Before anyone can say anything Sam immediately accosts the integrity of one of the heroes of the Cavalcade. Vin is horrified. He thought it would be done and over. he was already very nervous about presenting the feats they accomplished but to start out with declaring he was stolen from by a reputed hero? Vin knew he wasn't a part of the adventuring guild and wasn't aware of the standard procedure that protects folks from dangerous items that many adventurers bring back. To Vin is seemed like Sam was asking for special treatment. To be exempt from what the cavalcade do to keep the city safe. Who was going to argue that a soul eating bag made from flesh that demons use was a good thing to allow by? Vin just couldn't understand why this made Sam so mad. He watches him go as Nef seems to draw the young man's attention and Vin sighs. Then focuses back on the topic at hand. It seems the folks here know that Sam doesn't speak for them all but still... Sam always seemed so loyal, steadfast, and strong. Vin hoped that he could find a way to make amends. Vin took a lot of courage from how steady and sure Sam always acted.
As talk gets to the fruits and the council says that it makes mindless slaves Vin already knows they are assuming too much of the fruit and adds in "It's not one fruit that makes a mindless thrall. It's an overdose of the fruit. However, that can be forced onto people. We saw that in Hokum. The fruit were being corrupted and twisted with very dark blood magic as Gewyn said which might change how they act further. I talked to a lot of the people about what happened before Hokum was attacked. At first those who ate them just seemed more agreeable and cooperative. it sounded similar to a charm person spell in details but in a form of food. That kind of subtle influence is probably even more dangerous. They could be used to gather information, get into secure locations and more without the person affected knowing they are doing wrong. It's possible that, before the attack on hokum by the hag Rynwell and her forces that, she used the fruit to convince those who ate them to scout and get information to make their attack to ensure as few people could escape as possible before their attack. Once they had captured the town, they used the fruit to make them mindless servants that couldn't take actions on their own. who knows what the new batches would do."
Nef seems to woof quietly a bit towards Vin, then Vin then looks to Vance Meldane and says "You should be more worried then most. It could be the fruits are being used to take over positions of power and if it starts in Jasmina that could mean they are aiming for your position. It's definitely worth the resources as it would likely be an act that protects you. Enslaving the mind is more a brute force tactic and those affected are very obvious as they lose even the ability to feed themselves. They act directly to the orders given and that is it. They often lack a semblance of emotion as they also lose the ability to express themselves or to care. Subtly influencing everyone that eats them to be more agreeable, that is almost more scary to think of. I don't think it's a waste of resources to make sure folks are not being tricked. It's possible something else came from the portal that is using the fruit to influence things here and in other towns. I can provide a dried sample of the fruit as well as detailed drawing and description of the fruits for finding them."
Vin leaves the rest of the explanation to the others. He's more invested in helping folks and making sure no one ever becomes a victim of those fruits again. He knows he's not the best when it comes to politics and doesn't want to say the wrong thing. He still feels they are on edge after Sam's outburst and feels the others do a better job of that. However he will give his opinion if asked. it seems to Vin that Tibus is directing their question to Gewyn though so he waits for their reply.
Muir lets Gewyn and vin handle the fruit business. Their explanations seem reasonable to Muir. He waits for them to finish before answering the question about the clerics. "The clerics believe that Ebb's, the one that started with this group, visions are from Hermes. His visions are of a portal opening in Lyvander. They are trying to stop this from happening with all of their power. I wouldn't call this a grand pilgrimage as it looks more like a militant pilgrimage. They are preparing to stop this portal by any means necessary. I have not received word from Master Gore in Hokum since we left and I sent 2 messages to him. Their leader was overheard saying they needed to eliminate Gore so they could do what they needed to with the portal in Hokum. They also wanted to take the rebuilding efforts, money, leadership and what seemed to me, the town, away from the hokum citizens."
"well said young Vin, and very informative, I'll have the legion on alert for anyone acting in such suspicious fashion and our concerns will be investigated " Tibus answers putting concise end to the topic of the fruits.
"These reports on the clerics. Master Muir, you make it seem as if they have commenced a military takeover of Hokum itself, and though their actions in the past have only been to help and bring about an end to all conflicts, their recent secrecy and abandonment of positions here in Marblestead, leads me to question their motives.
