The creatures, which until they moved were indistinguishable from lumps of molten metal or stone, get the jump on you. Two swipe at Eris and Zoide with their claws, while the third moves toward the group slightly before spitting a cone of magical fire at you! [#1 Claw vs Zoide: 18 for 3 slashing damage plus 4 fire damage #2 Claw vs Eris: 22 for 2 slashing damage plus 2 fire damage #3 Fire Breath: Zoide, Icarus and Princess must each make a DC 11 Dex save, taking 6 fire damage on a failed save, or 3 fire damage on a successful one]
The other cadets [(NPCs)] back away from the fight, continuing to put out spot fires that crop up as best they can, but staying away from the creatures.
[That's the surprise round done; Eris and Icarus are up at the top of round 2. Also, from here on each time you start your turn on the cargo deck, you must repeat that DC 10 Con save (still with advantage if you've covered your mouth) or gain a level of exhaustion.]
Eris and Icarus punch and stab two of the fiery creatures. They both retaliate with their claws, and the other swipes at Zoide as well. [#1 Claw vs Zoide: 12 for 4 slashing damage plus Unable to parse dice roll. fire damage #2 Claw vs Eris: 9 for 5 slashing damage plus 3 fire damage #3 Claw vs Icarus: 23 for 7 slashing damage plus 5 fire damage]
[Zoide, Princess and Da'Kal are up next; don't forget your Con saves against the smoke]
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Zoide summons a spectral mace on the opposite side of one of the creatures, which thwacks it across the back of the head. Princess gets as close as she can and uses the reach of her whip, opening a gash across the thing's throat. It won't be moving again. Or at least, as a whole creature; since what actually happens is that as it expires, it explodes, with many small pieces of it moving quite rapidly in all directions as sticky gobs of burning magma. [Any creature within 5ft—which I think is just Eris—must make a DC 11 Dex save, taking 5 fire damage on a failed save or 2 on a successful one]
Da'Kal moves up into the vacated space and slashes at the second creature, catching it a glancing blow that takes a small chunk out of its shoulder.

DEX Save as the Catian tanks the explosion: 18
"Ugh! Everyone get back and play long range! These thingies explode once you finish them off!" Eris screams as she moves back 10 feet (She'll take the opportunity attack if so) but not before she strikes again with an uppercut at the second fire monster.
Thunder Gauntlet Attack: 24 Damage: 11
BA: Slams her gauntlets and gives herself 3hp
