Your services are needed in the frontier town of Phandalin. Will you answer the call?
The frontier town of Phandalin is built on the ruins of a much older settlement. Hundreds of years ago, the old Phandalin was a thriving human town whose people were firmly allied with neighboring dwarves and gnomes. Then an orc horde swept through the area and laid waste to the settlement, and Phandalin was abandoned for centuries.
In the last three or four years, settlers from the cities of Neverwinter and Waterdeep have begun the hard work of reclaiming the ruins of Phandalin. The new settlement is home now to farmers, woodcutters, fur traders, and prospectors drawn by stories of gold and platinum in the foothills of the Sword Mountains. The arrival of a white dragon threatens to destroy all that they’ve worked to rebuild.

About me: This is my first time hosting a play-by-post campaign. I host two in-person campaigns weekly on Friday and Saturday nights so my posting on those days may be limited. I enjoy this game and respect the energy and time players dedicate to it. I plan to host to the conclusion and transition directly into the supplemental source content included in Storm Lord's Wrath, Sleeping Dragon's Wake, and Divine Contention. I vow never to end the campaign early and seek a group of dedicated players to have fun with. I look forward to seeing your character ideas.
Race: Variant Human (feat: Magic Initiate - Sorcerer)
Class: Sorcerer (Wild Magic)
Rolled Ability Scores: Str 10 Dex 16 Con 12 Int 16 Wis 16 Char 16
Background: Artisan/Merchant
Appearance: Kieran Vale is a tall, slender man with wavy chestnut hair. His bright blue eyes gleam with curiosity and determination. He dresses in an extravagant tunic covered in magic symbols, always a reminder of the unpredictability of wild magic.
Alignment: Lawful Good
Personality Traits (2):
Meticulous and Calculating: Kieran is constantly thinking several steps ahead, weighing risks and rewards in both business and magic. He double-checks spells and meticulously tracks his shop inventory.
Warm and Charismatic: Despite his cautious nature, he has a natural charm that makes people trust him. He believes diplomacy and understanding are the best tools for resolving conflict.
Ideal: Structure Brings Stability. Kieran believes that order, fairness, and well-crafted agreements are the foundation of a prosperous society. Even unpredictable magic can be harnessed with enough diligence.
Bond: Kieran carries a small, intricately carved wooden charm — a gift from his mother, who believed it would ward off misfortune. Though he knows its power is purely symbolic, he clings to it as a reminder of her faith in him and the belief that even the most chaotic magic can be tempered with resolve.
Flaw: Kieran fears losing control of his wild magic. Every miscast spell serves as a grim reminder of the chaos that dwells within him. This fear sometimes makes him hesitate in critical moments and will sometimes cause him to lose control. (Thinking this will manifest by making the wild surge trigger go from a 1 to 1-2 or 1-3)
Backstory: Born into a family of skilled merchants, Kieran was taught the value of negotiation, honesty, and craftsmanship. When his wild magic first manifested during his teenage years, it caused widespread damage to his family’s shop. Though no one was harmed, the experience left him deeply shaken. Determined to master his abilities, Kieran sought guidance from mages and scholars, studying tirelessly to minimize the unpredictable surges of power. Now, he uses his magic to enhance his trade, crafting minor enchanted items and advising other merchants on magical goods. However, whispers of strange surges of magic still follow him.

Ideal: Life is like the seasons, in constant change, and we must change with it.
Bond: My family, clan, or tribe is the most important thing in my life.
Flaw: I struggle to understand how people interact, the unspoken rules of society baffle me.