Their concerns with a portal opening in Lyvander, these visions, I assume that they are destructive and ominous. Leading them to actively seek out answers. Apart from their attempting to take over the reconstructive efforts in Hokum and your overhearing of elimination plans, did anyone observe any actual violence or propensity for such hostility from them? Also which members of the clerics were there? Was high priest Holm in their numbers?"
Vin speaks up at this as he was the one who scryed on Ebb and overheard the plot. He speaks up a bit nervously and says "I... I don't mean to disagree with Muir as I think not being able to hear from Master Gore so shortly after we left is enough reason to be concerned. No one said eliminate. It was I who overheard Ebb. I was concerned for him because he seemed so sacred. He was very kind to me when we began our journey so I looked in on Ebb and that was when I overheard his words. Ebb was talking with someone and they began by asking that someone how something could be useful. It seemed like something elaborate was explained to Ebb and then Ebb replied that Master Gore will not approve and will be a problem. I could not hear the other voice unfortunately. I suspect they had magical protection against that sort of thing. Ebb then sounded panicked as he hurriedly replied to this person as he begged to speak with Gore first... They sounded scared. It is unknown if it was High Priest Holm or another high ranking official of the church by the name Te'louim, who we did see in Hokum and seemed to be the one directing Ebb. Ebb said that high Priest Holm returned to Lyvander and enacted a grand pilgrimage though."
Elthana is impressed with how quickly Tibus is moving through the issues as they arise and hopes this apparent inquisition will be over soon. She's impressed by her friends as they answer the council's questions to the best of their ability, so quickly and succinctly, she has nothing to add.
"it sounds like you need to improve communication within your group here" Judge Tibus begins as he makes some notes, "it appears that within the order of Hermes there is some disorder, This Ebb and his visions, to be taken so seriously he must have more than just the ear of Holm, in what capacity was he present in Hokum? We need to assess how much of a threat these clerics may be. If more forces are needed in Hokum to safeguard our people and our resources, I understand that heightened zeal within ranks of the devour can lead to unpredictable outcomes, please speak on your own first hand assessments"
Muir decides to go first "Vin's account is correct. I do not trust the clerics for their attempted bullying in Hokum. We as a group stood our ground and supported the Mayor of Hokum. The clerics were hellbent on getting to that portal. I am unaware of what they wanted to do. Their vigilant attitude and unwillingness to work with anyone in Hokum left a sour taste in my mouth, which is of course on top of the conversation Vin heard. They believe or are at the very least are using Ebb's "vision from Hermes" as a rallying cry. Keep in mind their 6th pillar Do not seek to take one’s life but when it is necessary for survival then do so with respect and solidarity, no matter the foe or prey.....no matter the for or prey......I do not trust them"
"Our communication within our group is just fine." Elthana states without any emotion. She doesn't want to rally up any arguments or anything, but wanted it stated. "For a group of people from completely different factions, having never met before and assigned a task that proved much more than originally laid out, our communication, and how we rely on each other is beyond expectations."
"What Muir has stated about the clerics, I would second that. It didn't sit right with any of us, Ebb in general appeared worried. Whether it was from his visions or from his entourage, I can't speak to that. But he did seem to feel very strongly that something was wrong in Lyvander."
Judge Tibus looks down upon Elthana as she makes her statement, as if assessing something. Before disregarding whatever he was thinking and moving to more collaborative efforts, "I see, well... I also had no idea that the keepers of the woods were so well versed in clerical pillars. Anyway, I assume there is still some of the legion's forces left to assist in the organisation of the town along with the guard that have been sent along with the supply convoy, their orders once on site at the town are to regroup, rebuild and assist the townsfolk by re-establishing the regular guard duties as quickly as possible, with this in mind I would like any thoughts and suggestions from you all who have experienced the state of the town first hand, and the effects the cleric presence there is having, before I turn the suggestions over to the other council members."
Muir looks to the others before answering "I had ample time to read up on their history and their pillars while they...I am not sure right the right word is.....kept me as their guest at their compound. As far as their presence in Hokum it makes the mayor uneasy."
Gewyn's cocky smile broadens at Elthana's quick retort about their in-group communication. "Well, regarding the state of the town, the physical and structural damage is significant, as is the mess. There is a lot of blood, much of it belonging to the residents. Both the survivors and the survived. What the city needs, by my estimation, are the resources and labour provided by the Legion.
