"Very recently, within the last tenday. We don't know what caused it, but it started with him locking up King Gnerkli. And then the ravings about a shapechanger. We could make a sleep ray?, but they are locked in their chambers so we can't see them to hit them."
Biezdar butts into the conversation: "Same goes for sanity ray and straitjacket then. None of this would work unless we can get to see them at least. Listen to me now. We need to speak to your Kings anyway as we have an urgent matter that requires their attention. So naturally we will try to help that royal problem in order to speak to them. Where are they now?"

"Is there more that one way into the chamber perhaps? A way for us to sneak in?" Kosef is thinking the party could split up and have some people go through a sneaky way and the others come through the front.
Gor looks absolutely beside himself as Jayson says he can probably teach him the basics. He doesn't have time to think about it long, however. Within moments they're with the two new Gnomes, and there's a discussion about straightjackets or putting someone, the King, to sleep. When it seems there is no good, simple, straightforward way to do that, Gor leans in.
"Put him to sleep you say?" He says, reaching for his weapon. "That's easy. We sledge him. Right over the ol' dome, oah. He'll go right to sleep. Oh, a sneak you say? What if we dress up as these little fellows? They'll let us right in! Oh, wait, no, even better...have these two lead me up there as the Shapechanger. They can say they captured me and then I'll...bash him over the skull!"
"Just the one door, Along the corridor there, down the corridor on your right. If you reach the throne room you have gone too far. If you can cure him, we will gladly give you some gnomish magical creations"

Quin bows his head and stifles a chuckle at Gors plan, "Let's keep that as a plan B, huh Big Guy? I like where Jason was going with those questions though. I don't think the doppelganger ravings maybe as crazy as you think. I think the question we need to be asking is "How do we prove which one is the doppelganger?" What does anyone know about shapeshifters in general?

"Regardless I think we should do what Biezdar said and talk to them. We should talk to (will edit) first. If it were me, and I was taking somebodys place, I would try to throw suspicion off me by saying it was somebody else. What I'm saying is we shouldn't believe either one for now. Maybe we should look for more clues or maybe even a body. But we should make sure they don't leave their rooms. Can't risk a changing taking one of our places."

You know doppelgangers are shapechangers who take humanoid forms. They often take the form of soemome they have killed for a quick con, or if they want to really integrate into a group, they keep them alive and hostage as they can read surface thoughts so can become more like the person.
Biezdar picks up Gors way of thinking: "Exactly that Gor! That is what we could do. Say (talking to Fiddlestib and Gobblebrat) why would Kings suddenly become afraid of a Shapeshifter? Maybe they are not crazy, maybe just scared to death. We need to talk to them to figure out what they know. If there is a shapeshifter around, then I second Gors idea to sacrifice his blood to the god of death. Then i assume god of death puts a good word for us to gnome kings and we get some stuff for the major"
Biezdar goes after Jayson to talk to Kings.

"Yep ! Maybe a doppelganger soon and a dragon later!" Quin adds enthusiastically. The spirit of the adventure making the young man forget his troubles and puts a spring in his step as he bounds off after the other two.
"I think I can handle the lock if we need to but maybe we should just talk through the door first."
Jayson gently knocks on the door and calls through it.
“Your Majesties? My name is Jayson Warmlight. I’m a bard from Phandalin. My companions and I have traveled a fair distance to visit your community. Would you permit us to speak with you face to face, please? The matter is rather urgent.”
You get a response "While I appreciate your urgent matter, I am not going to open the door. There is a shapechanger in our midst and so I am keeping us both safe. I am more than happy to discuss through the door however"
Map: You are at the top of the tunnel, with a locked door symbol at the end. The plain white door leading to the top of the ledge with the book in the inventors room is an unlocked door.
”As you wish, Your Majesty. We have come to seek the aid of one of your people’s ingenious technological wonders. My friends and I need a game-changer to eliminate the dragon that is terrorizing the region. Phandalin’ townmaster sent us to seek your aid. We hope that we can possibly come to some kind of amenable arrangement.”
Jayson crosses his fingers and hopes for a positive reply.
There is a few seconds of silence, followed by "If you eliminate the shapechanger then I will happily give you a wonder." A second voice pipes in "As will I, seeing as I will finally be freed from this damn chair." "Love, you know it is for your own safety. I know you don't believe in the danger and so would wander around, but I was attacked by that rug in the throne room, which turned into a jug as I escaped, narrowly keeping my life. I am certain it is what ate Orryn and Warryn"
Biezdar suddenly goes serious. "We go check the rug, ready to fight, however from what he said it wont be it anymore. We should confirm with other gnomes if there were victims as he said. If they were then i think we should believe them and check the premises before someone else dies" Biezdar would like to go back to two inventors and confirm about orryn and warryn.

They do confirm that they have both gone missing. But also seem more concerned about fixing the kings insanity before worrying about the missing gnomes, promising further magical trinkets if you can help.

"Plan B, got it. Oah." Gor says, nodding resolutely. "Always good to have a Plan B. You're a genius, Orson, really. Ah, talk to them..."
Gor pauses and seems to consider this for a moment, figuring in where talking fits into his reality and his worship of Lodis.
"Talking may be good. Why, though, wouldn't we offer up blood for the god of death?"

Jayson smiles at Gor.
”Regicide makes a poor impression. We need these folks to help us or we’ll end up as nothing more than noteworthy dragon-chow.”
Jayson begins to move down the corridor as directed by Dribbledrop and Bumperstump.
