Noticing the looks from some of the townsfolk at the goblin noises, Merrick coughs in embarrassment and positions himself so Minraker is in between them and him.He peers round the Minotaur's legs until they've past, re-emerging and glancing behind nervously. "Perhaps that wasn't the wisest thing to do in town."

Rastrin is eager to finally be out of town and traveling towards Umbrage Hill. Once they get out of the town limits, he pulls the glaive off his back and uses it almost like a walking stick at times and as a machete to clear the path at appropriate times. All the while, he maintains his cheery attitude and is more than willing to chat about whatever the others want to talk about.
As you all set out, you unfortunately didn't notice there were some Kobolds expertly hiding nearby in some bushes, and you've been ambushed! Although, rather fortunately, someone who you've never seen before, yet clearly isn't a threat to you, ran up out of the shadows on their own, and managed to kill one of them, dropping their numbers from three to two.
Amidst all the chaos, you didn't notice one of your current party members slip away.
For anyone who ends up reading this and would like to know,
I made the party roll a perception check behind the scenes, as otherwise, it would've just taken too long in my opinion.
I was feeling a potential problem coming from one of the party members, so I decided to remove them as they wouldn't be a good fit for how I like to tell stories. Luckily I already had someone waiting for an opening, so I decided that this would be an opportune moment to let them in. Silvercoins, please introduce your character with the above roleplay in mind, as well as the other player character's appearances.
Like many of you, I love playing D&D. Although I tend to prefer hosting 1x1 campaigns, less scheduling conflict involved.
If you want a DM who will try his damndest to play with your characters in mind, feel free to contact me. I have too many stories circulating in my head and I want to tell them all to someone in a way they can interact with the worlds I make.
A blonde haired dwarf approaches from the bushes holding a now bloody longsword with both hands. He's about average height for a dwarf, looks maybe 30, and is wearing a dull red bandana. His lamellar armor is similarly colored with small straps of leather running here and there over the wood and metal.
Without looking away from the other Kobolds, he says to the group, "Hello. I went looking for some work in town and saw a notice for a missing person. When I asked around, I was told there was already a group looking for her and came as fast as I could."
His grip tightens around the blade, "If I could perhaps join you after this battle, I would be most grateful."
Surprised,, Roven quickly sizes up the dwarf whose timely intervention turned the tide of their ambush. "Your help is timely and appreciated," he shouts amidst the fray, his sword meeting Kobold steel. "We're indeed in search of Adabra Gwynn. Your skills could be a boon to our quest." Roven adds, "Your proposal to join us is welcome, assuming we survive this encounter together, but first, let's deal with these Kobolds," he says.
At the rear of the party, seemingly oblivious to all that is going on, is a diminutive halfling decked in chainmail. His shock of fiery red hair is short and messy, and he has a chain round his neck that holds a holy symbol of Pelor. Under the mail, you see he is wearing the typical clothing associated with clerics. A mace hangs at his belt, as his attention is to the rear, looking back towards Phandalin.

Minrakar looks surprised to see the audacious kobolds leap out to attack them, during the day no less! He thought they were more of a subterranean, nocturnal creatures, but that dragon that moved into the area really must have been really making a mess of things. He hefts his heavy glaive, ready to defend himself and the others against the little goblinoids, but he'd much rather not kill something so small unless they attacked first. Maybe they just wanted talk?
He narrows his eyes as the dwarf suddenly appears. Could this dwarf be part of some elaborate ploy to rob them all with the kobolds' help? He had heard of such heists in stories before. Oh well, they needed to take care of the kobolds before they could worry about the dwarf.
The Kobolds seem surprised that the Dwarf showed up in their own right, but that doesn't stop them, as they target the slowest to react among you! Though... They also seem to split up. Perhaps a tactic they were trying? Either way, most, if not all of you knew they fought better in packs...
(Just a notice for the future, for smoother combat I will do all calculations first and send the post with what they do if they hit or not. Anything that you may have that would alter the outcome before or after it happens, you must do before or after I send the post. For your sake, I will include what I rolled outside of D&D Beyond.)
Kobold 1 runs up to Merrick, its eyes full of uncertainty, and doubt that it was even doing the right thing. "Sorry big-feet." It says as it swings it's dagger at you! Although it's clear its nerves got to it in some way as your armor deflects its weak attack. (13 to hit)
Kobold 2 runs up to the Dwarven newcomer! Clearly more confident than the other Kobold. "Smelly stone-eater! Shiny pretty stones are ours! Not yours!" Its voice clearly full of resentment towards Dwarves. But, in its anger, it misses you entirely! (12 to hit)
The turn order is as follows for the rest of the combat: Roven (18), Minrakar (Players go first in ties, 17), Kobold 2 (17), Kobold 1 (11), Merrick (higher dex, 3), "Red" (lower dex, 3)

