Xanrym listens to the conversation, and after Sir Grover's odd behavior, he looks over to Avery (and Liarin, if she also entered the building). He doesn't say anything, but his expression is a mixture of surprise, concern, and uncertainty.
"Perhaps you can help dispel some rumors we heard back at the last town," Avery asks, "We ran into several groups of people, almost like I was seeing refugees from the battlefield almost, how odd things were happening in these parts, that people were changing. They had fear, true fear in the voice and their eyes, could you shine some light on those tales?"
"Truly a pleasure to meet you both," Theldrin says to Julienne and Darnell with a smile and a polite bow. "My name is Theldrin. Perhaps we shall stop by to view your weavings while we are here, if time allows." He feels relieved to have met some locals who at least seem normal.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
While Avery talks to Sir Grover, Xanrym keeps his eyes on the other two men. Do they seem at all disturbed or confused by this conversation? Relaxed or afraid? Do they seem like they know something that they're afraid to say?
(OOC: Ha! Apparently Xanrym finds them to be inscrutable, or he just finds his attention drifting off to the story that he was reading on the walk to the village.)
Xanrym - You don’t get a feel for their temperament. But from their relaxed nature in armour and with weapon, you can tell they’re fairly capable.
Avery - Sir Grover smiles. “I think these tales have been exaggerated somewhat.” He laughs with the other two men. “The old man in the grove and the old widow are certainly unapproachable in their own ways.” Then his face darken. “ There is of course the two vagrants on the cottage by the lake. Sneaking around town at night with hoods on.” He and the other men look angry now. “But we will deal with them soon, as soon as the mayor gives me his blessing to dispel them from town. Then everything will be clear.”
He shakes his head and looks at Avery. “But of course I should give you a letter to pass on to our mutual friend.” He hands Avery a note he scribbles out. “Now I imagine you must all be off, farewell.” He returns to his writing.
Avery accepts the note, bows and leaves the building and joins the party outside. "I think we should make our way to the chapel and see to our friend's leg here, before we see to our own comforts at the inn. Avery will avoid any conversation about inside with Sir Grover until they are well out of ear shot of them.
Avery takes up the handles and pushes the cart through the town and towards the chapel. He continues to scan the people as they pass, looking at their demeanor and mannerism, trying to pick up anything that stands out (Perception: 5; Investigation: 16). He keeps a steady but easy pace as they go through the town, before turning north towards the chapel. He pushes the cart through the chapel's courtyard, and up to the front entrance where he parks the cart.
As he pushes the cart, he informs the group what he saw with the meeting with Sir Grover, in a low voice so that only they can hear. "Be cautious my friends, all is not as it appears. Sir Grover stated how the tales they have heard are exaggerated, he mentioned and old man in the grove and the old widow are certainly unapproachable in their own ways, and two vagrants on the cottage by the lake. Sneaking around town at night with hoods on seemed to darken his and two men in the office with him. Might be someone to follow up on. The two men I saw in that office were not what I would call professional if they were serving Sir Grover. "
"I hope the cleric or healer is home, and perhaps they can shed some light on the rumors we have heard." Avery knocks on the doors.
Theldrin walks along next to the cart, keeping pace so that he's near Maajid and giving him a reassuring smile as the group moves through town. He can't help but feel a growing sense of unease but soon shrugs it off, happy to arrive at the chapel door.
The door of the temple open and a young woman greets you with a smile. Petite and bright, with freckles and long golden hair. “Welcome strangers, may Merrika’s love bless your harvest.” She sees Maajid lying there and looks concerned. “Please come in, you’re looking a little worse for wear. Let me see that leg.” Maajid smiles and limps in after her.
Theres a few people milling about the temple, but they all clearly serve the young woman. She talks as she starts to see to Maajid. “Good to meet you all, my name is Misha. Please feel free to make yourselves comfortable, this may take some time.” She continues her work as she chats to you. “What brings you all to Orlane I wonder?.”
She continues her work as she chats to you. “What brings you all to Orlane I wonder?.”
Xanrym smiles pleasantly and tells part of the truth, "We are Maajid's escort. He was attacked on the road a mile or so from Orlane, and -- praise Merrika! -- we were able to save him. Unfortunately, we are not skilled enough healers to cure his wounds completely. Maajid hired us to escort him here so that he could seek help at this temple.
"It is a beautiful temple. Do you know how long it has been here? I'm fascinated by the history of places!"
"The temple is wonderful isn't it?" She looks around the temple in awe. "To be honest i'm only new here. The last priest would have known more about the history but he... he's gone." She looks troubled at that. "I had only just started here at the time and had to quickly learn all the ins and outs of being a priestess" she laughs. "I didn't really have time to learn all about the temple. But i can tell you about Merrika if you like, she's what's important, not the shrines we build for her. She cares more about the trees outside than the building itself anyway."
"Hmm, attacked you say, how awful. Just awful." She looks concerned. "There's been a little bit of that lately to be honest. The Dim Forrest is full of beasts and monsters, could be from there maybe?" She looks to you all. "Maybe you all are here to rid us off the forrest's denisons." She looks at you all expectantly.
Avery listens to what Misha is describing. "I was passing through, coming here to call on Sir Grover from a comrade-in-arm, when I met these fellow travelers, and helped to defend our friend here when he was attacked. If I may ask, these monsters in the woods, how long has this been happening? We have heard rumors, but I am trying to get to the fact of the matter. How long has the priest been missing, and you mention this "there," what is this there you speak of? At the moment I am not employed, but I would be willing to see into this matter, with your blessing of course. I may be able to convince my traveling companions."
(Forgot to add as we're moving up to the chapel: "Be cautious my friends, all is not as it appears. On the walk to the temple, Xanrym looks thoughtful and a little troubled. When Avery speaks, he asks as delicately as he can, "Avery, I haven't dealt much with soldiers, but...did Sir Grover seem...OK...to you? I mean, a few of the things he said and a couple of moments when he seemed dazed or confused. I thought that he might be sick. Or -- I don't know -- like he was in danger and trying to be careful about what he said. Can we check the note he gave you for your mutual acquaintance? Maybe he tried to pass us a secret message through that note?"
Xanrym also checks with the others, "Did you see anything else odd outside the Constable's Quarters while Avery and I were inside?"
(OOC: I'll try to avoid going back to the conversation "on the way to the temple" now that we're already at talking to the priestess at the temple, but I just wanted to ensure that the party exchanged information like this.)

Theldrin describes the meeting with Julienne and Darnell, adding that they seemed normal and suggesting the party maybe look in on them at some point to see how they're doing.
Ok we are currently having two conversations at two different times, which is fine. I'm going to continue with the conversation with Misha, feel free to also talk on the way to the temple as well.
"Well to be honest, i haven't got any work for you per say, i just thought maybe if you wanted to go hunting in the Dim Forrest, you may be able to collect some bounties on goblins and the like." She goes back to her work on Maajid's leg. "Hmm, i'm sorry but it does seem i have used all my light from Merrika for today. I can arrange a room for you here, Mr Maajid, and you can stay the night. In the morning i should be able to heal your leg right up." She smiles brightly, then looks to the rest of you. "I'm sorry but i cannot offer you all a room as well. But i'm sure you could find accommodation in town at one of the inns. The Golden Grain is wonderful i've heard."
Maajid seems like he would be open to staying the night at the temple.

"Yes, he did appear off, and I did not have a good feeling about those two in there, almost like they were watching him to make sure he does what he is supposed to do. I have seen the note, and it does raise some concern that I may have to look into later."
