Long forgotten, a ruined siege castle has stood in the Greypeak Mountains for centuries, sealed by powerful magic after the death of its last master. Locals called it just another "dead ruin," but a recent earthquake changed everything. The tremors shattered part of the fortress, opening its interior for the first time in hundreds of years.
Now, a band of adventurers arrives in the area. Some are here for glory, others for gold, and some perhaps to stop whatever lurks within. But one thing is certain—the Fallen Fortress holds secrets long buried beneath stone and time.

Thorek is a stout, battle-worn dwarf with a thick, braided iron-grey beard, streaked with the dust of the road. His armor bears the sigil of his old battalion—a crossed hammer and pick over a crumbling wall. His deep-set eyes, the color of old stone, gleam with the keen awareness of a man who's seen far too many sieges.
Personality
A gruff but disciplined veteran, Thorek speaks little but observes much. He values structure and honor, though he's learned that war and battle rarely allow for either. He dislikes reckless adventurers but respects those who earn their keep. He also holds grudges longer than most lifespans.
Backstory
Thorek Ironthane once served as a siege engineer for the Silver Wardens, a dwarf-led mercenary company specializing in fortifications, city defense, and—when the coin was right—cracking open enemy castles. He spent years breaching and defending strongholds, mastering the art of war machines and siege tactics.
Two decades ago, he fought in the Siege of Sundabar, where his company was betrayed, their forces shattered in an ambush. His captain fell, and Thorek barely escaped, forever haunted by the echoes of collapsing stone and the screams of fallen allies. He retired soon after, retreating to a quiet life of smithing in Llorkh, drinking away old memories.
Why He's Venturing to the Fallen Fortress
The earthquake that revealed the ruined castle stirred something in him—old instincts, old memories. A fortress sealed by magic for centuries? That’s no ordinary ruin. Thorek suspects something unnatural or dangerous lies within, something perhaps tied to forgotten wars. And if there’s one thing he knows, it’s how fortresses fall—and what’s left behind when they do.
Maybe it’s curiosity. Maybe it’s duty. Or maybe he just wants one last battle before time turns him to dust.

Backstory: Elena was the first born princess of a High Elf King. Growing up, the king and the queen tried to impart on her skills fitting of the first princess of their royal family. However, Elena did not take to these lessons at all. She was bad at history, magic and study and would instead prefer to explore outside, play in the mud, watch and later join the royal guards in their weapon and armor training. She would often sneak out of the castle to spend time in the town and explore the woods nearby. She made a close friend as well, a half-orc urchin girl from town. The two would often go on adventures and get into mischief together. Elena herself was only a few years older than the orc girl. However orcs and elves don't have the same lifespan. Before Kathleen had even reached 100 years old, she watched her best friend go through her life, going from a child to an adult to an old woman and eventually passing away due to old age. This made Elena feel just how short life is in the grand scheme of things and renewed her drive to explore. Growing increasingly frustrated with Elena's vigor and "recklessness", her parents sent her to attend a grand ball in a different kingdom, accompanied by her uncle. They were hoping that getting her more friends in royal families and increasing their strictness on her would "Cure" her of her undesirable traits. On the way though, Elena's caravan was attacked by some unusually brutal and well-armed bandits. The princess's guards were slain and she herself took a fatal hit to the neck and bled out, face down on the mud. She was thought dead but by sheer luck, she managed to survive and wake up hours later. She found shelter and rested. When she recovered from her wounds, the princess wandered off, never to be heard from again. She never felt at home in her castle. She was truly free and happy when she was out traveling across the lands, sleeping under the night sky and visiting towns and taverns. She always wanted to explore the world and ever since her friend died she felt that 900 years was nowhere near enough time to do everything she wanted. She took a new name both to hide her identity and to commemorate her new life as an adventurer. She took the name "Kathleen Burnes" based on her favorite fictional character, a human tomb raider who would get into all sorts of adventures in her book series.
Reason for exploring the Fortress: Curiosity and desire to explore.
