Kragen pulls out his Holy Water and gestures towards Gneuman, Himself and Chadwick as tiny droplets fly forth and splash each of them. Muttering "Bless these righteous individuals as they seek to vanquish those that do evil deeds!"
Bless L1 on Gneuman, Kragen and Chadwick
"Chadwick, can you initiate the Drift Globe and illuminate the path ahead?"
You proceed ahead down the brightly lit hallway to find...nothing. You arrive to the well and can see yourselves reflected from the surface of the water below.
"Chadwick, can send the drift globe up the well shaft to see if there is anything on the well walls?"
"If we send someone below, we would possibly need the rope." pauses to think
"An alternative option to avoid sending someone down into a pool of water is to see if we can stop the source. I noticed just North of the promontory the Tower complex sits on, there is a stream that runs through the valley. It appears the stream has been diverted (not sure if it is natural or man made), or a part of it, through the promontory and appears to intersect with the well."
For clarity - the Drift Globe hovers 5' off of the ground and follows the user. It does not have capability to move it around as you like. A Mage Hand could be used to grasp it and move it about though.
Holding the Drift Globe at the edge of the hallway in the well shaft illuminates the entirety of the shaft. You can see that the walls are made of well fitted stones and have a slick covering on them as you would expect for a well in a temperate climate. Looking down, you see that the water is 20' below you with a mirror calm surface reflecting your images back at you.
Gneuman soon returns to the surface, wet and shivering....carrying a strange device.
The device is small and heavy for its size. It is about a foot long and the gears six inches in diameter. You can pick it up and guess it weighs about 15 pounds.
"Well done Cousin!" Helping him up "Let's get this to to a place we can review this device and see if the Tablet, and has any link to each other." Heads to back to room 14 with the vault door.
Kragen will leave Gnueman, Chadwick and Starker to the device in room 14 and head to the surface to inform Olar to stand down and inform the others on the find.
Starker: “From the plaque and the book we developed a set of 4 3 character strings. This device has 4 wheels. Perhaps by spinning the first three wheels to one of the aforementioned character strings the 4th wheel will spin of its own accord to a 4th character. Thus, we can generate 4 new characters (one for each line on the plaque). We can then try to see if we can use these as the settings of the dials in the vault door. I will try that. There remains some combinatoric ambiguity (which line’s character goes to which dial, which enigma dials are input and which are output) so this might take a few hours.
“Another possibility is that the 4 resulting characters are the key to the encryption of the diary. Perhaps someone might explore that whilst I am spinning dials and ringing the changes.”
Starker begins to experiment with the dials of the device. Turning any of the wheels affects the other wheels in some way. As described, there is combinatory ambiguity. Sometimes the other wheels turn in the same direction as the manipulated wheel. Sometimes the other wheels turn in the opposing direction. Sometimes, they don't move at all. The device moves smoothly with tiny clicks at each setting of the alphabet on the outer rim of the wheels. It appears that there is a set line made by the crossbar across what you perceive as the front of the wheels where the letters align as they click into place.
Setting the first three wheels to the character strings taken from the plaque and translated to Page - Character number on the page from the Diary you generate four letters of the alphabet. Starker then sets each of the combination locks to these letters. There are 24 combinations possible to set the locks with these letters. None open the vault door.
Chadwick will cast daylight with the driftglobe, then activates the hover feature.
"Kragen could you bless us before going in?'

"Cousin, lead on!"
The group heads toward the well

Diving takes 10 minutes. Diverting water could take days.

I believe the water is quite frigid, but Gneuman is willing to try to swim in the water, Since he has the captain's belt.
To Gnueman "Do you want to be lowered down or dive in??"
Do we still have the potion of water breathing? And if he does go down we should tie a rope to him.
"Both the potion and the rope would be appreciated, my friend."
Kragen Thinking himself… what good fortune we have, to have found 2 magical instruments to help us explore this place!! Tyr smiles upon us.
Starker rituals up Detect Magic just to check.
Starker only detects the items he already knows to be enchanted.
Kragen claps Gnueman on the shoulder. “All ready my friend, be careful” , “tug hard on the rope and we’ll pull you out!”

You can find this in Inventory: Rastagna’s Enigma

Do any of the 24 four letter strings form a word in elvish?
