Backstory (WIP): He was created by the old friend, who had grown very sick over time, of the now deceased adventurer to continue discovering the reason for the first calamity and to protect his friends.
@iamdaliking: Okay, now that's an interesting question. Warforged aren't part of the world of Dragonlance, but tinker gnome created clockwork is. I am unaware of any autonomous humanoid creations (though again not a Dragonlance expert), the obvious thing would be to suggest playing a tinker gnome armorer artificer, but they don't really play like rangers. I have an alternative idea that you might possibly like. You could maybe make a tinker gnome ranger character that has constructed a clockwork suit of armor. To put it on or take it off, you must spend a short rest doing so, not receiving any of the other benefits of the short rest. When you are in the clockwork suit, you have the stats of a warforged ranger. Your spell slots are shared between the forms, but HP is separate. You can't take a long rest in the suit, or take a short rest to do anything but take the suit off while wearing it. If you die in the suit your gnome dies too (crushed to death by twisted metal or whatever). I think having two HP pools is balanced by the loss of short rests and limitations on long rests, but I'd like to hear from the other players if they are okay with this idea before going with it.
Now the question is what sort of backstory would fit the reason why he would want a suit of armor? Is it because he’s getting older? Also, I had a cool idea about him embodying a certain persona when he wears the suit of armor. Perhaps he thinks that people, namely enemies, would not take him seriously in battle if he came as himself instead of being a “coldhearted machine“. Outside of the suit, he is his regular self though.
@iamdaliking: I think the dual persona thing is a cool idea. He may have wanted to make an intimidating suit so people would take him more seriously, or maybe he had some nonviolent original use for it (I'm not sure what, a tree-cutting machine? a beekeeper's suit?).
@Everyone: No rush on this, but when you've come up with a character you think you'll go for I'd like for you to give me two things: a sample of prose about the character (maybe a description of them or an action sequence involving them), and a sample of them talking (they could be giving an introduction or talking about their homeland or whatever you feel like). Just a bit of due diligence on my part, these don't have to be long three or four sentences for each is fine.
Hi there! My name is Evie, I use she/her and they/them pronouns. I am super interested in participating in this campaign! I am relatively new to DND (been playing for about 4 months in 2 campaigns) and I am hoping that a text based PbP game will help me practice getting in character and roleplaying with more confidence. I also love the idea of being able to play between my in person games.
As far as character goes, I am thinking maybe a Kender (primarily)Bard/Rogue multiclass?
@EvieMarie0126: Nice to meet you Evie! She/her for me. : ) A Kender Bard with a bit of Rogue sounds fun. Let me know if you need any help coming up with backstory, etc.
@Everyone: Speaking of multiclassing, if ya'll want to do that you can ignore the stat restrictions. You want to dip wizard despite having 8 int, go right ahead, lol.
Sounds great. I would like to join if there is still room.
Character: Wilberforce
Race: Halfling (Kender)
Class: Druid level 2
Background: Wilberforce was taken by slavers at a young age, when the rest of his town was murdered. He then spent 30 years working as a slave, alongside goblin slaves, until he gained the chance to escape to a forest while travelling to a new mining camp. We lived in the forest for years and eventually developed his druidic skills. He is generally light hearted and positive as any situation is better than being a slave. Having been property himself he doesn't really believe in ownership and is just as likely to take something as give it away. He lacks any formal education and is largely uninterested in politics. He worships Zivilyn and is always looking for the joy in things; however he can become irrational when it comes to slavers. Having lived most of his life alongside goblin slaves he is hesitant to attack them unless warranted.
"It's so wonderful in this tavern. The people are so nice and there is food and drink for everyone. Here I just found this ale by the sleepy Half-orc over there, let us all drink to Zivilyn and give thanks to this glorious day. So what are we doing again?"

