You can bet! And a fan of the elf 'class' to boot, because of my love for arcane warrior types. Always been really, really unconvinced of that weird initial choice to make them 'classes' - but, hey, it still was an awesome game.
First edition was so incredibly complete... I mean, it guided you through your career from unskilled young adventurer to 'immortal' status ( = godhood)! And that was still not the end, for there were 'immortal' quests too!
Only, well, a bit too challenging in my opinion. Really too easy to die. But still, incredibly rich product - even with its limits, it always gave me the feeling of a product developed with love.
Here is an article / link that uses the white board and red yarn to show nearly all the 'influences' on how D&D ended up with the Order (Law) vs Chaos (Evil) concept.
Physical appearance: Long red hair, usually kept in loose braids. Freckled face. Blue eyes. Average height, sturdy build. Typically wears simple clothes and a kerchief on her head.
Personality, character, ideals: Is friendly but not boisterous. Looks to people's actions more than their words. Tends to distrust those who speak in an overly eloquent manner. Gets bored easily, but always hopes to do great things. Believes all people deserve respect, regardless of who they are. As a result tends to be willing to lend a hand. She's very proud of her past life and carrying on a reminder of that is important to her.
Background:
The Raincrest family had a very small farm near Longsaddle, although it was quite a long walk from the town. They had a few farm animals and grew a couple of small crops. It was just barely enough to sustain the family. And sometimes it wasn't quite enough.
Roxana Raincrest was the second oldest child in her family, with one older sister, a younger sister, and then a younger brother. All were expected to help out on the farm, but Roxana probably picked up the most skills. She enjoyed working with the animals, driving their cart, tending to small injuries, and especially cooking.
As a child, and as she grew older, Roxana only had a few friends. And they tended to come from some of the least affluent and rougher families. She never really joined them in anything criminal, but certainly picked up a number of skills allowing her to get things done in ways that avoided direct confrontation. One girl, Solaina Frostbow, taught her quite a bit, so that she became adept at picking locks and the unique jargon and symbols of the streets.
Over the years, Roxana and all her siblings would find extra jobs in town. For her it was usually working the taverns. Mostly it was as a server, but in time she got a reputation as a good cook and tended to be in the kitchen. Eventually, this became her full-time work. She was able to move out onto her own, even if it was just the tiniest room in the servants' section of the tavern. And of course, she still lent a hand as needed at her parents' farm.
Never much the center of attention, she had only the occasional suitors interested in her. But a couple of years ago a somewhat mysterious nobleman came from out of town and ended up sweeping her off her feet. But it didn't end well.
Over time, evidence started to show up that seemed to show Roxana was cheating this nobleman out of a great deal of money. She was even arrested and set for a trial. Certainly her past acquaintances and familiarity with some of the shadier people in the area did not help her case.
In the end, she was able to find information to prove that she had been set up by the man she thought was interested in her. He was really a noble, but down on his luck and trying to use Roxana to squeeze out what money he could at her expense. She ended up owing a debt to Solaina for helping her.
Exposing the scheme made Roxana a bit of a hero for a bit in the town. The fact that she stood up to the man was applauded. And exposing his lies not only won her own freedom but also saved many others around Longsaddle from being scammed.
The experience has left Roaxana feeling a bit out of place just working as a cook in a tavern. She's been starting to wonder if it's really what she wants for her life.
Roleplay:
Roxana was absentmindedly cleaning up the kitchen at the Gilded Horseshoe Inn at the end of the midday rush. Only a few stragglers were left in the place, many that seemed to have no better place to go, but weren't going to be ordering food. It had been a busy few hours, but she was glad to have had the work. It seemed that the Snulgers needed her help less and less lately. Which didn't make much sense as they clearly needed an extra hand in the kitchen.
Stepping past the door out into the tavern, she couldn't help but overhear Erah speaking to a strong looking man in armor. 'An adventurer,'she thought as she lingered by the door to listen. As the tavern owner spoke of Shoeless Martha she smiled. 'What would Martha need help with,' she wondered, but she got back to business.
The work wrapped up and the kitchen spotless, Roxana washes off her hands and starts to head up to her little room upstairs. "Oh, there you are dear!" Erah says. "You know, I don't think we'll be needing you tomorrow. Sorry about that dear. But do stay close at hand just in case."
"Of course. As you say," Roxana replies. She slowly starts toward the direction of her room. 'I could have used the money,' the thinks, which causes her to pause in her steps. 'Perhaps I should stop by to see Martha and find out what this business of hers is. Right away she said, so no time like the present!' With a new purpose, she hurries up the stairs to her room. There she swiftly grabs her drab green cloak then in moments is back down and out the door. off to find Martha.
You had mentioned the background should explain why the character reached Longsaddle or that they happened to pass through by change. Hopefully it is ok to have grown up nearby and lived in and around Longsaddle? I felt like she would not have established relationships with any of the prominent families at this point. Nor was her family well-known or influential.
If it needs to be adjusted I can do that. Just let me know!
A first week has passed since I opened the recruitment process, so I summarize the applications received (excluding those who have withdrawn, of course):
Fully valid applications: Bluepanther512 - with Ilwythe, Half-orc Barbarian (Totem Warrior) Culuril - with Roxana Raincrest, Human Rogue (Tief) DirtyDogP - with Engelhart Farrun, Human Fighter (Battle Master) Dragonmage77- with Ari, Human Warlock (Great Old One) FrandalSilvereyes - with Aidwyn, Human Fighter (Battle Master) Kol_Drake - with Tarysaa Arı, Moon Elf Wizard OisinmacCameron - with Quspira Inirali, Tiefling Cleric (Life Domain) Saute_Monkey - with Daisy Holderheck, Hill Dwarf Druid (Circle of Moon) TheOneSam - with Thalos "Stormsong" Copperbranch, Lightfoot Halfling Bard
Applications to complete (unless I'm mistaken - correct me if you think I've missed a post of yours): Aydnkyi made a practically empty post... If you need help on something (directions on how to generate stats or something like that) try asking, I will help you. Furujiru rolled out the stats and initially seemed inclined to play a Wild Magic Sorcerer… but didn't provide character details yet (perhaps considering other possibilities). MakingMerryMusic rolled the stats (and well) but didn't provide character details yet. Oberon99 rolled the stats but didn't provide character details yet. Tordon38 - with Ardana, Tiefling Paladin only missing point D (roleplay your character's reaction upon hearing about the quest) - come on, choose one of the four possibilities and show us how Ardana reacts! YoFizz rolled the stats but didn't provide character details yet. ZimmSalabim - with Nimblestep Thimblestein, Lightfoot Halfling Bard only missing point D (roleplay your character's reaction upon hearing about the quest) - come on, choose one of the four possibilities and show us how Nimblestep reacts!
Since the recruitment has been more successful than I had hoped, I think I'll just give it another week (not two as I originally thought). So, on June 29 I will close the selection and choose the characters included in the party. In the meantime, those who have not yet perfected the application, please do so (if still interested, of course), let's see what other applications arrive in these seven days... then let's play!
I think I included my reaction! I will expand on it.
You're right, apologies! I overlooked that part, my bad. Application perfect.
(You know, there are a lot of posts... that's why I wrote 'correct me if you think I've missed a post of yours')