Description: Kathleen is 6ft 2 inches tall. She has long blond hair that she keeps tied in a long ponytail. Her skin has been tanned from spending a lot of time outdoors. Her eyes are blue. She is a 110 year old High Elf. She wears long full length pants, white leather greaves and boots. She also wears a sleeveless white leather armor and leather bracers. Despite her sun baked skin and her rough athletic build, her face bares features indicating nobility and a high birth. Her attitude though, lacks that sense of nobility. She is generally friendly and excitable. She has a drive to experience as much of the world and of life as she can; something that can be seen as desperation and recklessness by elf standards but in reality is more like the drive to fulfill their dreams that is more common in short-lived races like Humans and Half-Orcs.
Daxe likes to steal things. He is also a bit of a loose cannon when he gets into fights. He likes to call himself a "Count" as it keeps people on edge. Is he a noble, a vampire, why a Count? He has come to the Greypeak Mountains in search of gold and treasure, as well as to escape his past. He has no problems with his past, he is really just trying to escape those looking for him, or more acurately, the stuff he stole from them.
Character Sheet:https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/143220705/qg5z8C Name: Atreus Day Species: Half-elf Class: Bard Backstory: Atreus was born a performer. He played lead roles as an actor, depicting a villain or hero with great impact, he was a talented musician who could enchant a crowd with his lute, he was a travelling storyteller who sang of great tales, he was a flexible acrobatic who could dazzle the audience with his movements, and he was even a renowned gladiator who fought in many arenas. Reason: The Greypeak mountains just so happen to be one of the destinations of his journey across Faerun. Portrait: Atreus
Personality: Beneath her adventurous exterior lies a mind constantly buzzing with questions and a deep-seated longing for answers. Kitsune's awkwardness in social situations stems not from malice, but from a mind preoccupied with unraveling mysteries and chasing the whispers of forgotten lore. She is more at home dissecting a rare fungus or deciphering a cryptic inscription than engaging in polite conversation. Her determination and insatiable curiosity drive her forward, making her an unpredictable ally and a formidable explorer, always ready to chase the next tantalizing lead, even if it means straying from the beaten path.
Description: Kitsune is a young woman with a striking, almost ethereal appearance. Her most prominent feature is her raven-black hair, which frames her face with a blend of wildness and deliberate style, contrasting sharply with her alabaster skin. Her eyes, a pale, almost silvery grey, hold a depth of intelligence and a hint of the untamed, reflecting her restless curiosity and unwavering focus. Her expression is often intense, a mirror to the constant churning of thoughts and questions within her mind. Her clothing, practical and layered in earthy tones, speaks to her life as a ranger, a life spent traversing wild and often unpredictable landscapes. She carries a bow with practiced ease, a testament to her honed skills and her readiness to face the challenges that lie ahead.
Backstory: Kitsune wasn't raised in a typical, sheltered village or bustling city. Her parents, unconventional scholars and explorers, were obsessed with the potential of the unknown, the liminal spaces between realities. They believed that the constant flux of emotions and echoes of other worlds held secrets to unlocking true, limitless understanding. This unorthodox upbringing instilled in Kitsune her chaotic ideal of "No Limits." She wasn't taught the usual human social graces, but rather a restless curiosity and an almost manic pursuit of knowledge, especially the kind whispered on the edges of reality. This explains her awkwardness; social niceties were secondary to the thrill of discovery. She's more comfortable dissecting a rare fungus than making small talk. Her parents, unfortunately, were less adept at navigating social situations than Kitsune, though for different reasons. Their eccentric research and unusual beliefs made them outsiders in most communities. One day, they ventured into a particularly dangerous and uncharted region, seeking a rumored "nexus of infinite possibilities"—a place where the boundaries between worlds were thin. They never returned. This event solidified Kitsune's driving question: what happened to her parents? Were they lost to some terrible natural disaster? Did they transcend to some higher plane of existence through their research? Or, as she secretly hopes, did they find what they were looking for and simply leave her behind, believing she would follow in their footsteps? This unanswered question fuels her wanderlust and her ranger training. She honed her skills not just for survival, but to explore the forgotten corners of the world, seeking clues and whispers of information that might lead her to the truth. She views every encounter, every creature, every ancient ruin as a potential piece of the puzzle. This relentless pursuit of knowledge, however, is her flaw. A rumor of a forgotten library, a cryptic inscription on a crumbling wall, or even a strange glint in a traveler's eye can completely derail her, causing her to forget her immediate goals in favor of chasing the tantalizing promise of new information. It's a flaw that makes her unpredictable, sometimes unreliable, but also capable of stumbling upon unexpected discoveries.
