"...And who doesn't do that is an 'intruder'?" Solitude looks at the girl from Longsaddle with a gleam of admiration deep in her whiteless golden eyes "Indeed, the alarm went off when, after the southern alcove, the half-orc wizard led us in the other direction... If Roxana's hunch is right, we should have gone Left; we went Right and the alarm went off".
"Even if," the tiefling still has some doubts, "this interpretation fails to explain the last words: 'And be constant'..."
"Rash certainly isn't to blame if this idea didn't come to him - and I don't think you've suggested any better ones," Anita points out. "However," she sighs "if we wanted to concentrate on Elky's words, 'And be constant' could have been a final invitation not to deviate from the sequence of 'L' and 'R' suggested by the 'old saying'".
"Well," Gaer shrugs "seeing the effect going Right has had, when we go back down we'll obviously go Left... And if we come across other crossroads, if no other ideas come to us, we can always test the theory of Roxana - assuming we don't get 'exterminated' first".
"It's very possible," Rash says, scratching his chin. "So... like I was saying earlier, I think it would be in our best interests not to keep poking around down there with no idea what the hell we're doing. Even if you're right that a mnemonic is supposed to guide us on a safe path, I honestly don't trust anything that the guardians down there say right about now. I think we should take the time to stop by Longsaddle and pick up the supplies I need to summon a familiar to scout ahead for us. If the rest of you want to wait here Anita and I can go get the supplies, or if someone would like to accompany us that would be great aswell."
(OOC: I assume it's probably still morning or early-afternoon in-game, so three or four hours delay to collect the spell components and performing the ritual shouldn't make it too late to continue the adventure when we're finished).

Unhappy that the market got rid of individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
(OOC: It is definitely early morning. It was dawn when you had breakfast with what Obadiah and Roxana had hunted and shortly after you began the exploration of Level 2... Despite quarrels, reflections and explorations, it is certainly still morning. It probably wasn't even a full hour after dawn.)
Yeah... if no one objects, Rash has decided that the party needs a scout. He's going to collect some gold from one of the chests for the materials he needs and go to Longsaddle to buy them. He'll bring Anita with him, and anyone else who would like to come.
Roxana shakes her head. "I thought time was of the essence here! We left Longsaddle yesterday! And now you're going back for supplies?" She seems annoyed. "I'd have to hear some pretty good arguments of what we'll accomplish going back. What sort of scout are you going to get?"
She looks about the room. "Is anyone else thinking this is a good idea? Perhaps if we actually consider the problem. We can lead those spheres. Rash had a good thought, perhaps we can destroy one - if we actually hit it. Perhaps we just need to find the right passage. If not give up now."
"The kind of scout that wouldn't attract attention in this dungeon and can easily disappear into the cracks in the stone," the half-orc explains, clearly annoyed at this point. "Such as a spider, or perhaps a bat... I know we're in a hurry, but after the madness I just saw I think we would be better served by being careful and taking every possible precaution than hoping our interpretation of the butler's words will lead us safely to where we need to be... frankly, after we were told that the flag would ensure our safety and then getting run out chased by fireballs anyway, I'm taking everything that he says with a bucket of salt. As far as time is concerned... let me remind you that if we all die a horrible death then we definitely won't finish Lady Martha's quest to save the father of her child..."

"Ah, you suppose your scout will be immune to detect by whatever magic guards this place?" Roxana says. "I have no problem with you going back to Longsaddle Rash. I think I might just stay here. If others are willing to stay." She pauses to see what others might decide.
"if not immune to detection, at least maneuverable enough to avoid whatever comes after it relatively easily... and squeeze through spaces where a floating fire ball cannot follow," Rash replies. "If the rest of you want to wait here I should be back by around noon."
Rash will at this point take Anita and the two of them can go shopping in Longsaddle for the spell components. As they walk, he starts to let his mind wander. He realizes that the maze was starting to bring out his temper... and it was probably a good thing for him to get out of there before he started to take it out on his new friends.

In returning to Longsaddle, will Rash retrace the path he already knows? Or will he try to buy a minimum of time (perhaps half an hour) by trying to proceed in a straight line towards the Long Road through areas of wilderness that the party has not passed through before?
Anita knows where Longsaddle should be but never actually went there... She never left the den before, if nor for hunting. She will follow Rash on the way he knows best.
So Rash and Anita walk in shallow snow and the half-orc wizard starts to let his mind wander. He realizes that the maze was starting to bring out his temper... and it was probably a good thing for him to get out of there before he started to take it out on his new friends!
A single Solitude is just enough.
The frost that decorates the branches of the trees almost suggests a fairytale environment, but the snow that falls from the high branches when some trees are shaken too much in the course of the passage has something much more annoying and prosaic.
However, master and assistant reach the Long Road and begin to follow it north towards Longsaddle, knowing that they will now be able to walk more quickly and with less effort.
Anita tries to have a little conversation with Rash, now asking him something about his family, or his tribe, or his past, or a few more details about this important mission that has led him to the secret lair of the Zhentarim... and responding in return to any questions he eventually poses to her.

Spira grins. "I think we might be on to something. Elky also told us, a short while before he quoted the saying, that 'the exact path is important' and not to deviate from the path he led us to. Perhaps he considered that giving us that twisted clue knotted up in a hundreds of years out-of-date saying was an adequate approximation of 'leading us.'

"That's a good idea, Rash. It will give everyone a chance to rest up from our latest welcome by the hospitable owners of this place. If you don't mind, though, would you pick me up a healer's kit while you're there? I'd like to stay and tend to whoever needs care while you're gone, but I'd be grateful for a proper set of materials."

"I am concerned about the whole 'intruder' thing. Guess we did something wrong there."
Roxana muses over what Solitude said. "Could the saying just be a mnemonic? Like, the 'L' mean go left and the 'R' mean go right?"
She pauses to puzzle over that idea some more.

Hmmm... I think Rash is feeling that we'd better go "better safe than sorry" and stick with the route he knows best, unless Anita knows a better one.

Then that is what we shall do. Rash got the money needed for supplies from the chest... and maybe a little bit extra to get some decent food.

I'll just wait a moment to see if Obadiah, Aidwyn, or Spira will be joining Rash and Anita on their journey, then I'll narrate what happens.

But after maybe 10 minutes...
