything over to the likes of you... So move along and let's get this show on the road."
Escan looks Gewyn up and down once more, "what's your preference, I can make and upgrade and I have access to all kinds of stuff, if I'm honest once you lot are announced, it would look good for the 'cade if some of you had our branded metals on you".
Escan doesn't even look at Sam any more as he replies, "I never said I didn't have the authority to confiscate, I'll confiscate that smug smile off your face in a minute, you hard headed shitbag."
Gewyn straightens a bit in surprise, not having expected an genuine response. "Well, um... I wouldn't mind something a bit flashier. A bit more style. Cutting myself with a dirty sickle doesn't exactly fit the Gewyn brand." He exchanges a look with Vin as if to confirm that this guy was okay.
“I scraped tougher dwarves than you off my shoe just yesterday,” Sam says, grin firmly in place. “You’re welcome to start a thing if you want… but otherwise I’m bored and done here.”
"I'll see what I can do, I'll decommission this one" Escan says nodding to Gewyn as he takes the sickle and attaches it to his back.
Looking over to Sam, Escan smiles, "however much I'd love to beat you black and blue, you're about to go and be presented to the council, and I don't need that kinda rep with them, but come to the cavalcade once you're all settled, there's an arena there."
Escan opens his mouth to say something else, but he is interrupted by the door opening, and Elthana walking in. "AHH here she is, right, I'm going to need to see any magic item you picked up on your journey, make sure nothing is cursed or too dangerous..."
Elthana looks into the room and sees all her friends in there, hears the dwarf ask for any magic items picked up and shrugs. Heading over to the table by the dwarf she starts adding her items to the table saying, "Griff is going to stay in the treasury until they can get him safely home. Better than causing mayhem as he would be very noticed in the city. You guys all finished with this? I don't know about you all, but I could use a drink."
On the table she unceremoniously dumps the disgusting flesh bag, black leather apron that is always dripping blood, takes off a ring and adds that to the mess, pulls out a pouch that they figured out had necrotic resin in it, and then takes off the necklace of the deer head and places that a bit more gingerly on the table.
" I think that should do it.. oh wait" and she takes off the bracers and adds that to the bunch.
Escan watches Elthana enter and appears to be listening when she mentions Griff, but says nothing further about her absence.
"ok" the dwarf begins, his glowing eyes bulging at the amount of items on the table, he cracks his fingers and dives in, "amulet of health, looks to be druidic in nature, ring of protection, standard enchantment and a useful one at that, the bracers are fine. That pouch is foul but not magical at all. This though..." he picks up the apron and sniffs it a little, "yup, demonic, it's a butcher's bib, nasty piece of work and you'd think it's cursed but you'd be wrong." He then moves onto the bag. With a frown, he looks at Elthana and then back to the bag, then back to Elthana, "there's somethings you just leave alone... This appears to be a soul bag, it's useless to anyone but the person who crafted it, and it's made from the skin and flesh of a sacrifice, this is being confiscated and destroyed."
“Arenas are for shows,” Sam sneers. “But I understand you wanting to go hide in a hole, it’s what dwarves do…”
Sam is interrupted from further insulting the man, his genealogy and his entire species by Elthana walking in. He watches and listens and pokes Vin in the ribs with his elbow (gently) and whispers “Odd he’s not curious who Griff is, eh?” but then pays it no more notice… until:
“Which now, half pint! You done said earlier you weren’t authorized to be seizing items from us and you won’t be without permission!” Sam insists. “If the Lady Elthana wishes you to take out her trash then that is right and proper but you’ll not be taking anything without her permission…”
"items of this nature are well within my jurisdiction, and therefore I don't need the go ahead from the council to take it, it's in your best interests that I do." With that he opens a bag at his side and drops the flesh bag into it, closing the latch and swinging his bag behind him, with Gewyn's sickle. "Now then, as long as there's nothing else I've been told to notify the guard to escort you through ti the council chamber, are you ready?"
Sam puts a hand on Escan’s shoulder to halt him a moment and bends down to his eye level. “Hope you’re right, li’l man. ‘Cause when the Council inquires about what we’ve done and been through they’ll want some show and tell… and you’re name will be mentioned for having confiscated the personal items of the Champions of Northmorrah…”
While Sam’s one hand stills the dwarf a moment and he keeps his eyes locked with the other man’s, Sam’s free hand quickly but subtly reaches out and attempts to dip into the bag and retrieve the flesh bag…
“Anyway, been a real pleasure making your acquaintance it has!” Sam says and steps away and to the left of the dwarf. “We’ll meet again, I’m sure…”
Muir raises an eye brow at Griff voluntarily staying in the treasury. "Uhh is that wise to leave him alone there with folks he doesn't know? What happened that he couldn't get home? The portal is there....This doesn't seem right."
Escan Ironhand exits the room, not particularly happy with the way things went. As Elthana picks her stuff back up and packs it away, minus the flesh bag, there is a light knocking at the door, and a guards voice resonates through, "The council are seated, whenever you are all ready"
"Ixnay on the Ortalpay in front of the itchybay arfdway!" Sam snarls at Muir after quickly snatching his hand out of the dwarfs bag and turning to Muir in an attempt to hide the action. Sam shakes his hand as if it's hurt, it is definitely empty.
