Hello, thank you for taking the time to read this.
I am looking to start a “grim fantasy/horror” campaign for 4-5 PCs. If you’ve played Grim Hollow, that is the style/mood/theme for this game, essentially the world has been recently broken and will now begin slowly fading away into oblivion. The inhabitants of the world aren’t aware of this fact just yet. This will be a homebrew world that will borrow from both Etharis (Grim Hollow’s setting) and Ravenloft.
Expect twists and turns as you navigate your way through this world that is slowly drifting into the darkness of eternity.
Running for your life will be as safe as standing your ground to fight.
Your PCs will start at level three. Please roll ability scores as 4d6 and drop the lowest.
To start: I would like a basic overview of the character you'd like to play -- Name/Class (options?)/Race/Background/Personality Traits/Quirks. We're going to add somethings and try to inter-connect the characters before the game starts so the character doesn't have to be 100% completed. There will be other options added during character creation that reflect the setting/mood. These will be done based on your play style/goals.
Yes, I am good with the 2024 options.
All 5e DnD sources are welcomed.
Third Party sources are not going to be used.
Homebrew classes/race are not going to be used. However, if there is an item that is homebrew, I am open to using it but need to take a look at it ahead of time (case by case basis)
POSTING EXPECTATIONS:
- I plan on posting around 3 times a week to pust the game a bit forward each time. Please let me know if you cannot commit to this rate of posting. OR if you're okay with me "botting" your PC if need be.
- I will post in the evenings. I live in the EST timezone (East Coast USA)
- I will warn ahead of potiental combat and if you would like to state your PCs strategy overview ahead of time in order to save time that is fine.
-
This will be a learning experience for myself, as I am not familiar with PBP or these forums but I have been DMing for nearly 30 years and have stories to tell. I expect to edit this post dozens of times adding to things as they come up. So, please be patient with me
Hi, I am not familiar with the Grim Hollow setting but this sounds interesting. What information would you like from people applying? Also are you good with the 2024 character options?

Good question.

Class (options?): Ranger/Monk I don't know what options yet. New to 2024 rules.
Race: Human
Background: Wayfarer
Personality Traits: Paranoid, feel like this works for this setting.
Quirks: need to think about this but for now I will say he has a broken compass that he always holds when trave
ling.
Question: Do you have an idea about what you expect the RPing/Combat ratio to be? It sounds like taking things out will almost never be the right option but wanted to confirm.

I'd say the ratio would be 70/30 -- however, if you all want more fighting I'm fine with that.
Super interested! I am very active (EST) and I love horror. The tone and atmosphere of the Ravenloft setting, specifically Curse of Strahd, is my favorite. Haven't gotten to play the Grim Hollow setting before but like what I've read of it (the player pack). 70/30 rp to combat ratio sounds perfect for me. I also have content sharing on here and will be happy to do so for the campaign if chosen.

Name: Aldrin Whitetree
Class (options?): Thief Rogue
Race: Wood Elf
Background: Charlatan
Personality Traits: Impulsive and adventurous. (Over)Confident in her skills. High expectations of herself and others. Not a big fan of nature and doesn't trust druids. No faith in any gods.
Quirks: Steals and/or dances at times without realizing it. Prefers to sleep rather than trance. Ambidextrous.
I probably don't have time for this, but I'm intrigued.

Name: Lucien Ravencroft Race: Human Class: Warlock Background: Noble, turned Occult investigator Traits: Calm and calculating, polite and charming, quick-witted and diplomatic. Quirks: Keeps meticulously clean and is addicted to good strong spirits.
This sounds amazing. I've been hankering after something in the Ravenloft vein and I'm definitely intrigued.
Name: Tessera D'Argansioux
Gender: Female
Species: Changeling
Class: Sorcerer
Background: Charlatan
Personality: Hedonistic, sunny disposition, charming. Naively tries to make friends with just about anyone, believes in the goodness (or at least the potential goodness) of any sentient creature. Likely to suffer a rude awakening in such a world, and will need to adjust to new realities.
Quirks: Unless she's deliberately attempting to deceive someone, her moods are reflected in her appearance as a result of her shapeshifting abilities. Feeling melancholy? Her face literally turns blue and her ears begin to droop like they're melting? Excited and ready to get to a task? A coruscating rainbow will flicker across her face. And so on.
Not so much a Sage as a cultist. His cult, Brotherhood of the Creed of Apophis, is your basic evil group of worshippers of a bastard dragon fire divinity type... But they keep it all hush hush and Brother Erendo is basically a sleeper agent.
Has a tome chained to his left hand that is in the BotCoA cypher. It is part religious text, part magical secrets, part instruction manual on how to go about daily life like a true and devout BotCoA member.
Very demur, very laid back. He presents himself as a basic cleric of a generalized non-denominational one sized fits all religion. He is very quiet and calm, not likely to be rushing up into melee. Probably reluctant to cast any attack spells unless he thinks it safe enough. He may, in fact, be a bit of a coward and liability. We'll see... But he can heal. What more do you really need from a cleric?
Never seen out of his robes or with his hood down. He is very Jawa that way. But more understandable.
He's basically sent out by the cult to grow in power and find new sources of strength to bring back to the cult. A side mission is to weaken other religions and spellcasters as they are seen as the main threat to Apophis in the long run.
Mainly in playing him I intend him to be a bit of a tag along that nobody notices much. A support player. When opportunity present to pull some shady stuff against spellcasters or religions (not part of the party) he'll do it if he thinks he can get away with it. I dunno, it's not a fully fleshed out concept yet but I like the general jist of it...

Pretty solid rolls there.

What sources are allowed?
Is homebrew allowed?
Other than the standard class/background equipment will PCs start with additional equipment?

(1) All D&D 5e (or 2024 rules) are allowed for sources.
(2) I'll say no for now, unless there's something REALLY specific you want from homebrew and it's not broken.
(3) Yes there will be additional equipment for the PCs. But that is part of the after applying stage.
