(Ya it does it makes it reroll and puts up that warning)
You all see Belnum take on a menacing tone and become an incredibly imposing figure. Ashford looks frightened, ready to tell him anything he wants to know. Then right before he does its as if he loses himself for a second. It passes quickly and gone is the man you saw before, replaced by one filled with hate and rage directed at you. He speaks with a icy tone.
”I’ll be having ya leave my property now, good luck out there dangerous times.”
He walks back into his house and waves the two farmhands you see working the field into the house too.
"THANK YOU FOR YOur input. We'll look into that." yells Brix to the man, his voice quieting as the door slams. Turning to the others he urges again. "Let's get this rock shall we." As he hurries towards the clerics cabin.
"Yes, let's get moving, we have wasted enough time here." states Belnum, not believing the man's claim that Maggie is kidnapping people and practicing 'dark arts'.
The party takes its leave and makes its way down the rest of the path to Crelik’s cottage. You arrive at a cottage with ornate sun carved onto the door. It is small and very modest, perhaps not what you would expect from a man of such prominence in the village. As you unlock the door and enter you see a very simple general area for cooking and eating with a tiny bed set on the far side. A steel trunk sets under it. In the middle of the room is a well skinned bear rug that acts like a carpet.
(I would like to check out the chest to see if there are any odd markings on it before sliding it out from under the bed so its contents can be checked. investigation check: 19)
As you make your way over to the chest and step on the bear rug I would like you to make a will save along with anyone else that would have moved with you.
You feel a presence try to force its way into your mind as you step onto the rug. An old presence, one that has been in this village for a long time slumbering, but is awake now. You feel its desire to have you serve it, to have you worship it, to feed it. A strong compulsion to fall prostrate and bow washes over you but you are able to push back from the farthest recesses of your mind with a strength it was not prepared for. With a gasp for air you are free and once again your mind is yours alone.
After recovering from his experience Belnum let's out a soft chuckle. "Well I think I know why that man was trying to mislead us with that whole Maggie's practicing dark arts thing..." He then looks up to the rest of the group and states, "What ever you do don't step on the bear skin."
Using Belnum’s warning, Veyran lifts his hand and conjures a translucent arcane hand to try and lift the bear rug or at least drag it to the side where it will not hinder the group.
Your mage hand is able to drag the rug off to the side of the room. As it moves it slowly uncovers the same symbol you saw drawn on the temple wall. This one however seems much more sinister in nature and appears to be drawn in blood. The blood is dried and you can guess that it has been here for several days at least.
Belnum your inspection of the trunk reveals that it has a the symbol of Lucius the deity of light on it and appears to have have a blessing cast on it.
After checking out the trunk, Belnum notices the symbol drawn in blood on the floor that is where the bear rug used to be. "Well, that is certainly peculiar, when I stepped on that I felt like something was trying to force its way into my mind. It would seem like the local cleric wasn't so lucky, though."
You both study the blood symbol intently for something recognizable. You recognize nothing from any known arcane schools, but as you open your senses to magical energy you realize that is has a nature that is closer to divine power. Twisted in nature and not as strong but a similar feel.
Brix looks about for a water source of some type. If he finds one he tries to clean the floor by pour water across the drawing being careful not to touch it.
Your able to find a bucket of water kept in the cabin. Without touching or entering the symbol you manage to wipe it away. Once you have broken it you can feel the air in the cottage change to one that is less oppressive.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"There that's better!" exclaims Brix as the mood in the room lightens. "Everyone spread out and look for anything that might be associated with that symbol or meteors." Says the gnome as he starts his own search.
Inside the trunk you find a greenish rock, it is a little large than a fist and surprising light. Under the cot padding you find Crelik’s Journal.
A look inside reveals dates and people he has been working to help. They continue until you get close to the most recent entries. You see the same symbol drawn on one of the pages over and over. Another shows a man being swallowed whole. There is one that shows a baby being fed into a mouth by a figure. Lastly there is one of a woman being thrown into a mouth with five figures behind her smiling.
A page later you read in large writing across the page, What have I done? What have I done? What have I done?
Veyran looks over Brix’s shoulder at the journal. A face of disgust is visible.
"Seems the good cleric might have gotten involved with something bigger than he can handle. Should we really believe what he’s been saying? Something about this doesn’t sit right with me. "
"Agreed, which is why we keep the rock until we know more, then we destroy it." replies Brix. "If there is nothing else lets go see this "Mad" Maggie. Then we can question the good cleric about this journal." Says Brix as he tucks away the journal.
