Quill: The manticore stops just as it is moving to strike, as if every muscle in its body has suddenly frozen. But his furious eyes glare at Quill. Friar Bernard continues his quarterstaff swing into Warrel's face. (18 with advantage since warrel can't move this round: 13) He connects with an audible crack to the manticore's skull. (damage: 17) oops, ignore that. meant to click d6. (7)
There is a ripple across Warrel's whole body and he falls to the ground. His body resumes it's true shape, no longer in manticore form. Everyone watching now sees what the novice initiate, in reality, is.
i rush over to Warrel and look over at the limp body on the ground. Do I know anything about what Warrel was? “Friar Bernard, wh- what Is this. And why is it here?”

Demoiselle's jaw dropped and she stepped up to the body. "Is that what I think it is? A Doppelganger? Here?!" She exclaimed. Speaking her thoughts out loud she wondered "So, was Warrel replaced or was he this creature all along?"
Quill and Friar Bernard agree with Demoiselle. It is certainly a doppleganger. "But whether that is really Warrel or not, I do not know," the goliath says, still standing in a defensive position. The creature makes a skittering dash away from you towards the market square.
"Are you sure it is a doppel... thing?" I ask Demoiselle, trying to contribute to this conversation. "Perhaps Warren is simply a creature who can assume the shape of one."

Quill: Warrel's wisdom save: 10 The creature halts mid-flight as Demoiselle dashes to catch it. She and Korlan easily grapple Warrel as he is temporarily unable to move. Esvaris and Bernard arrive steps behind them. Warrel's face is a rictus of hate.
While on top of Warrel, I look up at Friar Bernard. “What should we do with Warrel? He’s obviously not safe but..... I mean.... w- we can’t kill him....”
Korlan: Friar Bernard rubs his hand along his jaw, thinking. "It would seem best that we give him over to the Wickham city guard. He is no cleric, since he did not pass the initiation," at this he looks sadly at the thing that is Warrel. "and therefore is not under the jurisdiction of the church. Yet, he has harmed others, in his anger. So he must face consequences."
At that moment Lord Brackus arrives with two guards flanking him. "Yes, he must." Eyes flicking to Warrel and away, he folds his hands within the sleeves of his robes. "He will certainly receive his due for his actions this day." The guards move forward to manacle Warrel, and after Korlan moves, they stand him up between them. A touch of chill is in the air, now that evening has truly come. The bound doppleganger, shoulders slumped, ripples and shifts until he looks like the round faced, shaggy haired initiate that he had been. Looking up at Esvaris, tears are evident in his eyes.
"I didn't know, you know. Until I was 13, and thought I was goin' to become a man, but became... this, instead." Mouth pinched tight in anger again he says, "I guess we were both wrong, then. Because a goddess isn't any more forgiving than people. But you shouldn't claim to serve the light when it's just as dark inside the church as out." He cuts his eyes towards Brackus and then allows the guards to lead him away, Lord Brackus in the lead.
As they walk away, Friar Bernard stares thoughtfully at their backs. "Usoara does not place light in a darkened soul," he says softly. "She merely reveals what is already there." Turning to Esvaris he adds, "You and your friends are welcome to join me on the journey to the Broken Sun temple tomorrow after dawn service, if you wish. You all did very well this evening." Then he heads back to the basilica where everyone is quietly cleaning up and whispering about events in hushed voices.
Quill gasps.
"Warrel, stop this!" he cries, then tries again, voice deepening with magic: "HALT!"
(Command, targeting Warrel and using the "Halt" option.)