Ardana has been travelling for months after leaving home. She has taken a few caravan escort gigs but no permanent job. The caravan she was guarding had stopped when she saw a notice on the sign for Longsaddle saying that help was urgently needed. Maybe this was a way to use her skills to help someone who actually needed her help. Suddenly she tired of mercenary work and petitioned her employer for release of her contract, and left the caravan to journey to Longsaddle. Now is her chance to do good in the world.
Ardana has been travelling for months after leaving home. She has taken a few caravan escort gigs but no permanent job.
The caravan she is guarding had stopped for a midday meal when she saw a notice on the sign for Longsaddle saying that help was urgently needed. Ardana paused and took a long moment to re-read the notice, thinking deeply on the matter. The plea for help really struck a chord. Suddenly she snapped out of her think and she purposely sought out the leader of the guard.
He was eating his meal and Ardana raised the question. He was surprised and concerned, but did not see how he could keep Ardana from her path. Ardana expressed concern about breaking her contract and returned her advance pay. She apologized for leaving so abruptly, but left little doubt of her resolve. She already carried all her possessions in the world, so there was nothing else to pack. After seeking out all the fellow mercenaries and wishing them well, she set off down the road towards Longsaddle. It took her the rest of the day, she came into town after sundown but before the sky had turned to black. She entered the town and asked the first person she met on the street for directions to the inn. She would rest for the night and seek out Martha in the morning.
Nimblestep Thimblestein (or Nim as he prefers to be called) marches Jauntily along the dusty road with a look of contemplation on his face as he experimentally plucks away at his prized Thimblestein family lute, humming away a melody that comes to him much easier than the words he is searching for.
”mmm dadadaaa my aching feet could do with something to eat” he sings aloud to himself, scrunching his face at the obvious lack of artistry in these improvised words. If only he could sing from his heart instead of his stomach. Well what else could you expect? A halfling’s appetite is not something to underestimate.
Nim’s attention was suddenly whisked away from meats, breads and cheeses, and onto a finely made and written signpost in the road. He leaned in close to read the words marked upon it while still playing his new tune slowly in order to let him try out new possible lyrics.
Reading all the interesting bits aloud melodically to himself, he sang:
“Adventures needed… roombadada…harpells. Hmm rhymes with bells that’s good… A matter of life or death!! Oh what a chorus that would make! I smell a bit of an adventure, and if I’m lucky I’ll smell something a little more delicious at that Sharnshield manor. Ooh I do hope they have a good cook!”
And onwards he went, skipping and playing along at a much brisker pace, singing “it’s a matter of life or death!” To his tune repeatedly to get the words to fit into his chorus.

