Welcome to Baldur’s Gate, a veritable nest of rats and vipers clinging to the rocky slopes overlooking the Chionthar River. From their high perches in the Upper City, the local nobles — known as patriars — gaze down with veiled contempt upon the common rabble in the grimy Lower City, which hugs the foggy harbor. The whole of Baldur’s Gate reeks of blood, crime, and opportunity. One can easily fathom why pirates and traders are drawn to this place like flies to a carcass.
I am looking for four well-balanced adventurers to take on this quest. I will be using the Players Handbook, DM’s Guide, monsters and other things from Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus.
Please submit 1st level characters as designed from the Player’s Handbook and using the D&D Beyond Character Record sheet. Characters will be created with the standard array for attributes, and standard gear with maximum starting wealth to purchase gear. (Ex. Bard 200gp, Druid 80gp, Sorcerer 120gp etc.)
My preference is for players that can commit to daily post including weekends. Though I understand that “In Real Life” (IRL) gets in the way from time to time. It does that to me too. (I know how dare it!)
You need to be an experienced player. This campaign is not for newbies. It is difficult, particularly early on. And though I will not be following the Adventure Book to the letter, I will be following it close enough to where it will be quite the challenge.
Also, I am looking for players that have not played in the campaign before whether online or face-to-face.
I utilize Google Slides for maps. This way players can interact with the maps. Also, it is free, so you don’t need to buy anything. But you would need to be able to access Google Slides, preferably on a PC as it does not work as well on mobile devices. You can see the maps on mobile devices, so there are ways around it. So, please let me know what type of devices you are using for Play-By-Post campaigns.
And finally, I am looking for players that are not deeply committed to running in or playing in a lot of other campaigns. I am currently running three and playing in one including face-to-face both D&D and Pathfinder. And one of the ones I am running is Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus. This campaign will likely be the last one that I take on until another one is completed, because I need to be available to be there for IRL things as well. I am looking for players with similar commitments. So, please let me know how many campaigns you are currently invested in.
I am sure I have forgot something, so please ask any questions.
Will multiclassing be allowed? (Asking, because even if almost everyone uses it (and I like it a lot) it is still an Optional Rule....)
Anyway...
Name: Khessa Cabbagefield Race: Human Class: Fighter 1 Background: Folk Hero Brief backstory/biography: Khessa was born to a peasant family, in a small village. At the age of 20 she is kidnapped, with her family, during a raid of drow slavers. With some luck she manages to free herself, along with some other slave from her village. After a a dangerous journey in the underground, during which she is forced on several occasions to defend herself in the hostile and unfamiliar environment (risking her life, but also honing her fighting skills), she manages to lead the slaves back to the surface. With her family still lost in drow hands, she becomes an adventurer, an hero of the people in particular; she will, when possible, help the defenseless (waiting to be able to help, some day, her family) and will satisfy the curiosity of the world that she had always had...
How many campaigns am I currently invested in, you ask?
Well, I'm currently invested in 5 (1 of which has kind of stalled, but I'm hoping it picks up again, so I'd say it's still 5). I don't know if that's a lot or a little for you, but I can assure you that in each of the Campaigns I join, it's never a problem for me to maintain the frequency of posts you've asked for - even on my worst day, I always manage to find time to post at least once in each Campaign I'm involved in.
Hi - I’m interested in joining - am looking to play in a group, have been dming my own campaign for a while now and can definitely commit to regular posts. I enjoy role play and am comfortable with building a narrative through posts.
I can be flexible in character preference but have started with a Dragonborn fighter I intend to run as an Eldritch Knight (assuming from your post that the PHB is the only available source for character creation).
Would be great to hear from you and am happy to send through anything you need.
Will multiclassing be allowed? (Asking, because even if almost everyone uses it (and I like it a lot) it is still an Optional Rule....)
No problem with multiple classes. D&D Beyond seems to handle it well. I understand why 5E kept it out of the Basic and Core rules. They were shooting for “Keep It Simple”, which I appreciate. Too many rules are simply too many rules. But Multiclassing has been around since 1E.
Name: Dweblin "Dwebe" Wrightson Race: Half Elf Class: Ranger lvl 1 Background: Salior - Balder's Gate Brief backstory/biography:Dweblin grew up on the River Reaching, his father running a river caravan service from Hills Edge along the river to Balder's Gate. After his father retired and sold the barge Dweblin was invited to stay on with the current crew. He has worked as ship hand, lookout and river scout helping to repel attacks along the stretch through the Reaching Woods. Dweblin and his crew have just arrived with a caravan at the Balder's gate port and is in town for shore leave while the captain secures a load heading back.