"Or not," Sam adds as the dwarf leaves. "It's not like our dear Escan Ironfoot doesn't already know... But it is an odd choice by the Griff, are we..." But Sam is interrupted by the knock on the door and the guards asking if they are ready. "Umm... are we ready?"
Elthana looks questioningly at her friends after putting everything back on, including her necklace and ring. "What...what was going on here?"
"Griff will be just fine. He is actually an esteemed guest apparently. He is a general in the Akiin's forces from where he is from, some djin? I don't know, but he is going to get all he needs before heading through." Looking specifically at Muir, "Why are you suspicious of everything? I didn't say he couldn't get home, it is just not automatic."
“Just as well he’s not gone yet, we didn’t really say proper goodbyes, did we?” Sam asks. “This way we can visit him before he departs…”
“Nothing going on here ‘cept the Calvacade friend of Vin’s checking us for cooties. I was my lovable self, as always… Sorry he took that fleshy thing. I tried to snatch it back for you as he was leaving but his bag nearly snatched my hand! Must be something hungry in there…” Sam explains.
Getting back into the city one has to go through the poor outskirts and it reminds Vin he's come a long way. Despite how much he blames himself he is able to take a bit of this in and realize... he's come a long way. He tries to spot familiar faces in the streets or in the urchins that try to peddle wares or earn a bit of food. Like when they left Marblestead, Vin gives out a few coins to the kids that come up. Careful not to give too much for that would make them a target but a few coppers to get a full meal for a day or two. He wishes he could give them more and help fix their situation but even Vin knows that's not an easy task. He's just not smart enough to solve it. That doesn't mean he doesn't try. Whatever the case, he was feeling better now they were back home. He wondered how the school was doing and if any of his classmates have also graduated while he was gone. He also wondered... well... maybe he should talk to Gewyn first. He'll need some advice for that. So while they are traveling through the city Vin asks "Gewyn, later, think I could ask your advice on something?"
Vin was starting to build himself back up and get excited for this party. Maybe when he's recognized as a hero he can make some real changes. He's not sure what that'll look like though... he's not sure what he would even change. He was delighted to see another one of his heroes and mentors. Escan. He doesn't get many opportunities to chat with them what with his classes and schooling but now it was different. He was a graduate and although it wasn't perfect and he still blames himself for a lot. He could recognize he did a lot of good at Hokum too. Proudly Vin introduced one of the heroes of the Cavalcade and it was explained about the checking in and expectations of magical items. Vin without question presented stuff found to be checked out. When Escan told him to repair the enchantments of the broom Vin nodded and said "Thank you Master Ironhand. I'll make sure to get it reinforced as soon as I can." Vin gives a nervous bow that totally looks awkward and it's clear the young man has a bit of hero worship going on. When Gewyn looks to Vin about trusting them Vin nods
They try to stand straight and seem at attention as they give the utmost respect to Escan. So Vin is entirely embarrassed by the verbal exchange between Sam and Escan. He tries very hard not to be noticed as this begins to happen. Vin doesn't even understand why Sam was so determined to be rude and disrespectful to one of the heroes of the cavalcade. Escan even offered to duel him and Sam just threw more insults like it was his goal to be as disrespectful as possible. Vin wanted to die there. It may be irrational, as obviously Vin didn't say these things, but the boy feels like Escan won't give him the time of day anymore. The look of disappointment and frustration evident to the half-elf. Whatever confidence he was beginning to build up seems to be on shaky ground after this exchange.
When Escan leaves Vin lets out a sigh or distress and anxiety he looks over to Gewyn and whispers tot hem "Oh... that went so badly. I really wanted to impress him. Do you think he'll be mad at me too? I couldn't think of anything to say during that."
When talk turns to Griff Vin echos Elthana and says "This is Marblestead. I'm sure Griff will be fine. I'm glad he's getting some help on getting home. As for us.... I'm so nervous now. Are we going to be put on a stage and stuff? Lets go see the council though."
Neferox just hovers behind keeping an eye on things for now.
Gewyn claps a hand on Vin's shoulder and whispers, "Well no one ended up with hands around their throat, so they could have gone worse. Besides, if he's the kind of guy worth impressing, I'm sure he won't hold Sam's actions against you. I'm sorry I couldn't step in and smooth things over. I didn't want him looking too closely at me, because I don't know what all he could see. But I'll certainly end you an ear after this council meeting. Whatever it is you've got on your mind, I'll hear you out."
Vin looks relieved as Gewyn points out the obvious they whisper back "Right. Right. I'm being silly. You're right. Thanks Gewyn." Nef gives a gruff woof towards Gewyn and Vin smiles as he says "She says Sam was just asserting his dominance." Nef then adds another gruff and Vin has to stifle the laugh as he says "She thinks I won't learn confidence or anything useful from you. I'm already counting on your help after this meeting. We can show her you're someone that can help me a lot too." Vin looks back at Nef who turns her head sideways and grins like she doesn't believe Gewyn could teach Vin anything useful. With that Vin and Nef is ready to meet the council.
