Ruffian F, a burly half-orc with an eyepatch, fends off Bear-Dunkin's attacks while barking orders at the other Redbrands. "We're under attack! Everyone, take those bombs and complete the mission; bugbears, get off yer lazy butts and kill this bear before it eats me!" As Dunkin keeps the half-orc occupied, Chase lands a powerful blow with his warhammer.
The Redbrands jump into action. They take from the bar and nearby long table several glass bottles with rags stuffed inside. Ruffian C cries, "They got Karl!" as they look at Ruffian K's body pierced with an arrow and a crossbow bolt. They see Sildar and no one else and shouts, "You'll pay for this; you'll all pay!" They wind up to throw one of their molotov cocktails at Sildar, but Ruffian D stops them, saying, "Not inside the taphouse, Carla!" They both turn to go out the pantry door.
The bugbears grin as they take their javelins and charge at Dunkin and Chase. Their goblin "friend" screams and frantically tries to put out Garaele's holy flames while running around the taproom.
OOC:
Sorry about the confusion earlier. We should be back on track now. The dice are truly not with Dunkin.
I don't think Garaele can Hide the same turn she casts a spell, so I just had her move out of line of sight of the enemies instead.
Monsters:
Bugbear A (Bugbear) 24/24 HP: Attack (javelin) Bear-Dunkin --> 20 to hit for 11 piercing damage
Bugbear B (Bugbear) 24/24 HP: Attack (javelin) Chase --> 14 to hit (miss)
Bugbear C (Bugbear) 25/25 HP: Attack (javelin) Chase --> 12 to hit (miss)
All the red circles are incendiary devices. If ignited, they explode and deal 5 fire damage per round for two rounds to every creature and object within 5 ft., and ignites flammable objects in that range.
Hearing the shouting and chaos inside, Nyli makes a decision - better to lose the inn, than the whole village. She steps into view and casts druidcraft to set the firebomb closest to her alight. As a bonus she conjures mage hand and throws the firebomb, hoping it will set the others alight.
She then moves back outside.
Sister Garaele casts sacred flame at Ruffian C. Req Dex save 12 to avoid 2 damage. She then moves away from the building a few feet.
As Dunkin grapples with Ruffian ‘F’ the brigand’s sword cuts into his side just before a javelin seems to also bloom from his shoulder. Dunkin’s last thought as he collapses is that he hopes the ruffian suffocates beneath his bulk.
OOC:
Strength check to shove Ruffian ‘F’ away = 17+3 =20
Sildar charges straight at the enemy and leaps up onto the bar. "I shall save you, Dunkin!" he shouts, swinging his longsword at Bugbear C. He misses horribly and the bugbear hardly acknowledges Sildar's presence.
Monsters Round 2:
Ruffian C yelps as her firebomb spontaneously ignites. She flings it up in the air, yet as it sails towards the kitchen, it inexplicably (to her) changes course as an invisible Mage Hand guides it to the floor below Ruffian C, where is shatters and immediately ignites. All the redbrands in the area cry out and flee out the pantry door, rolling on the ground to put out the fires on their clothes. It turns out those red capes are highly flammable.
The Redbrands caught the north of the fire instead cross the taproom. The first picks up a nearby chair and heaves it through the front window, then steps through. The others follow, wary of the bugbear's javelins and Chase's warhammer. All three carry firebombs.
As Bear-Dunkin shrinks back into regular Dunkin, his claws finally land a solid blow on Ruffian F, sending the half-orc tumbling back over the bar and straight into the fire rapidly expanding from the pantry. Even as he burns, he continues to order the other Redbrands around. "The basement! The boss is in the basement! Get 'em out of there!" he yells. In response, Ruffian G stamps out the flames by the hatch behind the bar that very likely leads to the basement.
The bugbears taunt Chase in Common as his warhammer move just a little too slowly, "Ha-ha, Cragmaw bugbears are the strongest! Stronger than half-bear; stronger than dwarf!"
OOC:
Anyone who starts their turn in the burning area takes 5 Fire damage. Characters may use their Action to stamp out the flames in a 5 ft. area.
@HunterOrien or @H20_Keeper, one of you please take Sildar's turn in the next round.
Monsters:
Bugbear A (Bugbear) 24/24 HP: Attack (javelin) Chase --> 23 to hit for 5 piercing damage
Bugbear B (Bugbear) 24/24 HP: Attack (javelin) Chase --> 11 to hit (miss)
Bugbear C (Bugbear) 25/25 HP: Attack (javelin) Sildar --> 21 to hit for 10 piercing damage
???
Droop (Goblin) 6/10 HP: Hide in corner (Stealth 25)
All the red circles are incendiary devices. If ignited, they explode and deal 5 fire damage per round for two rounds to every creature and object within 5 ft., and ignites flammable objects in that range.
The red square represents the fire. The Sleeping Giant, like most buildings in Phandalin, is made of wood. The fire will spread until it is put out or it runs out of fuel.
The half-orc Ruffian F is pierced with Nyli's crossbow bolt. He gasps for breath and slumps to the floor. He shakily reaches for a pouch on his belt and pulls out two small, glass bottles, potions of healing, but the ruffian's strength fails him and they slip out of his hand. The last thing Ruffian F sees is Nyli going out the door after Sister Garaele. The flames spread, overtaking the ruffian and the rest of the bar area.