Thank you for your consideration. I've played DnD for tears no started with the red box back in '78 and played solid through 3.5 When 4E came out we switched gaming systems and have just return to DnD within the last couple of years. I currently run a once a month homebrew campaign, play in one play-by-post game and in one live game that meets every other weekend. This will be my first adventure set in the Baldar's Gate setting, never played the video games.
Story | Ren has no clear understanding where he came from. All the memories he has are based around growing up and living in the Grand Temple of Bahamut in Sapphire City. Having now come of age he has started to push the boundaries with his Elder Brothers of the Temple seeking answers as he suspects they know more about his origins than he does. After a particular altercation with his Lesson master, "Master Legrin, I can't keep on staying here, I am driven to know more about the Children of Bahamut", Ren's temple peers agree and are becoming frustrated themselves. After a sleepless night Ren approaches the Grand Master of the Temple. Not a usual thing for acolytes to do. After a closed door meeting with Ren and the Temple Masters it is decided Ren will travel to the Temple of Bahamut and seek his answers ...
Story | I have spent almost all my life under the tutelage of Master Orbos Strangefellow, house wizard to a noble family in the grand city of Waterdeep. My days have been full of chores and studies, until last week. My master has sent me on a journey to Baldur's Gate to pick up some spell components from a shop called the Sorcerous Sundries. Having just disembarked from my ship I now seek a room for a few nights while I do my shopping and await a return vessel.
Placeholder. I’ll finish up this application sometime tomorrow evening.
Currently thinking of playing a drow, will either do Rogue or Warlock. (More details to come)
Ive been dying to find a slow paced rp heavy group. I’m currently wrapping up my own pbp campaign. If I’m accepted into this, it would be the fifth game counting irl games.
Just so that I have it right: character creation only uses PHB? Or are other sourcebooks allowed?
Descent into Avernus has been on my wanting to play list for a long time because it looks awesome. I'm currently in two PbP campaigns but one post weekly while the other has slowed down to post every 3 days or so.
Any particular reason for standard array as opposed to point buy?
In any case I'll brainstorm something and come back to this. If solely PHB, then I'm thinking a Cleric or Paladin. With going into hell, that invites a lot of potential RP.
Backstory Details: Though my parents did their best to raise me right, I have always had this overwhelming need to be truly free. To do what I want, whenever I want to do it. This led me down darker paths than what my parents had in mind for me. I left home years ago because I did not want my parents to get wrapped up in my shenanigans. Though they don't understand me, I still love them and do not want them getting hurt because of something I did. Living on my own has taught me a lot about the ways of surviving the streets, mainly how not to get caught.
I am currently running a campaign IRL every other Saturday. It's a combination of LMoP, DoIP, the 3 books after DoIP, and a handful of epic level one-shots from DM's Guild to make a 1st-20th level campaign that I've titled The Guild. I am also playing in a Spelljammer campaign every other Wednesday evening. I really appreciate your consideration for this campaign. 2 IRL games is not enough D&D to keep me satisfied. I'm really looking for something to fill the gaps in between IRL sessions.
I am able to access Google slides anytime throughout the day as well as Dndbeyond and Discord (if you intend to use). I have access to my work pc from 6:30am-3pm CST Mon-Fri and I have access to my personal laptop all other times. I also have a 6-month-old baby that I care for in the evenings, so my responses might not be immediate, but they will happen that day.
Just so that I have it right: character creation only uses PHB? Or are other sourcebooks allowed? Just PHB to keep it simple.
Any particular reason for standard array as opposed to point buy? May be. For many years I have ran Pathfinder campaigns using Point Buys systems. Here at D&D Beyond the Standard Array is another option. I used it in both my other D&D Beyond campaigns, and the DM used it in the one I am playing in, so I am sticking with it here as well.
Name: Iólinder Race: Wood Elf Class: Cleric, War domain Background: Hermit (background feature Discovery is up to the DM) Backstory: Open warfare is anathema to wood elves. Why go on the offensive when the safety of the woods facilitates ambush tactics from hidden archers? Thus the ideology of war has stagnated among the wood elves who are content to stay in their woodland realms, only needing to defend when the occasion arises. This is complete bollocks according to Iólinder. Such a passive approach all but guarantees that one day an insurmountable force will rise up against which the wood elves will be unable to defend. "If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles" is one of the axioms the Red Knight teaches. To that end Iólinder has been studying the art of warfare as practised by the denizens of the Nine Hells (the less said about how demons fight, the better). Exiled from the green forests for indulging in infernal scrolls and treatises, Iólinder now finds himself venturing to Baldur's Gate to further his knowledge on war.