The people, on the other hand, likely need wine, food, and distraction. The days ahead for them will be hard. Their homes and places of comfort have been turned into sites of horror and trauma. Though they may have reclaimed the town physically, the emotional scars of what happened there will likely leave the place tainted. They will need to bury their dead, scrub the filth of nightmares and blood of loved ones from walls and floorboards, care for and bear the weight of their injured and traumatized, and work from dawn till dusk repairing their town. On top of all that they will be worried about the quality of their fields after the corruption and carnage. They need music and color and light. That is my assessment."
"ok I think I'll open this up for suggestions from the council members" Tibus says as he takes in the information and looks around the room.
"If there is to be another supply wagon we need more information from the efforts already put forth. The most concerning thing right now is not the rebuilding efforts it is the clerics presence and unknown motives, I suggest sending spies and having reconnaissance on the comings and goings of the clerics in that mountain." Sergor Hamilton chimes in.
"Young Gewyn is correct, upon the next supply, should one be necessary, I will send what intoxicants and entertainment that we can muster. Their time of suffering should be over and along with practical efforts, Hokum should be supported with our merriment at the success of the counter attack." Vance meldane adds.
"They are predominantly farmers and fishermen, they are my people, and as much as it pains me, the workers faction has already sent more than we can manage, we are still suffering a hit to our fisheries after the seas became too infested with monsters to continue seafaring trade, adding to that the rising food prices..." Jimmy Connelly sighs, "With that in mind, any sparing funds that other factions can offer will be gratefully accepted, and I'm in support of reconnaissance and information gathering if needs be, assessing how much help is needed will be key in the coming months."
"I would be willing to send a couple of adventuring parties, to support the guard if the clerics become resistant to letting the guard resume duties." Lord Unvale Hemiran states sharply.
Master Goodall for the most part has remained silent during the proceedings, but at this point speaks up, "my druids are cast all over the continent helping, I can communicate with those closest by and have them support Hokum in any way they can. I will also contact master Gore as soon as possible, he is an experienced and skilled druid, any attempt on his life will be one that is fraught with issues. He has already taken up position as custodial and protector of the portal, spying on the clerics for me and for us, I would ask that you support this position and facilitate the druids taking the lead on this."
.
The proceedings go back and forth for a while as the council discuss the logistics and formulate a plan with objectives and deadlines, summons for reports and limitations put in place. Before Tibus brings the subject to a close with another rap of the gavel. "I suppose we should deal with the elephant in the room, no offence... This council has deemed the abandonment of a council position and refusal of summons by one priest Holm, renders his position avaliable. The subsequent news of Ebb's abandoning his position in your group only served to consolidate this. After that we were approached by Master Goodall here and after many meetings we decided that this is a prime opportunity for her to step out of the woods and unite out forces, a decision which was helped by the fact that Master Muir aided this group and, unrequested, became an integral part of it. I'm happy to announce officially to you all, and it should come as no surprise, that at the winter solstice festival, Master Goodall's councillor position with be made official to the public, and as such Master Muir will be presented as part of this team, as though that was the plan from the beginning.
We have also secured a place of residence for you all, together, we believe that for this show of unity to be believed in ernest, you should be visible to the common citizen, and so the old headquarters of the clerics of Hermes, has been reclaimed by the treasury and remodelled into a home for you all. The Oakhand family has been hard at work, and there will be chance for you to use the remaining space within your residence as a profitable business, you can choose your own employees, and I believe the oakhand elder has that relevant information. But before we send you off is there anything you would like to ask us? Your individual council representative will meet you before the solstice celebration, but until then you have just under four days to settle yourselves."
Vin listens with rapt attention as the most important people in the city talk about how to proceed. Vin seems to be in a particularly good mood suddenly and seems to be watching Lord Unvale Hemiran. When they finish and ask for questions Vin speaks up and says "Could I be kept informed or recieve reports of the progress for the investigation of the charm fruits? I know I'll be busy with lots of other tasks but if time allows I'd like to continue to help with that."
"I would ask for advisement on how the council would like us to engage in future run-ins with the clerics. Given recent events and the large implications of having their seat at the table revoked, what stance should we take officially or unofficially if, for example, a request for assistance or cooperation is made directly to us?"