The remaining Redbrand (Ruffian G) cries out in pain as they heave open the burning hatch to the basement. They call out from within the flames to the three bugbears, "You three, get over here! If the boss dies, your king doesn't get paid!" The three bugbears try to knock Chase down before they move over to the bar. The first one there enters the burning area and reaches its hand down towards the basement.
OOC:
The Redbrand Ruffians fleeing with the firebombs are worried more about competing their evil mission than fighting. Even though they are not fighting, we will remain in initiative for now. To chase the ruffians down, we will use the following rules:
The Redbrands have a short lead at the moment. Anyone who chooses to pursue them must make a Wisdom (Perception) check (made with advantage if you are proficient in Survival) against their stealth scores listed below. This check represents not losing sight of them as you navigate the streets of Phandalin.
If your Perception roll is higher than any of the Redbrands' Stealth rolls, you can choose one Redbrand to catch. That one will surrender; the others will continue to flee.
Bringing any individual Redbrand below 5 HP will also cause them to surrender.
You can make this check once per round, and you have 3 rounds to make 6 successful checks (one for each fleeing Redbrand). After that time, any remaining ruffians will start burning buildings, starting with targets close to the Sleeping Giant.
Alternatively, you can also go straight to any one building you want to save. If it's one of the Redbrands' targets, you are guaranteed to stop them from burning it. You can't pursue any Redbrands if you do this. Potential targets are the places named on this map:
Sildar got a good view of the healing potions. To get to them he would have to take 5 damage from the fire. The potions themselves will be destroyed after one round. Ruffian F also had a Longsword, +1, but that is not immediately obvious.
Monsters:
Bugbear A (Bugbear) 24/24 HP: Attack (Shove) Chase --> DC 16 Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check or else be knocked prone
Bugbear B (Bugbear) 17/24 HP: Attack (Shove) Chase --> DC 6 Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check or else be knocked prone*
*If Chase is already prone, then on an unsuccessful check he will be knocked 5 ft. south
The red square represents the fire. The Sleeping Giant, like most buildings in Phandalin, is made of wood. The fire will spread until it is put out or it runs out of fuel. Anyone who enters the burning area or starts their turn there takes 5 Fire damage.
The Redbrand Ruffians' tokens represent the general direction they are headed; they are actually 30 ft. farther away. You can try to catch them using the rules above, or assume they are 60 ft. away from you for this round.
Nyli decides that Dunkin, Chase & sildar are better equipped for fighting bugbears than her. She takes off after the arsonists, shouting to Sister Garaele "Follow me, we need to try and save as much of the town as possible!"
She launches an arrow at the closest redbrand E. The arrow catches them in the leg and they fall in a heap, screaming. She carries on, ignoring the writhing redbrand, trying to keep the others in her sight.
Sister Garaele follows casting sacred flame at redbrand C.
Nyli - Perception 10. Shortbow - to hit 14 Damage 4. Bonus action - dash. RuffianE - 3/19
Sister Garaele - Perception 11. Sacred flame damage 8 if save fails. Ruffian C - 3/16
Nyli and Sister Garaele bring down one ruffian each. Ruffian D abandons their two companions and continues heading west at a full sprint. Half a block away, three more red-cloaked thugs split up and head for their pre-planned destinations.
Inside the taphouse, Chase stops Dunkin from bleeding out while Sildar does his best to keep the bugbears busy. The bugbears, meanwhile, help several hooded figures climb out of the burning basement. First, Ruffian G climbs up. Next, a short, dark-bearded human male in red robes and a princely mantle of ermine, carrying a tome and a beautiful glass staff, as well as a Horn of Silent Alarm. When he comes into view, Sildar cries, "Iarno, you're alive! How could you join these Redbrands?"
The man replies, "Call me Glasstaff. And I did not join the Redbrand Gang; I made them what they are. Surrender now, Sildar, and call off these 'heroes' of yours." Glasstaff glances at Chase and Dunkin. "We can talk this out, outside." As he says this, he speaks an incantation and points his staff at Sildar. Sildar's enraged expression twitches as he fights against the enchantment. Even as he does, Sildar manages to throw the two healing potions to Chase.
All of a sudden, the orange and red flames that are consuming the taproom flicker and change into a deep purple. The room dims as a female dark elf climbs out of the basement and joins Glasstaff. She points at Chase and Dunkin and whispers something to Glasstaff; Glasstaff glares at her in turn.
Although the dark elf appears to be concentrating on a spell that is suppressing the fire, it continues to burn. Smoke begins to fill the taproom. Your enemies begin to make their way toward the broken window to the west, led by Droop the Goblin, who popped out wherever it was hiding. The ruffians and bugbears form a line to protect their employers.
OOC:
Four would-be arsonists remain at large; they are now somewhere in the second circle from the center in the map below:

