Sam, keeping his eye on the bird, whispers out the side of his mouth to Dan. "Whip out some of that bird seed, and let's see if we can distract them and get across this lake."
Okay so how this is going to work is as follows (if you need me to explain better just say 😁):
The cave entrance is a couple hundred feet away, running across the icy surface of the lake which is slippery. Alternatively, characters can run along a path, but that's going to be further to move as they need to go round.
Every round, I want people to roll either athletics to move as fast as they can (on the path) or acrobatics (across the ice, less distance but you're trying not to fall over). The birds will roll against you getting closer on a success. If they catch up then they'll swarm you, stopping you from running. It'll take three rounds of running to reach the cave, on a natural one you fall over and don't move that turn.
Characters can try and do something else as well as running, such as throwing bird seed to distract the birds, casting a spell, shooting at them or other shenanigans, but they'll take disadvantage on their check for that turn.
The bird seed falls right in the centre of the mass, creating a swarm of birds clawing and pecking at each other for food. They are so preoccupied that they move no distance that turn. Meanwhile, the two of you make steady progress across the lake, keeping your footing. Sam is sightly ahead.
I'm gonna skip Graham just to keep things moving and say he's made steady progress, lagging sightly behind but not by much.
Dan absolutely books it, accelerating over the ice and reaching the cave mouth with a sudden burst of speed. Huffing and wheezing, he can see the others still making their way across the ice
Realizing that he hasn’t run in some time now and is getting a bit winded, Graham decides to switch tactics and tries to navigate deftly around cracks in the ice.
The birds, making up for their earlier nat one, fly furiously towards Graham, squawking angrily at having been tricked by birdseed not once, but twice. One bird snaps at him, ripping away a few strands of hair.