Seeing the Kobolds scatter and target his allies, Roven quickly measures the situation, capitalizing on their split focus, while he positions himself to protect Merrick and the Dwarf, ready to counter the Kobolds' assault.
With his sword ready for action, Roven attacks the Kobold nearest to him. His intent is to draw attention away from his companions, leveraging his combat experience to safeguard them.
Roven remains vigilant, prepared to shift his defensive stance to intercept any further attacks, ensuring he stands as a bulwark between danger and his newfound allies.

As the kobolds engage and promptly fail to damage anyone, Minrakar sighs and plods over to the kobold attacking Merrick. Using the flat of the blade of his glaive, Minrakar grunts as he swings his heavy weapon to the kobold in an attempt to knock it out instead of killing it. He wasn't going to kill someone as practically defenseless as these kobolds without a really good reason to.
Minrakar manages to knock out the Kobold attacking Merrick, as it drops to the ground. Roven, unfortunately, fails to hit either of the Kobolds and doesn't draw either of their attention.
The remaining Kobold, seeing its ally fall in battle, squeaks in fear, and disengages, using its full movement speed to run away. Having seemingly decided it was not worth the effort anymore. Can you blame 'em? It was a kinda unbalanced fight in the first place. Though, not completely useless, as I taught you all how combat will work going forward, hopefully.
With the only remaining Kobold trying to flee, something at the back of all your minds tells you that... Maybe, just maybe you shouldn't go after this lone Kobold, and keep on with your journey. Though... On the other hand, you can capture the one you knocked out and question it about the dragon. After all, Kobolds worship dragons like gods, no?

Merrick pokes his head out from behind his shield and looks down at the unconscious kobold. Flipping it over his back his eyes narrow at the creature. "Hey. What's with the "big-feet" nonsense." He looks closer at it. "And why were you apologising?" Shaking his head he looks towards the other fleeing kobold and shrugs. "We've got one, I suppose. Anybody got any rope? I suggest we take them with us while they're having a little nap. We can talk to them later after we bring Adabra back to town."
Roven nods at Merrick’s plan, retrieving a rope from his pack. “Securing this Kobold might give us valuable information,” he states, handing the rope to Merrick. “We’ll ensure fair treatment.”
He then focuses on their main objective. “Securing Adabra’s safety remains our priority. And then, we can extract valuable insights from our captive,” Roven asserts.
As the goblin is tied up, Minrakar silently eyes the newcomer. Both he and Roven talked fancy and used big words, but that wasn't a problem. The dwarf seemed fairly eager to help out, as was evident by the fact that he was so willing help out with the kobolds. Making up his mind, Minrakar trots over and reaches out a hand in welcome. "I'm Minrakar. Great to meet you!"
Gesturing to the unconscious kobold, he says, "I can pack him around if you change your mind. He looks pretty light."
Merrick grins at the newcomer. “That was a timely intervention, my friend. Merrick Smallfoot at your service.” He holds out a hand to the dwarf. “We should be vigilant, there could be more skulking around.”
You make the rest of your journey without issue as soon as you're all finished talking. Arriving at the location you were directed to, you see, built on the slope of Umbrage Hill is an old stone windmill surrounded by an iron fence. Getting closer, you notice a large winged monster with a spiky tail trying to knock down the windmill’s front door, and are immediately able to tell that this is a manticore. A woman, who you could easily assume is who you came to help, appears in a second-floor window, waves at you, and yells, “A little help?!”
The Manticore hasn't noticed any of you yet, but its actions indicate that it isn't out to harm the midwife, at least not if she doesn't try to stop it from getting what it wants. They are more that of an animal trying to gain access to food that it smells.

Hefting the bound Kobold over his shoulder, the dwarf shakes Merrick's hand and replies, "Well met Minrakar and Merrick Smallfoot. I'm told my name means "Young Stonemallet" in common, though the few townsfolk I've worked with have also taken to calling me, "Red."
A smile forms at the nickname, clearly in reference to his armor and head wrap.
"Either is fine and I agree that we should stay on guard in the wilds."
Dropping down to the ground at the sight of the creature trying to force the door the windmill, Merrick motions the others to do the same. "Didn't the town master say creatures had been driven out by the dragon?" He glances round the party then points at the mill. "Let's give it a dragon to worry about, then." With a grin he says the word "Marvelo" and the sound of slow, large beating wings appears in the air above the party.