I think I might have made a ruling previously about administering potions. I will say now that if Chase or Sildar wants to use a bonus action to revive Dunkin with one of the potions of healing that would be allowed. If that happens, Dunkin still can take a turn this round.
Sildar must make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw against Glasstaff's Charm Person. He has advantage on the roll because the caster is an enemy.
Map:

Dunkin comes to his senses with Chase standing over him. Smoke fills his eyes and a general commotion seems all about. “Chase, my friend, thank you!” He exclaims.
As Dunkin rolls to his feet a knot of bugbears, a wizard, and a drow demands his action. “Let’s try this,” he thinks, “maybe halflings just aren’t meant to be bear warriors.”
Cast Ice Knife in the center of the group (Bugbear B). To hit = 6 (miss). DEX save needed by anyone within 5’ or take 3d6 cold damage when shard explodes.
As the remaining Redbrands, Cragmaws, and dark elf evacuate the burning building, Dunkin returns from near death, thanks to Chase's medical attention and a magic potion. He stands sends a burst of ice across the room. Bugbear B dodges it with ease, but explodes just as it reaches the center of the group. Shards of ice fly in all directions. The bugbears dodge it with ease.
Glasstaff and one of the ruffians get the worst of the cold and are actually frozen with shock. The drow woman looks at Glasstaff with utter disgust and rage. She kicks him to the ground and deliberately steps on his body as she runs out of the taphouse with the bugbears. On her way out, she hisses at Chase and Dunkin and Sildar in a heavily-accented Common, "You keep your worthless town, male iblithin! If you see us again, you will die painful death."
Visual reference for Black Spider B
The remaining ruffian tries to drag his stunned boss and comrade out of the burning building as the flames lose their purple hue and begin to spread again. Then, a monstrous screech echoes from the basement, followed by a new figure: a long, wiggling, snake-like elemental wreathed in flame. Its screech is audible above the roaring fire and cracking wood of the taphouse. This Fire Snake seems to be absorbing the heat of the fire, but does not yet make any hostile moves.
Meanwhile, Nyli and Sister Garaele chase after Ruffian I. Even as Nyli's arrow grazes his side, he manages to dodge Sister Garaele's sacred flames. Looking back momentarily, he cries, "Stay away from me, you weird gnome! It wasn't supposed to be like this!"
OOC:
Anyone who speaks Undercommon would know "iblith" is a racial slur for humans or non-drow meaning filth or excrement. Anyone who doesn't speak Undercommon can pretty much guess what it means from the Black Spider's tone.

It will spread to the red region in the next round.

Dunkin quickly bolts the second healing potion Chase had given him. “In for a penny, in for a pound,” he thinks as the fire snake rises. He casts Ice Knife at the beast, then turns and runs from the building. “Sildar, Chase! Let’s get out of here!”

Monsters Round 5:

Four would-be arsonists remain at large; they are now somewhere in the 3rd circle from the center in the map below:
The Redbrand Ruffians fleeing with the firebombs are worried more about competing their evil mission than fighting. Even though they are not fighting, we will remain in initiative for now. To chase the ruffians down, we will use the following rules:

Map:
The red square represents the fire. The Sleeping Giant, like most buildings in Phandalin, is made of wood. The fire will spread until it is put out or it runs out of fuel. Anyone who enters the burning area or starts their turn there takes 5 Fire damage. The fire is currently purple because of dark elf magic, which also prevents it from spreading. It will spread to the red region in the next round.
The Redbrand Ruffians' tokens represent the general direction they are headed; they are actually 90 ft. farther away. You can try to catch them using the rules above, or assume they are 60 ft. away from you for this round.
Dunkin quickly bolts the second healing potion Chase had given him. “In for a penny, in for a pound,” he thinks as the fire snake rises. He casts Ice Knife at the beast, then turns and runs from the building. “Sildar, Chase! Let’s get out of here!”
OOC:
Ice Knife = 22 (hit); 6 damage then shard explodes (take 2d6 on failed DEX save
