I think what I'd like to try for the rest of this encounter for Balen is go right back to basics.
That is, describe what you would like Balen to do, and then I'll let you know what, if anything to roll.
((sorry this post isn't too very thought out. got busy at school today))
@SunDial ... your last post is not in line with our 'back to basics' approach. My hope was that we could work together to get rules-accurate posts out there that did not detract from the game.
I love that you are wildly imaginative ... but wildly imaginative and does-not-listen-well are not a good combination for me. I fully admit, I have a need to keep the cats herded when it comes to the book-rules end of things, and you are proving to be among the unherdiest of unherdable cats I have played with.
I can sympathize that I come at the game, rules-wise, from a very strict standpoint. I can also say that my DM-ing style is not meshing well — at all — with your style of play.
In any event, it is not fun for me to keep trying (& failing to) rein you in.
This tutorial-approach only works if we are effectively communicating ... and I'm not sure that we can get there from here.
This is an official wag of the finger (and in addition to the wag of the finger related to Balen's IC-conduct we discussed via PM, your second).
Unfortunately, having received two wags of the finger ... you will no longer be continuing with this tale.
... I have a question regarding PbP and reactions - how do we handle those?
... does it have to be declared in my turn as a possibility or I can do it after you write the turn summary? Seems silly either way, but how will you do it?
Both answers work for me.
If you have a condition ahead of time that makes sense ... I don't mind if you give me a set of 'standing orders' within which to use the reaction. Similarly, if the round gets summed up, and you determine after seeing the round summary that you would have liked to use a reaction, just let me know. As DM I have an infinite supply of Handwavium which can be applied to rectify these situations.
The only time things get a little weird are the abilities that contain the wording 'after the dice are thrown, but before the results are known.' It gets weird because when we play the game in this PbP format, there really isn't a time where we can satisfy that requirement. The very same post that contains the rolls, ends up also being the post where you learned the outcome of the roll. Since that is a limitation of the venue and not an active attempt to twist some sort of advantage out of the game ... those 'see the roll, but not know the result' abilities can still be used even after the post that sums up the round is made.
Unfortunately, having received two wags of the finger ... you will no longer be continuing with this tale.
Very unfortunate =(
I can understand the frustration due to differences, but I wish things would have worked out better.
I think that SunDial has a lot of enthusiasm, and it's possible that some communication had been crossed on expectations. As someone who sometimes has communication troubles IRL, I sympathize if that was the case.
However, it's ultimately your game, Science, and it's what you feel comfortable with. DMing is a hard thing to do already, speaking as someone who used to be a "forever DM" during my college years, and so I similarly sympathize the need to put hard-stops sometimes.

@Ashen_Age ... Here is the IC thread we have been using.
I linked it to the most recent post but you are more than welcome to peruse that-which-has-gone-before.
It is not, however, mandatory reading. So here is the 30-second recap:
A group of heroes met basically upon their first day in Havenford and discovered a murderous cult performing some sort of summoning ritual. They defeated the cultists, the death dog they summoned, and also an imprisoned spined devil they found who had been locked away in a hidden chamber for years and years.
The group reported their findings to the Baron that runs the town, but after some spectacularly bad negotiating, the Baron rescinded a job offer he had made ... and the heroes decided to go it on their own. Currently, they are looking into rumors of nearby goblin tribes becoming united under a self-styled goblin king, a fella named Grimgnaw. They were headed in the general direction of the Shadowfang Caverns when they were accosted by a group of bullywugs and a giant toad. This is the encounter that is just wrapping up.
In character, the group has had a bit of churn with the roster:
A bard, Faen, did not make it out of the encounter with the cultists [the player, however, stayed on and created a new character. The elven wizard, Rinn]
A rogue, Balen, was removed from the tale [I removed the player]
A cleric, Ichep, was removed from the tale [This player withdrew after Balen's player was removed]
Fair. I mean, Rinn might have a tressym, but Toads can be all the things.

Unfortunately, this will result in me also stepping away from the game. I respect ScienceVersusAdventure’s decision and have made my own.
I wish you all the greatest fun on your future adventures!
Sad human noises
Now that we are down to three players I have opened the game up for recruitment, gang.
New players & characters will be inbound to join any who remain.
Sure! But I think we can easily finnish the encounter with 3 players. All of the baddies

Looks like we've lost our cleric as well. That's too bad.
And looks like Rinn can't hit the side of a barn with his spells. Another nat 1.
Hey, I have rolled two 1s with bears bite attack, soooooo, Lowrollaz!
I think I've rolled one or two double-digit attack rolls this entire game so far.
EDIT: that's two 5s in a row. Completely wasting the cleric's Bless.
I switched out my digital dice because I was getting low rolls. Not that it matters in reality lol.
Yeah, DDB character sheet should have a dice jail.
^^ Are you guys rolling form your desktops or from within the DDB app?
Well ... as virtual dice go ... that's the closest thing to reality I have seen. In my tabletop days, I used had dice that I refused to use.
Let me down a few too many times, grumble, grumble.
Also ... a proud 'Low-Rollers' welcome to Ashen_Age!
One of the new players joining the tale after the re-recruit.
Desktop via the character sheet, for me.