Thanks! I am thinking eventually, depending on how everything shakes out as we go, 2-5 levels of rogue and the rest bard. I haven't decided what Bard college, I think I will kind of play it by ear as we are going along also. I am thinking of maybe taking the Fey Wanderer background. Playing on the idea of Kender as hyper-curious, Orisatra (Ori for short) accidently strayed too close to a fairy circle as a child and while she was investigating these weird mushrooms, she fell through into the feywild. Instead of being scared, she felt like she was home, and for years she frolicked with Satyrs and partied with Fairy Dragons - learning all the ways that she could charm and beguile. And most importantly they taught her the power of the music that suffuses her very essence. During all the conflict she was somehow shunted back into the material plan, and took up a life of adventuring - never one to loose her spirits, she figured adventuring was the closest she could get to her life in the feywild and that is how she has met other adventures and been part of all that is happening at the beginning of the campaign. Although there is that little piece of her that longs to return to her friends in the feywild where there is always something new to explore or experience.
Sorry. Just seen the post by Evie. I do have another character, so we don't have two kenders.
Character: Chester Stage
Race: Rock Gnome
Class: Sorcerer (Copper Dragon Bloodline) Lvl 2
Background: The child of dedicated fighters Chester was an oddity who was more interested in mixing potions and how things worked. He was especially drawn to acids at an early age, which his adventuring parents did their best to support. He joined the Alchemist Guild and spent many happy years researching his craft, but never excelling. One day his sorcery asserted itself when a mage hand appeared and allowed him to reach a tomb from a high shelf. Now brimming with a new found sense of power and an odd sense of destiny he has gone out into the world to help others, prove himself to his guild and maybe find information on his copper dragon ancestry. Small, even for a Gnome, he is looking for more robust companions who can support his adventures while he offers advice from the rear. He is desperate to be respected and if he doesn't know the answer to something he will make one up.
"Well I actually I wrote a paper on that very subject a few years ago. Very well received it was too, I remember the compliments. I even was invited to the guild master to explain some subjects that she couldn't understand. Therefore we should definitely go west"

I don't mind if we both play kender. Maybe we knew each other or grew up in villages close to each other but weren't ever SUPER close and lost track of each other over the years. And now at this funeral we see each other and have one of those "wait, OMG is that YOU? I haven't seen you for ages!" Type moment
@EvieMarie0126: Sounds good, we'll have to figure out when she met Ispin Greenshield, you're thinking after she came back?
@KudosWyvernspur: Chester sounds great, an interesting note is that at some point (I think it was around the Calamity but I may be misremembering) the metallic dragons left the part of Krynn where things will take place, so any ancestor is likely to have been several generations back.
Thanks. Having two Kenders does sound like a challenge for everyone, of course that isn't a reason not to do it. However I think that everyone would have to been on board with the reception that a party with multiple Kenders is likely to receive anywhere that isn't Kendermore. Will we be automatically cased out of town :-) I did give Wilberforce a tragic background, therefore he may act oddly and over protective to anyone he knew from before the whole village being killed event. Again a challenge isn't a reason not to do it. I'm happy with either character or to create a new one if that makes more with the narrative.

I am imagining that she probably met Ispin after she came back. Maybe he was the one who got her her first job as an adventurer and she always looked up to him in almost a father-like way?
On the technical side of things - how do you feel about the spell silvery barbs? And how would you feel if I had proficiency with a Hoopak instead of a rapier? It feels like it goes better in line with Ori's adventures in the feywild and with her being a Kender?
Last question - I think she primarily uses spells, but if you allow the Hoopak proficiency, and if she chose to use it ranged, how closely - or at all - would you like to track ammunition?
@EvieMarie0126: Sure, that works for Ispin. I'm fine with you taking silvery barbs. I didn't read about the hoopak until just now, it seems it's a two-handed, finesse, spear/sling combo? I don't think there's a balance issue swapping out rapier proficiency for that (if anything rapier + shortbow seems better), and it does seem like it fits the character concept, so sure. As far as ammo goes, I'm not going to be double checking how much ammo you have but keep track of it yourself.
Sounds good to me. Wilberforce doesn't know a lot of history or culture, but if he randomly remembers something he could just blurt it out to Ori, and then feel overly proud of himself for passing something on to the next generation.
Will a Druid work OK with the state of the gods? He could just worship Nature directly rather than a deity.

@KudosWyvernspur: We can do this one of two ways. Either he pulls his magic from nature (and may or may not also revere Zivilyn as an absent god), or he can have been blessed with his magic recently with the return of the old gods, in which case we can work out what the event where he discovered his divine-primal magic was like.

That’s…not a bad idea. Though, I only have Rock, Forest, and Deep Gnome not a Tinker Gnome.
@iamdaliking: Oh no worries, I believe tinker gnomes are just what rock gnomes are called in Dragonlance so you wouldn't need anything additional.
Phew!