"of course" Judge Tibus gives a nod to Vin, before continuing to answer Gewyn's question addressing the group as a whole, "officially there has been no act of aggression from the clerics of Hermes and we wish to keep it that way, if the people ask then the clerics are merely celebrating a high religious time with a grand pilgrimage.shouod the clerics themselves ask for help in the future, I leave it under your own discretion, but I would warn to be cautious, we know not their motives, we know not their end goal. But yourselves as ambassadors for each faction, and marblestead as whole, cannot be seen preemptively treating them as an enemy, we do not wish to act rashly and provoke an avoidable conflict."
A smile briefly brushes the lips of Elthana as she thinks about the fact they are all going to stay together. Not only as a team to go on missions as such, but live together, show a unified front. This is something she has a bit of trepidation about, this unified front. I hope they mean the others, she'll stay with the shadows, she muses. She steals a glance at Muir, wondering what all is going through her friends head. First being declared officially part of the group, and then all the discussion with the clerics.
She finally nudges him with her elbow and whispers, "You going to live with us or be antisocial and stay in your tree?"
She is very glad all this appears to be winding down though.
Muir snaps to and looks at Elthana "Oh I uhhh will do my best to stay in the house. Perhaps I could make it a little more environmentally friendly. Yes, it'll be good. I can show everyone my true passions...one being birds! What delightful creatures they are. I can hang little feeders up outside and have a nice garden for us all. Oh look at me getting ahead of myself. We can discuss this when we see our new abode." Muir smiles as his ears flaps in a manner that matches his smile
The meeting winds down and as the councilmembers continue on about some bureaucratic nonsense, the group is dismissed. One guard is waiting outside with some papers and calls over to the group to follow him. You are all led out of the large council building down the grand marble steps and back onto your carriage which is now noticeably missing any items that belonged to Sam.
After a short ride to the center of Marblestead, you find yourselves pulling into the courtyard of a large building, where several Dwarvish builders are busy clearing up after doing some work. the members of the group that have spent time in the central part of the city would know that this is the building that served as the modest headquarters of the clerical order of Hermes. This place served as their base of operations for managing logistics and storing resources, but as you disembark the carriage, and the guard stables your horses, it appears that everything that may have once been there has now been cleared out.
One older and more weather beaten dwarf, greets you, his mass of golden hair looks like it is fighting a raging battle against the oncoming grey that it is inevitably losing. He invites you into the house, Taking a side entrance he invites you down a corridor and to the first room on the right which opens up to a kitchen/living room. complete with a small bookshelf and a piano in the corner, as the group sit down the dwarf begins speaking in a happy manner but with some degree of boredom, trying to get the certain rigmarole of duty out of the way first "Righto! yer the special group that the council are paying fer, I'm Erriol Oakhand, current patriarch of the Oakhand Clan an' I'll be your contact regardin' any adjustments that you might like fer the house an' also makin' sure it's furnished fer anythin' else you or yer employees might need, are you with me?" he shuffles some papers and then puts them on the table for everyone to read "I'll be lettin' you 'ave a wander an' pick out yer rooms an' such like in a minute but you'll want to 'ave a look over these. One! is a list of furnishin's that I can offer at a reasonable price, this is the only room that's furnished beyond the base standard. But you've also got a shop room and a bedroom that goes along with that, which brings me to list number Two! that's a list of prospective employees, or basically someone who needs a place to sell from, that'll get you passive income and they might give you discounts on whatever..." Erriol goes on over to a kitchen bench and fills up a kettle with water to put over the stove, "well don't all move at once, you can read and walk about at the same time, only two of the rooms upstairs 'ave balconies so y'know, go call dibs fast, I'll be here makin' a brew when yer done."
Gewyn, already running an appreciative finger along the piano clears his throat and raises a hand. "Ahem. Dibs. Sorry," he says, looking apologetic. "A balcony is important for my aesthetic. I need a place to sit on a railing and brood dramatically under the moonlight. It also helps with song writing too I suppose. But really though. Imagine me living in a basement. Ha!"
The meeting wraps up and Vin seems to be feeling pretty good. The meeting turned out to go a lot better then he thought despite how it began. Vin tries to catch Unvale's eye before leaving but he is a busy man and when Vin left he wasn't sure if he noticed or not. That was fine. They were lead to a part of town Vin rarely gets chances to go to. The center of Marblestead. Neferox seems to be a bit indifferent at the proceedings. Almost as if she is bored. The only times she seemed interested was whenever the folks there were listening to Vin. She would stare quite intently at those gathered whenever they replied to Vin.