Backstory
Tola’s earliest memories are of traveling with a wolf pack she considered her family and her pack. There was no shared language between them but she still learned the ways of the wild from them by instinct and example. As Tola grew and the pack traveled around the wilds she desired the ability to communicate with her pack on a deeper level asking the moon, whom the pack cried to, to be able to talk with them. Under the moon that night Tola became a cleric of the moon and was gifted a blessing (Fey Touched Feat) which allowed her to cast a spell and speak with her pack. A new season of life began as the pack was able to grow closer to her and teach her in better detail. As she grew more and more of the older wolves passed. Before the last of the wolves that were in the pack when Tola was found she was told that the pack found her wandering in the woods covered in human blood. They knew it to be human from the scent and the taste when they cleaned her, with instructions from the elder of where she was found she set off from the pack to learn what happened to her human family. Traveling among people was a strange experience, they all stared her down in the eyes and found it odd that she was constantly scanning her surroundings and not staring into other’s eyes. When she saw people in need and able to be helped by her abilities as a cleric she gave aid. Occasionally those she helped sheltered her on her travels or gave her coin. The shiny bits she learned were for getting resources from other people. Her travels eventually brought her to a land in ruin, and near the location she was found by the wolves she came across the remains of a long overgrown farm. Through the smashed door she found a home tossed and destroyed, on the wall hung an aged portrait of a family with a little girl whose hair was orange as her own. The older boy and parents had similar features to the ones she saw in her reflection on the broken mirror on the floor. While searching the house she found a loose floorboard covering a concealed storage spot not far from a large bloodstain on the floor. In the storage she found armor, a shield and a shortsword. The armor fit her well when she tried it on, so she kept it. There was little of value left in the home but she took a few things including the family portrait before heading out to find her pack. When she tracked them down she found that she had lost another family, the entire pack had been wiped out and their bodies left where they were slain. She knew that the pack would hunt and kill but they only killed what they needed to eat, whatever did this just left them behind. She howled in her loss and rushed into the nearby town seeking answers to what happened to her pack. The townsfolk had stories of a group of ruffians that had traveled through the area bragging about taking out the wolves. The Townsfolk had known about the pack but also knew their presence kept other beasts away so had left them unbothered. When they learned Tola’s connection to the pack they gave her a place to stay while she mourned and taught her their tradition of burying the dead. When her time of mourning passed Tola set out to learn who killed her pack, what happened to her family, and with healing form a new pack. Helping wherever she’s needed.

Background: Hermit
Appearance: It is easy enough to identify Bàn Diabhal for a Tiefling given his ashy-white skin, blue hair, stubby horns and tail and this has at least partially led to Bàn's hermit-like ways and self isolation from most of society. It was his desire for solitude which brought him to Phandalin and inspired him to take up farming... Despite his obvious lack of skill at the endeavor.
Alignment: Neutral Good
Personality Traits (2): I’m oblivious to etiquette and social expectations. I often get lost in my own thoughts and contemplation, becoming oblivious to my surroundings.
Ideal: Greater Good. My gifts are meant to be shared with all, not used for my own benefit. (Good)
Bond: I’m still seeking the tranquility I pursued in my seclusion, and it still eludes me.
Flaw: I like keeping secrets and won’t share them with anyone.
Backstory It's a common enough story - Boy is born differently and finds growing up on the streets of Waterdeep difficult so boy wanders off to help rebuild Phandalin and hopefully find peace and acceptance through helpfulness and large doses of isolation. Mostly, Bàn just wanted to be left alone. So he took to the "frontier" and took up apple farming. He's not very good at it. Either he just doesn't have a green thumb or he just doesn't really care that much about apples, but his take is always disappointing. Still, he manages. Barely. But the arrival of a white dragon will surely not be good for his farms, his markets or his general tranquility... Reluctantly he picks up his old short sword and decides to see if he can help put an end to it.
Appearance: Tan skinned with dark hair bleached by the sun. He is nondescript and unassuming.Ward lacks the flare one would expect of one seasoned in the arcane arts. His body is lithe from a life spent rigging sails. Though he is quiet and not easily angered, more comfortable with a book than a sword, he carries himself as one who's capable in a scrap if it comes to that.