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Name: Schnocktirs Shieldcrusher
Race: Human (+1 to all rolled ability scores below)
Ability scores:1212911149
Class: Monk
Physical appearance: a gangly male youth of 15 with dark brown hair and blue eyes. Though he looks scrawny at 5' 10" with a weight of 95 lbs, he packs a bigger punch than his size would suggest, though he is as quick as he looks.
Background: Celebrity Adventurer's Scion
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Lifestyle: Poor
Personality Traits: I’ve seen enough of the adventuring life to have realistic expectations and empathy for my peers. No one can fake a smile, a handshake, or an interested nod like I can.
Ideals: Anonymity. I want to be successful. And alone. With lots of guards and wards between me and everyone else in the world.
Bonds: I consider every member of my parent’s former adventuring party to be family.
Flaws: My best days are behind me. Ahead lies only toil, pain, and death.
Backstory Description: While my parents are famous they were never wealthy. My parents wanted me to be a powerful spell caster or knight like they were but I was not able to meet their expectations with magic or wielding a shield; I am obviously better fighting with only my hands. I gained my Monk level because a member of my parent's party trained me.
The current employer of my parents does not value my talents so while my parents are proud of my abilities, I am seen as a disappointment by their employer. Knowing this and my abilities and wanting me to have a better environment to develop, they have suggested I get some real world experience. So I have recently left home to make my own name but do not have a clue where I am going or how I am going to make that name. My parents warned me to avoid magic users while traveling through Longsaddle.
I avoid accepting praise or rewards for something my parents did when I myself had nothing to do with it. While proud of my parents, I try to hide my relation to them so others won't expect so much of me, try to use me for their own ends, or think they can use me to get to my parents. I have not fully decided on my alias yet, but James Lightfist is the current front runner. I plan to never use my parents name to get something or influence someone but do recognize it may be required for something no matter how much I want to avoid it.
To hide my real reason for traveling, I am traveling as someone looking to become a wood carver's apprentice.
The Adventure:
I arrive in Longsaddle at the end of a long days travel. The group I happened to find traveling the same direction as me has a few cocky men I can't wait to be rid of. We go to the Night Cloak Inn to find a room as it sounds much more affordable than the Gilded Horseshoe. However, upon seeing all the magic being used to do all the work I want to get out of there as soon as possible. While the matron is giving her appeal for help to the others I make my silent escape, though I am curious about who needs help and why. Perhaps the Gilded Horseshoe, which looks smaller, will be better after all, though if they use magic for everything I might be sleeping outside again. That would save me some coin anyway.
Deciding to at least get a meal from the other inn I walk in alone. The old woman who greets me seems much friendlier and I feel more welcome here. I ask for a room and a meal which she quickly provides. As I am eating, a new group comes in and after a while I overhear the matron telling them of the help Martha Sharnshield is in need of. I decide to look into it in the morning just to see what is going on, not really planning to take the job. As if they would even ask me since I'm so young. Not even the matron approached me with the request.
Great! So, with a new valid application by badfishingdad75, two updates by Tordon38 and ZimmSalabim and a name correction (Kol_Drake's character surname was changed to Sōlus), situation is now:

With less than stellar rolls and only base rules it's a bit of a puzzle to make an efficient character. Interesting no problem but you kind of want to not die of a stiff breeze and contribute during combat, exploration and social encounters :)
Currently have a dragonborn paladin, gnome wizard, halfling ranger, half-elf sorcerer and human warlock on the docket to examine and consider what might be best and/or the most fun.