The ride to the new homestead for the Peacekeeprs went by fairly quick. During the trip Vin seemed to look at Gewyn a few times like he was going to ask something but seems to change his mind each time until he seems to be satisfied to wait and talk later. Other then that Vin seems content to enjoy the ride until they all finally arrive at the old cleric's places. Vin was amazed they were getting to stay here. The best he has ever had for a home was a single room as a student. Barely big enough to accommodate him and Nef. This place seemed huge and according to Erriol, it was theirs!
As they get out and begin to get a tour Vin is amazed at what is there! Five bedrooms, what looks like a small tavern, there is also a lot of shelves and a counter in one room like there could be a shop here too. Opening a store or tavern never really occurred to Vin. This could be a pretty happening place if they wanted. What did they want though? Vin realized he hasn't given it much thought outside of vague generalities. He was just focused on learning before. The past years in the school has been some of the best. Sure... most other students got scared of Nef but there were a few that stuck out in his mind that were kind to him despite their fear of her. It made it hard to connect to folks but lately... Neferox has been working with people and not just "testing" their worth.
Vin wasn't sure what he wanted as far as housing but for now, just picking a room will do. They view the rooms. Taking their time looking around. At first they were interested in the rooms with the balconies but it seems Muir and Gewyn picked those ones up. Vin was a little disappointed as the balcony was a good take off for his magical broom. It was okay though, Vin liked seeing his friends happy. He doesn't need the perfect room. These rooms are already way bigger then anything he has ever stayed in. He's fairly sure four of his dorm room could fit in each of these rooms.
As Vin was checking out the rooms up top Nef suddenly barks from below summoning Vin. The young man heads down and finds Nef in another room downstairs that Vin almost missed. The black hound was pacing around the room and gives a happy wag of tail and a woof as Vin looks around the downstairs room. "It's the most secure room?" another woof. "Oh, you like it then?" They tilt their head clearly not approving but shakes their head in reluctant acceptance. Vin Laughs. "It's not the biggest? It's okay if Elthana has it. I like this one too. I'm sure you have seen bigger but this is the biggest room I've ever gotten to stay in." Nef tilts their head and gives a small gruff. Then Vin sets his stuff down on the bed seeming to settle on this room.
Nef seems satisfied and Vin sets the baby mimic down to explore the room with a red carpet. The tiny critter having been fed regularly during all the traveling and now they made it home... to a new home for both of them by the looks of it. Vin pets them for a bit and Nef pushes her head under Vin's other arm to get pets as well which he happily gives her. He smiles and teases her a bit too "Jealous a bit?" The hound turns their head up and away as they go to curl in a corner in total defiance of even the idea she is jealous. Vin just smiles and sets the mimic aside as they look at the list Oakhand gave them. Vin reads it carefully and says "Oh, luxury beds for pets." Nef's ears perk up in his direction. "Haha, one coming up." Nef doesn't react except for the unmistakable wagging of her tail.
Once he figures out which room he was getting the young man goes to find Oakhand and place an order for their room. He gets a ridiculously over the top Neferox pet bed. If it costs more that is fine as Vin is looking to get her something really nice with the gold he made during their adventures. Even up to 100 gold on one. He'll have it custom made with her name on it clear and bold so folks know its hers. She is happy with bones and skull motif and although it isn't Vin's thing he will get one with decorations on it in that theme. He wonders if he can get one with chains and dragon bones. Might be too expensive for now but he'll go all out for a nice one for her.
He will also get a small 5 gold one for his baby mimic which he has begun to call "Cheryb". He isn't sure if it recognizes it's name yet but he's been trying to train it as best he can for the time he's had it. He is hopeful to talk to Professor Wooswin about how they all managed to train one before. It would be handy to have a mimic bag to protect his valuables. Also, the mimic was ridiculously cute. in addition to the pet beds Vin also places an order for a studying table and comfortable chair. He wanted something he could sit at and read or study new subjects he finds interesting. he also picks up a few books on religion and history to read later. Ideally it would have one of those single row book end holder for a small collection of books.
After putting together this small list of purchases he goes to find Oakhand to hand in those requests. After that he goes to check in with the others. In particular, he has something to ask Gewyn but figured it could wait until after everyone got settled in the new place. When it seems like folks have finished settling in Vin will knock on the door to Gewyn's room and ask "Gewyn, do you have a moment?"