Alignment: Lawful Good
Personality Traits (2): I stretch the truth for the sake of a good story. I work hard so that I can play hard when the work is done.
Ideal: Fairness. We all do the work, so we all share in the rewards.
Bond: My first love, met aboard the ship where I served for so long. He taught me how to read and hunger for knowledge but he was lost to the sea.
Flaw: Once someone questions my courage, I never back down no matter how danger
Backstory: Ward is a humble fellow from humble origins. Spent his youth as a dock rat. The view of the waves gave him peace from his turbulant home life and the prospect of one day setting sail away from his troubles was a balm. One day he got his wish, finding fair work aboard a freight ship where he made a solid living and learned the ways of the sea.... But he never found true joy until he found work aboard a salvage vessel. He thrilled at the prospect of finding lost treasure and piecing together the stories of the sunken vessels. His quiet joy, hard work and keen curiosity caught the attention of another deck hand. A young noble who'd taken to a life of adventuring. The young noble taught Ward how to read, shared his knowledge of history and arcane lore... Eventually the two began a short lived romance before the noble was lost in a battle with sahuagin raiders. Ward never expected to find happiness again until he found... the book. It was discovered on a derelict vessel stowed in a strong lockbox in a well-appointed guest quarters. As his crewmates claimed salvage rights on the gems and pearls, Ward contented himself in the strange tome.... A magical primer. At first it was a lark. Others scoffed at the idea of this simple working man commanding the weave. But little by little he managed to train himself. He used his earnings to by more books whenever they came to shore. Over time, he's built a working knoweldge of magic and now has a mind to set off overland to see what the world has to offer... and test his ability to be an actual magic user.
Personality Traits: Yuno is not ashamed of who she is and what she does. She only hides her true self if it would threaten her safety. She is a loud and whimsical, not caring of what other people think of her. She does however take on a fake persona for the sake of not drawing unwanted attention as it may lead to guards trying to arrest her due to being a serial killer and enjoyer of murder.
Ideal: Yuno believes in Freedom. She thinks that no one has any right to dictate how others should live their lives or what they should or should not do as a person.
Bond: Yuno's goal is to kill strong things so she can get stronger and get stronger to kill strong things. She seeks power but not for any grand plan; just for the sake of getting that power. Despite being remorselessly evil, Yuno does value loyalty. If someone befriends her, Yuno would be the type to go to the ends of the earth for that friend.
Flaw: Yuno gets very irritable and agitated when she hasn't killed something in quite some time.
Backstory:
Yuno was born in a small town to a blacksmith and his wife. She was the younger of two daughters. She grew up having a normal and unremarkable childhood; having loving parents and an older sister she was very close to. Things changed forever though when bandits one day kidnapped the sister when Yuno was only 13 years old. The guards searched for her sister for days but eventually they came back with a broken and mangled corpse. That incident awoke something within Yuno; a sick fascination and a passion for violence and death. Over the years she would be indulging in her fascination by killing small animals in the forest. Slowly, the animals she was killing got bigger and bigger until she moved on to the residents of the town.
Eventually though, she had a fight with a guard investigating the murders that came to her father's shop while her parents were away. In the brutal struggle that Yuno barely survived, she slayed the guard, feeling absolutely euphoric over the whole ordeal. That later that day she would end up killing her parents when they came back and burning down the house to make it look like a bandit attack as she walked off into the night, searching for greater challenges and more things to murder.
Yuno has now come to Phandalin after hearing of the dragon problem the town is having. What better battle could she find than to fight a dragon?
Personality Traits (2): I place no stock in wealthy or well-mannered folk. Money and manners won’t save you from a hungry owlbear. I have a lesson for every situation, drawn from observing nature.
Ideal: Change. Life is like the seasons, in constant change, and we must change with it. (Chaotic)
Bond: My family, clan, or tribe is the most important thing in my life, even when they are far from me.
Flaw: I am slow to trust members of other tribes and societies.