Tarysaa Sōlus groaned as the villager at the next table started in on another wild tale... or was it a bedtime story... or how he wished things would be in Longsaddle? Why did non magic users always come up with these silly ideas? ===========================================================================
"Once upon a time, there was a castle that stood on a tall mountain and seemed to be trying to touch the sky. It was a dark, gloomy castle and it belonged to a wizard. He hated it. He wished it was a pretty and welcoming castle, one that would not frighten away everyone. As it was, no one came to visit or bring cakes or just chat on the doorstep since the villagers were all frightened by the forbodding castle.
One day when the wizard was walking in the village, several young children came to him and one said, “Oh mighty Wizard, we would like to be your friend, but we do NOT like your castle.” "It is what it is, I fear. The dark, gloomy castle stays perched on the tall mountain like a vulture hunched over it's approaching dinner." The children looked at each other and shrugged. "Fine. How do you suppose I should tame this gloomy bird?"
“You could paint it.” “You could plant flowers along the path and around it.” “You could open the windows and let the sun in.” The suggestions continued to flow until all the children shushed Hansel for suggesting the Wizard turn the castle into a gingerbread house. The Wizard considered all these suggestions and then nodded sagely. “My fine children, you are wise beyond your years. I will ponder your suggestions and we shall see what becomes of it all. Thank you, children.” And with that, the wizard turned on his heels and began the long walk back up the mountain to the castle.
Bright and early the next morning, the wizard stood before his castle. He scratched his chin and rubbed his nose on his sleeve. It really IS a gloomy, old lump, he thought. With a sly smile and a bit of a flourish, he waved his magic wand and said a few magic words and made some odd scratches in the dirt at his feet before looking up again. A sparkling white castle with windows and doors of scintillating colors rose before him. Flowers, vine, and shrubberies grew all along the path and right up to the front door. Rabbits started poking their heads out of the greenery; butterflies and birds swooped low across the path to the new, inviting castle.
Instantly the Wizard was feeling happier as he went inside the castle and made more magical changes. Bright colors, huge chandeliers, tapestries & banners adorned the walls. The windows flew open to let fresh air create tiny whirlwinds across the stone floor (where fancy rugs were not covering it!). Hearing a noise, the Wizard went to the front door and threw them wide. Coming up the path were all the families of the village, chattering and smiling as they walked up the path." ===========================================================================
"That's it? That's the whole story? What kind of story was THAT? No dragons or ogres or goblins? No treasures or quests or death defying deeds?" "Go back to your tankard, Dobbin. This story wasn't for YOU."
Tarysaa sighed again as the two tables started tossing biscuits and insults at each other. "If only they knew the story AFTER the villagers all went inside that castle..."
Interesting, thank you!

Aydnkyi made a practically empty post...

Name: Schnocktirs Shieldcrusher
Race: Human (+1 to all rolled ability scores below)
Ability scores: 12 12 9 11 14 9

William Brackwater: Human Fighter - The Windward Isles
Tyrgram, the Butterfly Knight: Dwarf Warlock - Secret of Greenwold
Iòlinder Corrach: Half Elf War Cleric - Allansia Adventure
Valerius Sergius Publius: Dhampir Paladin - Vae Victus
Great! Waiting for your final application then - and I'll try to limit the amount of stiff breeze in the quest, I promise 😉
Hey there Painted, are applications still open on this campaign?
Unhappy that the market got rid of individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
Provide feedback!
Wish I had rolled for my character, this is my first attempt at playing here and was just playing it safe with point buy. Just for kicks...
I think I did better with point buy. :-)
Tarysaa Sōlus groaned as the villager at the next table started in on another wild tale... or was it a bedtime story... or how he wished things would be in Longsaddle? Why did non magic users always come up with these silly ideas?
===========================================================================
Coming up the path were all the families of the village, chattering and smiling as they walked up the path."
===========================================================================
Absolutely yes, Mister_Whisker! Just read that maybe 10.000 words of instructions I wrote and go on and apply! 😉 What could be easier?
I'm planning to close selection in about 6 days - you should have plenty of time to create a character you like.