Name: Ossian Race: Half-Elf Class: Bard Background: Urchin Backstory: Ossian has fond memories of his elven mother singing him to sleep as a toddler. Later, after she passed and he was sent to live with his human father he fell in with a rough crowd. As a teen he was dared to break into the neglected mansion of a famous musician who was out on tour. While looking for something to nab, he was distracted by a beautiful lyre that seemed just like what his mother would play. He felt drawn to it and somehow playing it came as second nature, tapping into some magic that his mother perhaps possessed and passed down to her infant child. This was fortunate for Ossian because the musician, who was at home, was so impressed with his playing that, rather than have the child arrested,, he took Ossian in and trained him, revealing the hidden magic in song. But the musician died before he could train Ossian enough to leave for one of the bardic colleges and he finds himself a restless outcast once more.
This is my take on creating a rogue-substitute with a bard who can do some support for the team as well.
Born the nameless third son of a high ranking drow house, Vydar was destined to sacrificed to Lolth the day he came into the world. However as fate would have it, a small group of adventurers previously captured while exploring the underdark were to be killed in honor of the spider goddess that same day. Fortunately for all, these adventurers refused to go down without a fight. It seemed the party's rouge had escaped capture, and returned to free her companions. She'd even managed to steal back their weapons. What transpired happened in a blur. She freed her companions, and returned their weapons allowing them to fight for escape. In the midst of the fray, she noticed the child. Despite the risks of taking him, she couldn't bring herself to leave the child and stole him off the alter on which he was destined to die on. Within what seemed like mere seconds, the party fought back their drow captors. However, many were lost in the ettempt. Nera, the half-elf rogue, and two of her companions miraculously managed to escape. With luck, they found their way back to the surface.
Now possessing a child, and grieving the loss of her comrades, Nera gave up adventuring for a quiet life. However, she didn't entirely give up her trade. As the young drow grew, she trained him in stealth and cunning. She was also the one who gave him his name, as he likely never received one from his true family. Despite the love she showed him, Vydar no one else seemed to accept the young drow. In fact, the half-elf often had insults and blows alike thrown her way by many townsfolk who saw him in her care. Though it never seemed to bother her, it caused Vydar to become bitter. Bitter towards both those who hated him for what he was, and his own kind.
Because of the constant hostility towards Nera and Vydar, the two traveled often in order to avoid conflict. They lived on the streets half the time, though Nera clearly didn't mind. It seemed she was used to that kind of life. However, there constant teetering on the edge of poverty only caused Vydar's bitterness to grow. On top of this, Nera had seemed to constantly get in fights over trivial things. For instance, any time she saw thugs picking on helpless individuals, she just had to get involved despite Vydar's groans.
Vydar stayed in Nera's care until he was the age of 16. It had been a day like any other. They came across some thugs trying to take advantage of a young girl. As usual, Nera couldn't let this slide. However, this time, it got out of hand. A half-elf who harbors a dark elf? Seeing this the brutes decided she was a better target anyways. Nera told him to run, but he couldn't do it. She never ran, nor turned a blind eye to anyone in need. So why should he leave her to their mercy? Maybe if he had listened, they wouldn't have killed her.
Beaten and severely bloodied, the thugs left the two in the street. Perhaps they would have finished the job if they hadn't figured Vydar was on death's door. Once they were gone, the young drow crawled over to his adoptive mother. Seeing him do so, she smiled before taking her final breath.
Despite all odds, Vydar managed to nurse himself back to health. With the skills Nera taught him, he made due on the streets just fine. Despite his better judgement, he even took on his mentor's habit of breaking up streetfights, and such. Not because he cares, just because he can't stand bullies....at least that's what he tells himself.
Now at the age of 23, the young elf seeks to escape the street life and become something more.
As previously stated, I am currently in 6 games, though one pbp (which I am running, will be ending within the month, maybe sooner depending on the thread) and one other pbp has slowed to about one post per 3-4 weeks. The IRL game has also gone on a bit of a hiatus as the dm and me have both moved out of the area....sooo that one may end up going online at some point. That said, I'm really only in 3 active groups. I've been wanting to join a new rp heavy game for a while and I likely won't join another if chosen for this one.
I am in a bit of a slow spell, but I should be able to meet the once a day post request starting towards the end of this week.

That is three Fighter types so far. A cleric, rogue, or spell-caster type will have a higher chance for selection.
I've got a wizard that I've been itching to play, I'll get him linked up if you think he would work out better.
