As the team hurries to cover their faces with cloths dampened with some water from your waterskins, and makes the climb to the cargo deck, Miken stammers, "I… I don't know what happened. One moment Officer Ryeback was… about to start cooking dinner, then the next the whole galley was… full of flame. Pfffred and Krik'Lit were with the supplies, I… I don't know if they're all right," he sniffs. To your surprise, the nameless autognome follows Eris through the access shaft like a loyal puppy; even Veena comes along.
Princess gets a preview through the helm of what you'll find on the cargo deck: thick smoke fills the deck, limiting visibility dramatically [vision is reduced to 10 feet; anything beyond that is heavily obscured]. Pfffred and Krik'Lit have opened the barrels of water you brought with you and are trying to hold back the fire from spreading further into the deck. Even with the ship's-eye-view it's hard to see into the galley itself, but what looks like the giff pretty officer is lying on the ground, unmoving. You can't feel the heat but it must be intense, some lumps of some kind of molten metal lie around the chamber.
[As each of you that need to breathe reach the cargo deck, please make a DC 10 Con save (with advantage if you've taken Eris's smake saftey advice and covered your mouth with a damp cloth); on a failure you gain 1 level of exhaustion]
[I've left Princess at the helm, but if you want to join everyone on the cargo deck that's fine, it wouldn't have taken long to look around through the helm and you'd be right behind the rest.]
Icarus, seeing the fire, runs into the area and either casts Prestidigitation if that works to snuff out the fires or grabs buckets and starts to douse the fires.
"No..." Eris mutters once she sees the dead giff on the floor. "No, no, no no NO NO NO NO!"Eris grabs another bucket and puts out one of the fires. If she can, she'll use feline agility to dash back and refill her own bucket and then put out another fire on her next turn.

[I'm reminded that I don't do this enough: for quick thinking in smoke safety advice, Eris gains inspiration; and for playing character by ignoring that advice, so does Da'Kal.]
You start putting out the flames. The autognome stands behind you, seeming to not want to approach the fire itself. Meanwhile you've lost sight of Veena; it might be your imagination but you think you hear her wailing "Where is everybody?!" from the wrong way down the corridor.
Working together you're quickly able to beat back the fire enough to get to the prone Petty Officer Ryeback. [Who approaches to check on the giff?]
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Zoide and Eris make it to Ryeback's body, and are quickly able to tell that it is just that: his body. The giff is dead. Near his body one of the lumps of molten metal is gently cooling, but as you examine the corpse three other lumps unfold into small, evil-looking creatures!
[Time to roll initiative! Enemy initiative: 18; in addition, if your passive perception is less than the enemy stealth roll of: 18, you are surprised and can't move or take an action on your first turn, and can't use a reaction until the end of that turn.]
"No... Now he won't be able to find whatever gun he was looking all this while..." Eris mildly sobs... until something catches her feline eyes only to be startled.
